Mrs. Kiwi's Picture
Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Shooting What I Want

February 14th, 2007 @ 1:26 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

I know that we’re supposed to give a list of all the pictures we want Melody (our photographer) to take on our wedding day. Aside from a few images that I know are standard, I’m not quite sure what other pictures I want.

There is one that I want taken for sure, one with my parents and my brother, possibly one of the few little pictures we have of us since we’ve been adults. It’s funny, because despite the fact that I love my wedding dress and I can’t wait to wear it - I’m a little bummed that everyone will be dressed up - but I’ll be in my dress. Like it would be a little more “normal” to take a family picture in regular dress-up clothes. Maybe it would make our family seem a little more average, instead of what we actually are.

Another picture I have in my mind is one Mr. Kiwi has yet to agree to. Across from our venue (like, literally a minute away) is Dinah’s Restaurant, a family-style diner (as seen in Little Miss Sunshine). Dinah’s has some past with Melody and I, our first brownie “kidnap” breakfast was held here when we were seven. My late grandma, Ora, would take all of us grandkids to Dinah’s for pancakes a lot growing up. I often went with my parents when they were happier to be together. After I moved out and started dating Mr. Kiwi, that was often our place, going at least once a week. So, this leads me to my picture idea - the two of us in our wedding finery, sharing a shake (maybe chocolate, maybe vanilla). What do you think? I know it’s totally cheesy, but I just love that idea. It really would mean a lot to have this picture taken.

So, as I try to think of the pictures I know MUST be taken, maybe you can help me. What picture did you have to have? Are there any pictures I should remember to have done?

The only things I made lists of were formal group shots, all of the ones I wanted, even the ones that I knew I wouldn’t forget, and it was much easier for my photographers to just check things off on the list. I also made a list of any detail non-people shots I wanted of our decorations, since I did so much DIY I wanted to be sure I had good pictures of it. The rest I just left up to them.

I think the shake picture sounds really cute! I wish we had made some time to go take photos away from out ceremony/reception site.

Miss Kiwi I don’t think the idea is cheesy at all. I think people dressed up doing everyday things that’s representative of themselves is fun. My must have is the flower pedal toss by guests as we make our entrance, I told the photographer the moment is brief so he must capture it precisely.

You MUST get a picture at Dinah’s, preferably one of you eating a hot fudge sundae. I would skip the pictures brides like to get of their feet and shoes, unless Mr. Kiwi gets a picture of his massive feet and shoes next to yours. Also, skip the pictures of makeup brushes the pictures of someone slaving over your mascara.

Don’t forget that you can take a shot of the family at the rehearsal dinner if they’re all going to be there - that way everyone’s looking nice, but not in wedding finery.

I love the shake picture, totally cute! Esp. in b/w!

Other must-take shots you might want to consider besides the standard group shots might be:
college friends (a great one to send into the alumnae magazine)
jumping/action shots
special guests that you want to make sure are captured (older relatives, people you don’t see often, etc)
moments in time you want captured, especially those you won’t see b/c you’ll be busy doing other things (toasts from every angle - you watching, them toasting, peoples faces watching your first dance, etc).

I absolutely love the idea of you guys all dressed up at the Diner! Those kind of pictures are always so cute and end up being your favorites. Would be a cute way to incorporate your grandma’s memorie too, by having a pic of you guys and a HUGE pile of pancakes!

Make sure that you get some not so posed pics of you and your family. My sister didn’t really get any of casual shots of the family. So think of groups of people you want and make sure you let your photog know :) Good luck!

Yes a bit cheesy, but SOOO CUUUUTE!!! You HAVE to do it!!!! I feel like years from now that’s a picture I would love to have on my wall even more than the nice formal portraits!! And yeah I also agree that you should try to get some not posed pictures, my favorites are generally those moments where the bride is laughing with her best friend, or things like that. Give her a list of the most important people to get some non-posed pics of!

I love the idea of the shake picture!!
The one picture I definitely want at my wedding is also a little weird — and kind of disgusting, when you think about it. After everyone is done with dessert, I want a picture of my fiance drinking the chocolate out of the chocolate fountain with a straw. The only thing he cares about in the whole wedding is having a chocolate fountain, and getting one is costing over $1500. My parents joke that it is definitely worth it, because they are afraid he won’t show up without the fountain — so I want to make sure to get a picture of him enjoying it to give to my parents.

Thanks for all the suggestions- some of these I would never have thought of!!

Julie, I think that would be such a cute idea! I think it’s so sweet to send a picture of your fiance with the straw to your parents!

I love the diner idea!
When i was making my list, i google imaged wedding pictures, just to see what shots/combinations/angles caught my fancy.
I showed the shots to my photographer just to give her an idea of what interests me. (It probably helps that she’s a college friend, but any good photographer will want you to be happy.)

Nony Mouse

Some of our best shots were completely unplanned — we had a photographer who would take formal group shots, but tended toward photojournalism. “Let’s see the rings” didn’t produce us holding hands on a table, but two matching smirks and out-thrust left hands with the backs to the camera. It was perfect.
The planned stop-and-kiss halfway down the aisle, the planned streamers (that my DH forgot were coming), and the posed “smelling the bouquet” pictures all looked good. The best of the unplanned: putting in an earring, the smirks, the MOH dancing with her husband of 25 years, the flowergirl having collapsed in exhaustion on a bench, the head table when people weren’t interested in following assigned seating but were visiting animatedly, the shot of my mom and two of my cousins (MOH and houseparty) cutting up immediately before the ceremony, and such are the ones that capture what the evening was and are the ones that bring back the emotional memories.
At some point, perfection can come no closer until you are no longer striving for it. The perfect shot of the two of you in the diner will probably not occur by saying ‘cheese’ at precisely the right moment. It might happen if to two of you happen to share a stupid joke and your eyes meet and you can’t help but smile; maybe if you stick your tounge out at him or you make a fish face around the straw; possibly if you just hold hands… or that’s my take on it anyway.

i agree with mrs. bee…take a look at mrs. ladybug’s diner awesome pictures. mr and mrs. ladybug aren’t dressed up but the pictures were shot through a long lens so they turned out looking really natural. her pictures looked like screenshots from the scene in Good Will Hunting when he and Skylar are on a date at a diner. :@) I think your idea is great!
