Passport Procrastination

February 12th, 2007 @ 4:17 pm by Mrs. Bee

Let my procrastination be a lesson to you.

Due to the new passport regulations that went into effect last month, the State Department has been swamped. Of course I completely forgot about that, and put off renewing my passport until now. Even with expedited service, they’re telling me that it’s going to take at least 3 weeks to get my passport. So now I have three options:

  • Wait until this Thursday and make an appointment to go into the New York Passport Agency. They don’t take appointments until 14 days before your day of departure. You can get your passport in 1-3 days.
  • Contact a private passport expediting service now. They charge anywhere between $50 - $180 on top of the $127 State fee, depending on how fast you need it. Some say they can get the passport in as little as 24 hours.
  • Wait to see if I can get an appointment on Thursday (no guarantee), and if I can’t, then contact a passport expediting service. They suggested I go to the less busy Connecticut office.

On another note, some countries require that your passport be valid for up to 6 months after you leave the country you’re visiting, so be sure to check each country’s regulations.

Have you ever gone into the passport agency or used an expediting service? How long did it take to get your passport?

The expedited service is very fast but they really take advantage of the fact that you’re in a rush and charge you a LOT! I would try to get an appointment at the New York passport agency first and if that really doesn’t work, then you should look into expedited service. I hope it works out! Good luck!

You can definitely do the appointment at the New York passport agency. My boyfriend had to do that when he procastinated before our trip to Paris. No problems at all. His passport was ready the next day.

I found out about the passport must be valid for 6 months after departure rule at the airport! I was visiting family in Hong Kong and then we were all going to the Phillippines to visit more family and they refused to let me on the plane in Hong Kong. I had to rush my butt to the US Embassy and beg for a new passport. Luckily I was able to get a new one within 24 hours and got on another flight the next day.

I once lost my passport in Costa Rica and had to go get another from the US Embassy. It was a pain, but I got it the same day. It was $90, though. Ugh.

I *JUST* renewed my passport and chose the expedited service after hearing horror stories about the regular service taking 3+ months.

Using FedEx both there and back, roundtrip was about a week.

Oh yes, we’re going through the same nightmare right now. I already got my passport in November, JUST before the rush, and have been reminding my FI every week since October to put his application in. We live in CAnada and have to be in Vegas for a friend’s wedding in April! He kept telling me to stop nagging him until I came home a couple weeks ago and said that I’d heard on the radio that people who were just then getting in their applications were out of luck if they needed them for March break. Then he FINALLY got his butt in gear, since our trip is only a week or two after March break. There’s a very good chance that he won’t have it in time and we’ll have to fly out of Seattle instead of Vancouver. For that reason, we can’t book our flights till the last minute and may have to pay sky-high prices for flights as a result. I sure hope not.

I renewed my passport two years ago at the NY passport office. I had an appointment on a Tuesday morning (or afternoon - I forget the full details) that took a few hours, then I had to go back the next day to pick it up. No big deal just a pain to squeeze it into the middle of the day. Wait and go to the agency in person.

My sis just did this in Philadelphia and my mom was able to pick up her passport for her the next day.

Another thing to think about is visas. We went to Brazil a few years ago and had to get a visa issued before the trip. That was much more of a pain than the emergency passport renewal.

Good luck!

From my own personal experience in CA I had mine expedited but it still felt like forever. It took approx. 4-5 weeks for it to come, just in time for my trip! then again this was before the big changes.

Just recently though, I helped my in-laws get theirs. They sent out their apps in early January, needless to say, they still have not arrived. Good thing their plans aren’t til the end of March.

For piece of mind pay the extra money you have to, the worst thing would be to say I couldn’t go because “I was too cheap to pay for expedited service and forgot to send it out earlier!”

This exact same thing happened to me except I had 3 days before my trip to get my passport renewed. You should have enough time to get an appointment and then, if you explain your situation, they’ll most likely turn it around to you by the next day. The turnaround time is “at the discretion of the agent” so it pays to be nice! Since I was so short on time, I ended up paying $150 for an expediting service who took my passport on a Wednesday afternoon and had it back to me by 2pm on Thursday.

About a month after September 11, I was in New York visiting a friend. I lost my drivers license on the subway and had no ID to board my return flight to California. So I contacted one of the private expediting services. They charged me about $100, but they got the job done. I showed up at their office and they gave me all of the needed forms and told me what kind of ID I needed (I had my roommate overnight my social security card and birth certificate). I still had to go to the post office to sign the application in front of the appropriate person. The next day, I picked up my passport at the expediter’s office. The whole process took three days. I’m not sure if it was worth the money, but I wouldn’t have known what to do on my own and they made it pretty easy. Good luck, Mrs. Bee!

the state’s automated appt hotline is a nightmare to use! they make you go through every single day, through morning appts, and afternoon appts, searching for free appts, and it’s unbearably slow. i gave up after being on the phone 30 min, and I was anywhere near my allowed appt date.

even tho the passport agency is down the street from me, i think i’ll just go with the expediting service. i called one and they said it was too soon - that they can only accept apps within 2 weeks of travel. phew! lesson learned - get your passport way ahead of time!

My bags were stolen at the airport this summer, so I had to get a new passport in a very short time, too. I went to the passport agency, but a warning: even if you make an appointment you have to wait outside for an hour, and then you have to wait HOURS (I’m talking 3-4) on line in a noisy crowded room to even speak to an agent, but that goes by very quickly, and you can return the next day and pick it up.

I’m so glad I ordered our in December. They got here at the end of January, not too late at all, and now they’re tucked away safe and sound. Whew! Good thing my mom is a nagger. ;)

I did the NYC passport office thing–conveniently, it’s right across the street from my office! I had lost my passport, and suddenly needed to go to Canada for business. But these days you need a passport to fly, even to Canada. It was no big deal–I think it was fairly expensive, but my job paid for it so I don’t remember. And now…I can’t find my passport again. I have a bad habit of putting things in “safe” places and then forgetting. I thought I knew where it was, then I moved, now I have to rip everything apart before my honeymoon. :(

Passport Services

How to Get a Passport?

1. Go to http://www.itseasyservices.com
2. Fill out the Application for Passport, Form DS-11. You can download this form online and bring it with you when you apply for your passport.
3. Get two passport photos taken. The identical photos must be 2 inches by 2 inches. The pictures must offer a full, frontal view of your face, from the top of your head through your shoulders. The photo must be taken with a plain white background. Many post offices, photo studios and mailbox locations take passport photos for a nominal fee.
4. Bring one of the following to the Passport Acceptance Facility to prove citizenship: previous U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate or a certificate of citizenship.
5. Bring proof of identity. A current driver’s license, government or military ID are the most common forms of identification. You can also bring a previous U.S. passport or naturalization certificate.
