More Than Meets The Eye

February 13th, 2007 @ 9:34 am by Mrs. Plumeria

I blogged a looonnnng time ago about Hibiscus Florals, a Canada-based company that specializes in “silk” florals that are exceptionally well-made and realistic-looking (perfect for destination brides who want to take care of this ahead of time, or outdoor brides with bouquets of more delicate blooms, to ease worries about wilting).

I decided a while ago to order a customized bouquet and boutonniere set to use for our wedding portrait shoot, which is scheduled for a month or so before the wedding. I worked directly with Jackie and Mark, the two owners of Hibiscus Florals, and my experience collaborating with them was absolutely wonderful. They asked questions, clarified things for confused me multiple times, and went above and beyond to exceed my wishes!

Finally, yesterday evening, my beautiful bouquet and boutonniere arrived. I couldn’t even speak when I saw the contents of the package — the items inside look so real and live, even close up it’s hard to tell that they’re not. The bouquet looks even more beautiful than I imagined, and if my future mother-in-law was not in the floral business and handling all of our flowers personally, I would definitely use it for the actual wedding day (and trust me, I’m picky!!). I think, at this point, some photos are in order…

Jackie did a beautiful job of arranging the flowers — she even accomodated a specific request to place the soft petals of the white dendrobium orchids over the stamens of the callas, to downplay them a little. She also made it the perfect size: when I told her I was petite and tiny, she knew right away that the diameter of the flowers should be smaller than normal to match.

The stems, with the pretty satin wrap. I have another gold ribbon that I may criss-cross around the cream ribbon, like on some other bouquets I’ve seen.

Mr. Plumeria’s boutonniere. Perfection! … I can’t believe it’s not real.

My favorite part of both of these? I can stick them in a vase afterwards and keep them as a keepsake/meaningful home decor forever. <3333

I’m so glad you still like this company - I ended up getting my entire bridal party flowers from them after reading you entry. This is definately the better option for me - orchid bouts in the middle of July, outdoor wedding with a ton of hugging would have been murder on real flowers!

Your flowers look great! It’s hard to believe they are not real! I went the silk route as well and it’s the best choice I made!!!

They’re unbelievable! I wouldn’t have known if you hadn’t said. Thanks for the option. I hadn’t really given much thought to flowers yet but I think I’d prefer these.

My mom used silk flowers for her wedding, and she still has her bouquets. I am planning to use some of these flowers in my bouquet of real flowers. Just thought you might like to hear how this alternative can be made into a family tradition/heirloom!

Kris — great idea! And gji7: I know you’ll be happy w/ what you receive from Mark and Jackie. I can’t believe how real these things look and even feel!

I’ve been going back and forth on the whole real vs silk flower decision. I’m picky and the issue of silk’s being tacky or a ‘faux pas’ vs the practicalty & cost has made it difficult for me to decide but after seeing your pics and reading your raves…I think I’m going to go the silk route. Did it cost more to go with your own design vs the ones they have on the web? BTW- you did an awesome job designing your bouquet, it’s BEAUTIFUL!!

Cammie — I think prices vary depending on how far from a pre-designed bouquet your idea is, how big it is (how many flowers used) and perhaps the type of flower used. I really do wholeheartedly recommend Hibiscus, though — Jackie will take your ideas and run with them if you don’t have a set idea of what you want. She did have a lot of input to mine, though I was pretty specific. Just make sure if you have any specific colors you want or want to avoid, size issues, etc. you address them as you collaborate! :) Good luck!
