He proposed after dating just two months - crazy, I know, but 2 years later, here we are, still crazy in love :-). We are having not one, but TWO weddings and TWO receptions in one weekend - American-style and Vietnamese-style - in Dallas, Texas, where I was born and raised!

Engagement Ao Dai

February 11th, 2007 @ 6:25 pm by Mrs. Plum

During my trip to Vietnam last month, I had tons of wedding-related things custom made for my wedding. Most of them are being shipped over by container in March, but my mom just got back yesterday (we went over together, but I came back early) and this is the first thing she brought back for me.

Of course, it will be steamed and cleaned before I wear it, as it got super wrinkled in the transport overseas…

My fiancee is vietnamese and we are going to be having the tea ceremony the morning before our western wedding. I was under the impression I had to wear a RED/GOLD Ao Dai, are other colors allowed?

Chrissie - You can wear whatever colors you want! There’s no set rule that says you must wear red and gold - that’s just traditional bc it means luck and whatnot - my actual wedding ao dai is going to be silver and white/ivory with a blue and silver dress under the outside dress. The green one is my “engagement ceremony” ao dai. :)

I can relate to this as well. =) My fiance is also Vietnamese and my ao cuoi colour choices have been more on the blue and green side- needless to say that this has been strongly discouraged from my in laws. =(.
Is it more customary from the younger generation to choose colours that they prefer?

oh..btw…I LOVE the detailing on your wedding dress.
Also, btw, my engagement ao dai was a mauve colour- made in Hue.
Thanks! Jaimie.

Hi Jaime - I think it’s all up to personal prefence :) but I have noticed that younger generations choose whatever color they like
