Open Question: Affordable BM Dresses

February 15th, 2007 @ 11:26 am by Open Question

Hello Mrs. Bee, :)

I was wondering if you or the other devoted weddingbee readers could help me.

I’m in need of finding green (celery or kiwi-ish green) bridesmaid dresses for my May 2007 wedding in northern New Jersey. I’m originally from Orange County, CA, and my 3 BMs are flying in from the OC and San Francisco. Originally, my BMs had thought maybe to get this Dessy dress in the color Cypress.

Open Question: Affordable BM Dresses : wedding advice bridesmaid dress Dessy.JPG

However, it’s a bit out of their price range and has been vetoed by the girls. After purchasing over $300 plane tickets to come out here for me, I don’t want to push them into spending more than they would like. (I’ve offered to cover 1/2 the cost of the dress and the shipping/tax costs. But they’ve refused.) Here’s my dilemma, I’m looking for green tea-length bridesmaid dresses that are under $100. Since there is only 3 months left and with the smaller budget, I’m SUPER stressed that I won’t be able to find any dresses.

Do you think you could ask your readers if they know of or have seen any dresses that fit my needs? I’m an internet novice and pretty much don’t know where to search. Thank you very much for your help. Can’t tell you how much weddingbee.com has helped me plan my wedding. :)

I heart weddingbee!!

My color is Kiwi and I had a great deal of luck with Pearl’s Place. http://www.pearlsplace.com . Just call them and tell them the maker and style you want. They’ll give you a price on the phone. They deeply discounted the Jim Hjelm and Siri dresses that my girl’s wanted and say they will be in soon. Best of luck, from one Jersey Girl to another! :-)

I’m getting Bill Levkoff 271 for $105 from Netbride. It’s tea length, and the Levkoff color “Euro Sage” might meet your color ideas. Good luck!

I recommend you check out the sale portion of the J Crew site. Here are some examples of dresses listed:

Alfred Angelo has very affordable prices. Their bridesmaid dresses are here: http://www.alfredangelo.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/COLLECTIONS.displayCollection/categoryID/772F03C9-DE43-4942-BFA0-DA77E21EBD65/startResult/0/fromAdvancedSearch/0
They have a lot of “cocktail length” (knee length) dresses, and a few tea length dresses. They have about 6 shades of green to choose from. Since the colors look different on the website than in person, you shoudl find a retailer in your area:

If the prices at the store are too high, check http://www.netbride.com , http://www.houseofbrides.com , orhttp://www.RKbridal.com

Also, houseofbrides has an alfred angelo dress in green that runs $107 there..
http://www.houseofbrides.com
http://www.netbride.com - they claim that if you find a dress they offer for lower, they’ll beat any price.
Davids Bridal has several in Clover that run about $110 and there’s the advantage of trying them on and buying them right off the rack potentially.

Good luck!

With your time constraints and price limitations, you might have to buy off the rack, in which case bluefly.com’s clearance page might have some good options. Also, I’ve found that Loehmann’s in NYC has a great formal dress dept. Loehmanns can also be found in NJ, but not sure if the selection is as good at other locations as it is in NYC.

thanks for the help everyone. i’m wondering if there’s enough time to order the dresses. i don’t want them to pay for the rush ordering. how long does it normally take to order a dress?

I am in love with that dress! I really wanted it for my bridesmaids, but we didn’t like any of the colors.

Best of luck…

I am about to recommend David’s Bridal…I know, GASP! But I have worn three dresses from DB and had no issues–but never did I require alterations. I paid 99 for two of them (it was actually the same dress for two different weddings in different colors) and a hair over 100 for the other.

J.Crew has great choices, and they would get here fast! My BM’s paid 150 for theirs. It’s worth a look if nothing else!

Picking a solid color that can be found anywhere would be a good idea. If you pick a black or brown dress instead of a pink or blue, you’ll have more options, I think.

Also, you could always say “here’s the wedsite and color, pick a style” or say “everyone get your own black cocktail dress.” I considered doing the latter and as long as your wedding isn’t super formal, I think the ecclectic look is great!

How sweet of you and of them!

I’m getting married in May 2007 as well, and recently moved to Michigan from ‘the OC’. I had your same concerns as far as costs due to travel and I was also looking for dresses in a green color — so hopefully this tip is helpful to you.

My MOH recently flew out here to look for BM dresses and we found there to be a wide variance in the shades of green from designer to designer. What one called ‘Kiwi” is what I would call neon green. I would recommend going to look at the color swatches or samples at your local brldal store before ordering anything on-line. We ended up getting a really pretty strapless, chiffon, tea length dress by Alexia designs for $100. We got it in a light sage green. I’m really happy with what we found in part because my MOH was able to try it on and I could see it would flatter all my BMs and I was comfortable that the color would actually complement my wedding color scheme.

hi janet, i got mine

http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/01/31/bm-
dresses/ from netbride for $125 each including shipping. but it did take about 2 months to receive them. i would check with them to see how long it usually takes. if you try to order during their popular season it might take longer…

have you checked group usa? they have one near the bay area and not sure if ontario is close to oc… but they have good dresses (you have to go to the store vs. the stuff they have online) you can get off the rack for a decent price. also i’d def check big dept stores like macy’s and nordstrom. i think if my bms weren’t from ALL over the place, i would have gone this route.

good luck! will keep my eye out and let you know if i see anything sometime soon.

If you are from OC, then check out these 2 stores, they are located close together in Huntington Beach and carry reasonably priced bridesmaid dresses

http://jinnysbridal.com/

one of the many brands Castle for brides carries is this…and I know that the BM dresses are priced in the low $100s

I posted earlier, but my post isn’t here. I guess it’s because I had links to two dresses on J Crew’s site.

Anyway, if you check out the sale section they have dresses in hunter green (it looks more like your color than you may think from the name), and at an additional 20% off the sale prices, they are well within your budget. Check them out. You have to go to the sale section of the site to see them though.
