Sore All Over!

February 14th, 2007 @ 6:28 pm by Mrs. Pearl

In an effort to get into better shape over this wedding, I have made a solemn vow of diet and exercise. I have been at it for the last 4 weeks and thus far, have managed to shed about 17 lbs. Unfortunately, the diet alone didn’t work, so I MUST exercise. Tragic for a wannabe princess like me who hates to sweat.

I’m lucky that Mr. Pearl used to work out with a world-level competing bodybuilder, so he’s given me good tips on how to effectively work out. For example, did you know that walking at a decent incline on the treadmill is just about as effective as running on a flat treadmill? Much better on the joints, too. He has also shown me the proper technique for weight training so I don’t hurt myself.

On Sunday, we went to the gym for our back workout. I have a pretty weak upper body, so I was looking forward to strengthening up. After we left, I felt good about my workout because I’d tried so hard and done so well with my form.

I woke up on Monday feeling sore, but confident. However, as the day wore on, I got progressively more sore. By the time Monday night rolled around, I was almost incapacitated from the muscular pain. I didn’t hurt myself, it was just my muscles needing to rebuild! Mr. Pearl was sweet and rubbed the knots out, but I was in so much pain, I didn’t think I could make it to work the next day. Two ibuprofin and a full night’s sleep got me to a better place, but when I laugh (or even type this blog entry), I can feel the muscles silently crying.

Do you have any fun or funny stories from working out?

Nony Mouse

No, just commiseration. Our high school Volleyball coach was something of a terror. For two weeks before school, we had four-hour “practices” which were nothing more than exercise sessions. Running, jumping, run some more, lunge, pushup, crunch, some more jump drills, and if you’re lucky we’ll let you hit a ball around. None of us could walk normally after we cooled down. One of my classmates had a second floor bedroom. She slept on the couch. I couldn’t climb onto a chiropractor’s table — they had to bring out the one that you stand on that swings flat for me!
Well, maybe, there was that one time that my DH (just my bf at the time) went to a step class and came home so sore that he couldn’t walk for two days. I mean, he’s hunched over, and he has to use his hands to pick up his leg and place it to take a step forward. Most awkward looking gait you’ve ever seen.
Hot water & epsom salts. And drink plenty of water and get your minerals, protiens blah blah blah…

I don’t have funny stories from working because I don’t ever work out. I guess my funny story will be when I go to try on my dress next week and it doesn’t fit because I gained weight. If that happens then I will have a “funny story from not working out.”

My first year in college, I joined the crew team. I did four pathetic squats at our first “gym” day. The first one I attempted, I actually fell over onto my bum.

For one full week afterwards, I was sore. This includes having to hurl myself down stairs (because my legs wouldn’t bend voluntarily otherwise) and staring at the toilet in disbelief - it’s the small things we take for granted.

in high school, a friend of mine and I decided we wanted to head down to Highpoint University in NC to go to a Strength and Endurance camp (first mistake).
after the first day, we were literally CRAWLING around our dorm room; the camp was only 3 days long, but we surely suffered. I’ve never been that sore in my entire life.

Congrats, Miss Pearl!

My funniest/best workout story is when I ran into the drummer of Maroon 5, one of my favorite bands, while working out. And the funniest part was that the gym happened to have been playing a Maroon 5 song, so it was a fun conversation starter.

Not really funny, but sympathy and a similar story. On Monday, Mr Ski and I finally worked out. I hadn’t worked out since September! We did the card game exercise that I made up several years ago.

Each suit gets a different exercise (hearts are cardio, diamonds are abs, spades are butt/legs, and clubs are arms/shoulders). You do however many of the exercise the card says (according to the value of the card). IE - Jack of diamonds would be 11 sit-ups. Anyway, if you count Aces as 1 you end up doing 91 of each exercise.

I did 91 lunges with 5 pounds weights throughout the workout. Two days later, I can’t even sit down on the couch without falling onto it, bending over to pick things is practically impossible, but yelping makes it a little easier. Mr. Ski thinks it’s funny to poke my sore muscles and laugh when i wince. Mean Mr. Ski : (

Wow, 17 lbs. that is amazing! What are some of those good tips??
No funny stories here, but can definitely relate to the pain! And having to wear heels around the office the next day was rough.

Miss Pearl, you should be careful! 17 lbs in 4 weeks?! As someone in medicine, let me point out that it is very unhealthy to lose more than 2 pounds/week, especially in terms of stress on your heart. While you might look fabulous for your wedding, it’s not worth it if it’s going to cause premature heart problems. Diet and exercise for weight loss is fabulous — just be very careful and don’t overdo it, as you are much more likely to regain the weight (plus more!) after the wedding. Seek medical advice if you are aiming to lose so much weight!

I heard about the incline treadmill thing, but I didn’t really realize it was better for your joints - thanks for convincing me. Sometimes it’s hard not to get competitive with the beautiful people running at 8mph next to you on a perfectly flat incline.

You lost 17lbs in 4 weeks!!! YOU ARE MY IDOL! Can I please have your food diary and your workout diary! Well done, well done. The muscle pain will go away, just make sure you are stretching enough that helps loads and hot baths. Again, I am very impressed with your progress. I better get my butt to the gym.

Seriously, 17 lbs in 4 weeks without exercise!? What the heck are you eating (or not eating)???

LOL NOOOOO…17 lbs. in 4 weeks WITH exercise. My diet is pretty normal, actually — I eat three full meals per day and have two snacks. I also take my full array of vitamins.

The diet and exercise are more than just for the wedding, it’s for my own health. It might sound like I’ve lost a lot of weight thus far, but I actually have a long way to go. Unfortunately, there’s no magic pill or formula — it’s really just as simple as everyone says. Diet and exercise. Darn.

Julie: Thanks for the input. I actually am doing this at a doctor’s advice and under the recommended guidelines he had. Actually, I’m eating more calories than the first doctor even recommended. I still eat probably 2000 calories per day, but they come from better foods — no fast food, fried food, grease, or sweets and more whole grains, fruits and veggies, and lean meats. Oh, and drinking water (which I NEVER used to do). As for working out, I’m never typically excessive. We do weights three or four days per week and cardio about 4 times per week (30 minute sessions).

Thank you Sally! Your message(s) are really sweet :)

As for food stuff, I’m doing the following:

Breakfast: Vitamin Water, Slimfast meal replacement bar, and banana (or other fruit)

Snack: If I get hungry, I have a couple of rice cakes (which strangely, I love).

Lunch: Lean Cuisine or SmartOnes, 2 cups of salad with Wishbone Spritzer dressing (one calorie per spray), another fruit (or no sugar added applesauce), sugar free chocolate Jello pudding.

Snack: Pria bar

Dinner: Varies. Typically another 2 cups of salad and a lot of protein (chicken, red meat). What’s helped me be successful at dinner is making lower fat versions of food I like.

For example, instead of spaghetti and meatballs or sausage, I make whole wheat spaghetti and spicy turkey Italian sausage. I’m not normally one for replacing beef with turkey, but you honestly can’t tell the difference. I’ve also done homemade French bread pizza with lowfat cheese, lowfat pepperoni (which tastes just like regular to me), and green peppers.
