About Beehive

Beehive

February 13th, 2007 @ 4:07 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • Lily is looking for a Cantonese/Mandarin/English speaking DJ/MC in the New York area.
  • Jess wants to know if there are any other brides out there paying for the entire wedding on their own? It feels terrible when you’re struggling to pay for the wedding of your dreams and you have to watch money every step of the way. Anyone else feel the same way?
  • Jenny GoLightly wants to know the best way to stretch bridal shoes. She’d been stepping out of her Special Occasions shoes by Saugus, so got smaller sizes, but now her toes are squished. Anyone have similar problems with this particular shoe?
  • T has decided on a champagne and gold color scheme for her December wedding in INdia. She’s like to highlight this with a bright/warm color like a grape purple or an olive green. Any suggestions?
  • JuneBride is getting married at a vineyard outside of Santa Barbara. She nees to find a hair/makeup person who is in SB or will travel from LA and not charge a huge travel fee. Any recommendations?

JESS: We are paying for the wedding ourselves. We started saving just about two years ago. We put all of our change in a jar and deposit it into a joint savings account. We try to put away money from each paycheck as well. We also cut down on luxury items - going out to eat, buying dvd’s, etc.

T: Olive green is a wonderful compliment to champagne and gold. Pair it with ivory and you’ve got a very fresh color scheme!! It just so happens to be the one I’m using for my wedding. :)

Jess- I am def feeling overwhelmed. It’s like all the money I saved for the past few years is disappearing in one day. I’m always torn b/w spending so much for one day and then thinking it only happens once. siggghhh. We just try our best to keep saving. But as much as we’ve saved, it looks like we’ll still have to borrow some money.

T- If my dress didn’t have some silver in it, I would have totally had some gold in my wedding. It’s a beautiful color and I think it can look good with just about anything- plum, dark blue, emerald green, light pink, etc!

If you’re paying for any portion of the wedding, you feel strapped. We’ve had a number of fights over how we should spend our money - and, believe it or not, the things our parents are paying for. My fiance freaked out when my mom reserved limos for $1600 because he felt that money could have been spent better elsewhere. My mom said since it was a gift, she should be able to spend the money as she sees fit. I could see both arguments, but boy did that ruin a weekend.

We are paying for the wedding on our own also. I’m actually wondering what kind of account everyone put their funds into. I was thinking a 5% yield savings will give us an additional $700 or so. Is there anything more aggressive?

Lily,
Try http://www.dynastyweddings.com and speak with Chris Chen. He DJ’s and has MC’s too. I highly recommend them. They are performing their services at my wedding and I can’t wait!

T - either of those colors will look great. also, a deep reddish-purple would work well…like a rich maroon or grape color.

JuneBride -
Try Kathleen Hagan at:
http://www.kathleenhagan.com/

She lives in Oxnard and gives up to one hour free travel (additional charge of $25/hour for anything over). I live in LA and drove out to her after she was highly recommended by my florist. She did a fantastic job at my trial (leave your email and I can send you photos) and is worth every penny.

We’re also paying for our own wedding, and one of the results is that just this week we moved the entire ceremony from South Florida (where I’m from), to Minneapolis (where we both live).

I now have six months to re-plan a wedding, God help me.

Jess: We are paying for our own money, and with loan money at that, so it’s not even going to be paid off for ~25 years. Since we are both students, and my parents refused to help pay for a wedding (they think weddings are extravagent and a waste of money, and that we should elope). They are probably right, but we really wanted our families to be there with us.

Laura: you can make your own envelope liner in about 5 seconds. Get a piece of thin cardboard and cut it to the width of the liner. stick it in the envelope. Trace the flap onto the liner. Take it out of the envelope and cut out the flap tracing. Then you’ll have an envelope shaped piece of cardboard, which you will need to offset to leave room for the flap’s glue. Cut 1/2 inch off the non-flap side (or just line it up under the glue and trace the bottom of the envelope). If that doesn’t make sense, leave me a message on my xanga and I’ll send you a picture.

I’m looking for a Jewish wedding, similar to the one featured here: http://chipperyplans.blogspot.com/2007/02/ring-thing.html
but with the characters cut through. I have found a bunch, but they’re all around $500– too much for a wedding ring at this point! Has anyone see them for less?

Which size(s) in particular do you need?

Di,
The reason Dynasty is more expensive is because they are not the typical Chinese Wedding DJ and MC. I’ve visited a handful and found that it was a bit shady how they did business…essentially, promise you everything upfront and then underdeliver. With Dynasty though, there’s an official contract with all the details of what you are getting. Plus they are fluent in English and Chinese, so there’s no accent. I’ve met with a handful of MCs and they unfortunately all carried heavy accents and it was so disappointing. As far as pricepoint, they are definitely more expensive then your typical Asian place, but they are not unreasonable and definitely flexible. I am having my wedding at a Western venue but it was important for me to have someone that at the reception that would speak the language so I was glad to find them. Don’t be afraid of their pricelist, Chris is very flexible. Definitely worth a meeting.
