The Beginnings of a Home

February 10th, 2007 @ 12:54 am by Mrs. Plumeria

Like a few of the other Bees, Mr. Plumeria and I do not currently live together — so starting out together as a married couple is REALLY starting out together for us. In terms of furnishing our home, I have a lot of decorator odds and ends and kitchen items from the college days, not to mention plenty of paintings and artwork (also from the college days, as an Art and Design major), but not much to speak of when it comes to furniture.

We had earlier resigned ourselves to making do with my college futon as our sofa and getting cheap IKEA and/or used furniture for everything else. Somehow, though, things furniture-wise have been falling into place unexpectedly. Just last week, we went to see some of my wonderful relatives, who offered us their sofa and loveseat set, as they are buying some new ones to fit the decor in their home better. The set is only a few years old, practically new in appearance, and as modern as I could wish for!

And now, just a week later, this, as an insanely generous wedding present from my grandparents: the Carolina 6-piece queen bedroom set from Costco, now on sale at Costco.com! We’ve been joint Costco members for a while, and I have to say that shopping at the large warehouse store has helped us to save money, but this well-made furniture set is probably one of the nicest things we’ve gotten from there.

For those of you in the same position, getting your first place together — what sources or stores are you relying on for furniture?

we bought our 4 piece sectional (Axis) from Crate and Barrel and also registered for a lot of furniture at CB. i know no one will buy it for us, but after the wedding you get 10% off whatever is on your list!

That’s a great bedroom set! We’ve had similar luck; the FI’s mom moved to Houston and left us her washer, dryer, refigerator, and coffee table. It’s a really pretty table too. And then, my sister’s father-in-law got a new TV and gave us his old one. A 60″ SONY GRAND WEGA. Wow. It’s f’n huge, pardon my language. We also got the leather couch back when we first moved in to the apartment.

So far, we’ve only gotten a bed together and it was from Ikea.

Target, Walmart, and yard sales. For sure. We’re POOR college students, so we’ll make due with whatever. We’re not picky. Just happy to be finally moving in together in April!

I applaud you for not living together. I see more couples who do live together before they get married and they are the ones always growing apart and need counseling. I’m not living with my Fi either. Our furniture is a combo of family donations, good sales/overstock.com and our own.

My FI and I are in the same boat as you! He has a futon, but so far we’ve gathered a recliner from neighbors who are moving and my old bedroom suite (which will be for guests!). Luckily my FI has a bed. We’re just praying the rest of the things show up! Heehee… best of luck to you!

We found a TON of great stuff at World Market! They have occasional 40% off coupons and while some of the coupons exclude furniture, others don’t! We watched the newspaper coupons very closely for about a month and bought most of our stuff at a deep discount. Their furniture comes IKEA-style (put it together yourself with an alan wrench kind of thing) but goes together very quickly and is very solid. We got our bed, nightstands, dresser, arm chair, dinner table/chairs, desks, and bookshelf all at 40% off. If you don’t have a store near you, you can try http://www.worldmarket.com. Hope that helps!

Isabelle–you must know a lot of unfortunate people. I, on the other hand, know a lot of people who have lived together before marriage and used it as a way to work out their relationship issues before the big day. I think it has more to do with your expectations of marriage than whether you lived together or not.

We’ve lived together for a bit more than a year, however, we’re both a bit older than your average engaged couple, and already have some decent furniture. But we plan on buying a house soon after getting married, and once we’ve seen what we will need, we want to invest in some good sold bedroom furniture, and I really want a specific vintage Heywood Wakefield dining set, if I can find it for a good price.

We’ve loved every cent spent at World Market. They have great furniture and the quality is all solid wood (no veneer) so we really like that aspect of it. They have great decorative kitchen items along with the regular plates, silver ware, cups, etc. We love how their stuff has a little bit of an Asian flair to it (really made in Indonesia or Thailand). They also have great gourmet foods too and if you’re a chocolate hog, they have a whole aisle for just that!

I also love antique shopping, great quality and price too. Stuff you wouldn’t be able to find at retail stores. TJ Maxx, Ross, and Stiens has great discount stuff too.

Good luck!

When my fiancÆ’© and I first moved in together, we were regulars at IKEA. A neighbor of ours said IKEA furntiure only lasts a year, but 3 years later, they’re still holding up!

When we first moved in, it was in the middle of a tournament Mr. Kiwi was coaching in.So during the break between two games, we raced back down to LA from the valley, bought our TV and two lawn chairs. Can you tell what’s important?

We got the couch from his mom, and the dressers and nightstands were all from Mr. Kiwi’s old roomate. Lightly used. We also bought out kitchen table and chairs from Ikea, and our coffee table from target. We got our bookshelf from his mom, too. We’ve also been offrered another larger/softer couch and TV from his brother. Sometimes we feel like pity cases and don’t want to take things, though.

We love Costco, rather Costco loves us. We just bought a house and moved to WA, so we literally needed everything. Well, Costco has everything. They have two home stores, in Kirkland and Tempe. We checked out Kirkland home store and it’s friggin awesome. Their furniture quality is excellent and a bargain to boot! They are opening another home store in Portland this summer and we are super excited. We have a lot of furniture but since the move to a rather large place, we need more stuff to fill it up. :p Most of our furniture is generously donated by my mother except for couple of pieces we purchased together and an antique desk that’s from FI’s family. We trashed/donated a lot of his furniture from college and bachelor days when we moved.
