About Mrs. Apple

Attention New Yorkers

February 16th, 2007 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Apple

I’m getting really excited about traveling again. I haven’t traveled outside of Dallas in over 8 months and I’m beginning to get suffocated. Growing up I was fortunate enough to travel every 4-6 months, whether it was a weekend trip to Austin or a mini vacation to the west coast to see family members. But with the upcoming wedding I’ve had to really curb my travel enthusiasm and stay put for 1 year in order to keep $ in the bank. I’m itching to get away though.

The girls and I decided to take my bachelorette party to NYC next month. We chose this city because 1) I’m over Las Vegas - no offense but I can only take Las Vegas for no more than 2 days. Plus I don’t really drink much, don’t like buffets, don’t gamble, and can’t afford to shop at Valentino. 2) I have one cousin, 2 good friends who live in NYC and my other friend (the second bride) lives in Chicago so we felt this would be the best place to party it up and reconnect. 3) I love to eat good food and explore.

I’ve been to NYC a handful of times and loved every minute of it. I think most of the girls have done the touristy stuff in NYC so we’d like to just make it more of a leisurely weekend. My question is - does anyone have any suggestions on a “MUST EAT, MUST SEE list while in NYC”? Our hotel is in Midtown but we’re open to cab it if it’s worth the meal or activity!

Only a few girls can make it to dinner on Friday night (Saturday night will be party time!) so i’m trying to find some yummy NYC restaurants to go to and a late dessert cafe. On Saturday afternoon, I’d like to check out Chelsea Market and find some good gourmet items. For those who have been there, should I check it out?

For sure we’re going pole dancing, just like Miss Strawberry! We’re heading to Exotic Dance Central for a couple of hours Saturday late afternoon. I know it sounds really raunchy, but it’s completely harmless. It’s just a fun night for the girls to learn how to work it on a spinning pole, learn how shake that ass, but most of all just laugh really hard at each other.

I’d like to try some great seafood restaurants but no steaks or mexican food please - I live in Texas remember. :) Here are some suggestions I’ve gotten thus far on food.

Restaurants -
Pizza Lombardis (Italian)
Blue Ribbon Sushi
Momofokussam Bar (Sushi I think)
Little Owl (Mediterranean)
Yama Sushi
Blue Fin (Seafood)
Crispo (Italian)
Shanghai Joes (soup dumplings)
Normas (brunch on Saturday morning or Sunday)

Dessert/Cafe -
Max Brenner (good frozen chocolate granita)
Serendipity (the movie scene and good hot chocolate)
Cafe Lago (late night dessert/huge selection)
Rice to Riches (rice pudding, heard it was the best ever!)

I also need help with lounges/bars. We’re really struggling to find a nice place that will accomodate 20 girls on Saturday night. I don’t want to party like a rock star but more to just lounge around and enjoy each others company.

So I need your help New Yorkers, please provide me with some suggestions for great NYC food and lounges.

Just so you know, Momofoku Ssam Bar is not sushi. Its like a Korean burrito place. They also have lots of other offerings, including noodles and pork dishes.

I just went to a birthday party last week at a lounge called Black Door (127 West 26th St. bet. 6th and 7th aves) and it was great. They reserved the back room for the party (it was still opened for other ppl but if you head over there with 20 girls, you’ll take over the space). The space was clean, spacious and the bartender was great–he put on a cd mix that the bday girl made and they even let us order pizza from an outside vendor.

Blue Smoke has some of the Best Ribs I’ve ever had and the dessert platter is also amazing. They are on 28th between Park Ave South and 3rd Ave….definitely worth a trip!

For late-night dessert, Kyotofu is in Midtown on the West Side. They specialize in Japanese desserts, all very artfully presented and not expensive at all. Also Chickalicious offers 3 course dessert menu for about $12.50 i think. It is my absolute favorite dessert place in NYC!

For dinner, I suggest Otto down in Greenwich Village. They have nice big tables, great Italian food (I recommend the Pasta Carbonara) and it is a great place for a large group of girls to get together!

Enjoy NYC!

I live in NYC, and honestly I feel that Chelsea Market is sort of of yawn. If I was visiting NYC, this is probably a place I would skip.

I highly recommend Norma’s– BUT be prepared to wait two hours. You can put your name on the list and then go shop at Bergdorf’s or something, but it’s a real wait. If you don’t want to wait, Petit Abeille is great for brunch, and so is Cafeteria. You girls also might have fun going to the Slipper Room on the Lower East Side– they have a burlesque show on Friday nights (for five bucks, I think) and it’s tons of fun and will probably inspire you for your pole dancing the next day. As for amazing seafood, Milos is really great, and so is Mermaid Inn. Enjoy, ladies!

When will you be in NYC? If it is springtime, you should try the TRAPEZE SCHOOL (remember, the Sex and the City episode?).. it’s right in the Chelsea piers area and a lot of fun! I think it is like $60 pp, we all did it together (4 girls).

As for must-eat restaurants:
Seafood - One if by Land Two if by Sea, Mermaid Inn, Marys Fishcamp

Lounges: G2 Lounge (next to Gaslight), ONE Little West 12th, Serena’s (8th and 23rd street - below Hotel Chelsea), Red Sky Bar (Murray Hill area)

let me make 2 corrections for your list.
for soup dumplings i’m pretty sure you mean joe’s shanghai. not shanghai joe’s. (it’s super YUMMY!)and the dessert place you’re probably looking for is cafe lalo, not cafe lago. (it’s where a scene from you’ve got mail was shot)

there’s also GREAT cuban places in the city too.
havana central. cubana cafe. are just a couple.

hope it’s a bit warmer for you when you get out here. b/c right now, it’s BRRRRRRRRRRR! =)

For late night fun on Friday or Saturday, and amazing “snacky” food like brie and truffle fries (as well as other around-the-world samplers), check out Tour Restaurant:
http://www.tourrestaurantnyc.com/
Their menu is online and they are open until 6am. I would make a reservation for a larger group, especially late at night.
They have amazing and creative drinks (the blackberry mojito, for example). Or you could go for dinner– they are less busy around the dinner hour.

just a couple of thoughts…joe’s shanghai in chinatown is way better than the one in midtown - and cheaper! the carbonera at crispo’s is so incredible i dream about it. =) there are two momofuku locations - momofuku ssam bar and momofuku. the former is a korean burrito place…think pork wrapped in lettuce leaves. the latter is a noodle bar where the wait can be really long…but is totally worth it!! btw, norma’s takes reservations through opentable.com…skip the wait!

chelsea market does carry very unique foodie finds but i agree with the poster above, i’d skip it as a “destination.”

for desserts try Cafe Mozart on the upper west side (70th and broadway). they’re open late but you might want to make a reservation since they’re popular.

their menu is monstrous– and they have a live pianist most nights, which makes sense since they’re called Cafe Mozart. There’s cute thing on the menu, like “Salieri’s Revenge.” But even if you don’t like music, if you like chocolate– go :)

if you’re going to try joe’s shanghai, def go to the ones in chinatown, elmhurst or flushing. the midtown one is pricier with smaller servings.

for japanese noodles go to menchanko tei! their menchanko noodle soup is great for a cold day.
marumi is awesome for sushi.
won jo (32nd street) or jjangtuh (flushing) for korean bbq (they use charcoal for cooking)
veniero’s for dessert. the strawberry shortcake is really good, but be prepared to wait.
azucar has decent cuban food and GREAT mojitos. there’s also a cigar roller in front who gives them away to the diners.

ideas of things to do:
madam toussad’s wax museum
“bodies” exhibit, or just seeing the seaport in general
lips nyc, where the waitresses are in drag (alot of bachelorette parties here!) http://www.lipsnyc.com/

have fun!!

essex is a pretty good loung/bar place in the lower east side, you should be able to section off a space for you and your girls on the 2nd floor i think?

also if you want a canoli, you must MUST go to Veniero’s, they’re the best!
