White vs. Ivory Wedding Dresses

February 13th, 2007 @ 9:16 pm by Mrs. Bee

A friend of mine just purchased a beautiful ivory wedding dress, but is having second thoughts because her mom wants her to get a white dress. I’m actually a fan of ivory myself, because it’s a more flattering shade. But to alleviate her doubts, let’s do a poll!

Is your wedding dress:

Many brides-to-be think that you have to or should wear a white dress for your first wedding. I think that tradition is a definitely a thing of the past, as evidenced by the popularity of gowns with color today. What are your thoughts on the whole white vs. ivory debate?

i’ve always liked ivory better. it’s softer and not as harsh as white…and to me, it looks more flattering (at least against my own skin tone, which is on the more tan/olive side). i like champagne colored dresses too. but really, i’d pick the color according to one’s skin tone/color.

Ivory looked much better on me. When I told FI the color he said he always imagined me in a white dress. I told him if I hadn’t said anything he wouldn’t know the difference- it’s a light ivory.

While I was trying on dresses I kept thinking that the ivory ones they were bringing me were actually white. Mine is a dark ivory–an antiqued lace–so it looks a bit darker than regular ivory–but normally I can’t tell the difference unless the ivory is beside a white dress. Unless a bride stands beside someone wearing a white dress on her wedding day (which I would hope isn’t very likely), her dress will look as white as can be.

Ivory looks so much like white. In my mind, my ivory dress is definitely still a white dress.

One should not choose ivory just because it’s ivory or white because it’s white. A bride should wear one or the other based on her skin tone.

My dress was ivory. Ivory is much softer and looked so much better against my skin.

Although I am a traditionalist for the most part, I didn’t see ivory or white being a major issue. Most people couldn’t tell and commented on my beautiful, “white” dress…

the white vs. ivory thing is a generational thing. most people our age don’t even know about this stereotype.

i was anti ivory but then all of the people working at the bridal stores told me ivory was my color…actually all the white dresses i tried on looked really cheap on me regardless of how expensive they were…the dress i ended up getting was ivory..and i loved it..it looked so much more classy and elegant :)

ivory would look better if you have yellow skin tone…however, i think it is best if you try on both…for your wedding day…i doubt people will know the difference however, if you are having an all-white wedding than that could be different.

Yes - try them both on and see what works for you! While it is traditional to wear stark white, it isn’t very complimentary on most people. I was definitely an ‘ivory’ person, and my girlfriend is definitely a ‘white’ person.

When I look at my wedding photos, I don’t immediately think, “look at my ivory dress” since it looks white compared to all the other color around me. Nobody will walk up to you with a white piece of printer paper and scold you for not wearing white. Do what makes you happy :)

Hope that helps!

down with only white! Find a dress you love and take it in whatever color it comes. Amen.

totally depends on your preference and skin color, not “tradition.”

Ivory! Actually, most people look better in ivory, it’s a richer color compared to stark white.

I agree with WeezerMonkey — you should choose based on what your skin tone looks like with either. I chose ivory because I felt it complemented my skin tone, but other girls may look better in white. In general, though, it seems that ivory is more flattering than white, but it depends on the fabric too. Silk white is often a soft candlelit white that is beautiful!

i don’t think that whole virgin thing should matter when it comes to picking a dress. ivory looked better against my skin.

I love that you say the tradition is to wear white for ‘your first wedding’!!! Tradition is surely to only get married the once?!In my experience working in a bridal fabric shop, ivory is simply an off-white and is in no way a colour category in its own right. People came in, claiming ‘ivory’ as a definitive colour and it can vary from rich cream to a nearly-white-in-the-wrong/right-light. IMHO, bright, rich white really only suits very black skin tones and just drains the colour from caucasion skins. I agree with most of the commentors that it’s more to do with style and preference than any idea of tradition or necessity. x

Mine is ivory, a gold toned ivory. I have fair skin and whites just washedme out too much.

My gown is ivory. The sample was ivory, and when I had it on and was standing on the little plinth, some random bride came up to me and told me that I looked beautiful in it and it definitely was my color. When I tried on a white gown for color (same manufacturer, different style) the salesladies took one look at me, shook thier heads, and cried “ivory!” White would have been easier for accessories, but ivory it is. And I love the ivory version anyway–it’s a beautiful, rich shade, and it makes the fabric look more sumptuous.

And I don’t think in this day and age that it has much to do with your sexual status–no one’s going to look at me on my wedding day and say, “Well, *she’s* not a virgin. Look at that ivory gown and those BLUE shoes!”

Mine is white. I tried on several gowns in both colors, but the ivory just looked weird compared to my skin, which was odd because I have a natural tan. So I chose white.

Mine is “diamond white” but it is basically ivory. I have olive skin and the white just didn’t look right.
