Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

I Am The Wedding Distractor

February 13th, 2007 @ 4:51 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Okay, this weekend was supposed to be super wedding weekend! Taking pictures of myself in my veil/tiara, taking pictures of the pearls I just got to match said tiara, and calling some florists and officiants.

What did I do instead? Ummm… Wore my ebay veil around the house, ate spaghetti, played Princess Peach (seriously had it since Christmas and STILL haven’t beaten it), did one whopping load of laundry and ate two birthday cakes. Okay, not whole cakes, but we were forced to take them home, so I probably will end up eating two. Oh, and I managed to leave my placecards at my aunt’s house, and made a stupid promise I’d get my license by summer. What have I done?

We have yet to book our officiant, or even interview them. I spoke with one on the phone and he seemed overly excited to do our wedding. Acting like a teenager again, I took this exaggerated excitement as something bad. Why is that like a teenager? Because I was a stupid girl who thought anyone who showed any decent affection was obviously wrong for me. And now I’m marrying one of those guys, interesting.

Anyway, I digress. We need to find a florist, but instead I sent flower girl dress links to Karen, our flowergirl’s mum. When she responded by saying Summer may be a better time to look, I realized I wasn’t putting the priorities first. Yeah, it is likely my three and a half year old cousin will grow more between now and November than she will from September to November. It really does make more sense when you think of it that way.

So, I think I’m trying to do the things that are a little more fun, and a little less panic-inducing right now. Sure, it’s not very smart to put off these things. In fact, I had a nightmare that I was in my dress, waiting to be married when the officiant didn’t show up. Because I DIDN’T FIND ONE. How is that not a sign to get going?

Are you trying to substitute the fun things (dresses, shoes, veils) for things that aren’t as fun (interviewing, making spread sheets, guest lists) in your wedding?

I’m right there with you. I have all of my centerpieces done, but I haven’t sent out my invites. I’m supposed to be doing them this weekend, and instead I want to go shoe shopping and find ribbons for the programs. I have the problem of focusing on the little stuff (like ribbons) and not on the big stuff (like the cake).

That said, I have found a florist and it was pretty easy. Since I’m in LA, I went to LA bridezilla site Miss Lemon posted about and called a few florist with good recommendations. I met with two, and the second one was just perfect. It wasn’t as hard as I thought.

But that’s life–you put it off and when you finally get it done you think, “Why did I put that off? It was actually fun.”

Oh, god yes. I’ve got it easy, though: I make my FI do all the stuff I don’t want to. I wanted to elope and he wanted a traditional wedding, so I told him he could deal with the planning. I’m still doing plenty, of course, but it’s awesome to be able to say “hey, honey, we need to do X — can you take care of that this week.” I highly recommend it!
