Heartbreak Diamonds

February 14th, 2007 @ 4:58 pm by Mrs. Peach

Hmmm cnn had an interesting article on a new auction site that allows people to sells ring after breakups.

I dunno how I feel about that. On one hand, I can see that both the seller and buyer are getting a really good deal. On the other hand, I would feel a little weird buying or receiving a ring that was being sold because of an unhappy ending of another relationship… What do you think?

This has always been my issue with diamonds especially with engagement rings no one wants a used one so their resale value is very low. I wouldn’t be against buying one but I think I would want to do something that would “purify” it in my mind. Some sort of ceremonial thing, have someone in a happy marriage wear it for a bit, give it some sort of bath (ie soak it in water). Is that weird? =)

hmmm… well it actually happened to my FSIL. she was engaged but the wedding was called off… she gave her e-ring to my FI and I as an “engagement present” and we were free to do whatever we wanted with it… so we took it to the diamond district and sold it, and in turn my FI used the proceeds to help buy my e-ring–which i love btw!

so happy beginnings can come from sad endings.

I really would not have a problem with that at all- I thought I would, but as I think about it, I am such a bargain hunter on ebay for shoes, clothes and jewelry that if I got a gorgeous ring for 1/3 of the cost just because some one wore it for a few months, I wouldn’t think of anything negative attached. I would just be so happy I found such a good buy! (I could always just buy it for the stones too, if I ever would change my mind once I received it)

It sounds like a good idea to me. I’ve also got a ring (wedding set) that I would like to sell, but I’ve run into the same problem - you don’t get nearly what it’s worth. I don’t believe rings can carry the baggage of a broken relationship, that’s just silly. Once new vows are taken and it is placed on a new finger, it’s just like a brand new, sparkly ring symbolizing your commitment. (Which I have learned now, not to take that commitment lightly).

Do you have any idea what the name of this website is? I’ve tried googling it but I can’t seem to find the actual site!!!

I don’t think I would have a problem with it. Even though it wasn’t the right ring for that couple- it might be for me! And it helps me get a bigger rock- wahoo- gotta love the bling.

I looked at the site and kinda think it’s a scam … it looks to me like 47th street diamond vendors just auctioning off their usual goods — just like on ebay … and trying to make people think they’re getting a “deal”. Not real couples with real rings to sell … regular old jewelers trying a new way to get $$.
