Gift Baskets For Out Of Town Guests

February 16th, 2007 @ 4:28 pm by Mrs. Lily

I have my work cut out for me next week! I will be flying the friendly skys to Arizona for my bridal shower, and for anything and everything that needs to be done before the wedding. This is my last trip home so I know it will be crazy hectic.

One of the major items on my “to do” list is to put together the gift baskets for those staying at the hotel. When I was home in December, I bought 60 baskets at a decoratorer’s wholesale warehouse. Now it’s time to fill them! I bought my first item today - Power Bar Nut Naturals in Fruit and Nut.

If you get these yummy treats from a place like drugstore.com (which generally has good prices), it’s $18 for 15 bars plus shipping. Buuuut… if you live in NYC and go to Ralph’s Discount City (95 Chamber’s Street), they are 3 for $1. Yep. I got 60 bars for $20. Amazing, right? I always buy my snacks at Ralph’s because their prices are so good. There are only so many goodies I can fit in my suitcase so I had to limit it to that and a bit of candy, but if you are having an NYC wedding (or close enough that a car is involved), they are a great place for candy and snacks! Their candy bar selection is huge!

So, now I have to figure out what else to put in these puppies. Here are my ideas so far:

  • Arizona Iced Tea
  • Water
  • Chips
  • Gum
  • Nuts
  • Some sort of chocolate

I don’t think that’s enough, esp. since the baskets are kinda big. Anyone got ideas of fun stuff/yummy stuff to include? What do you all have tucked away in your baskets/bags/gable boxes if you are doing such a thing?

I haven’t figured out everything that will go in ours, but I am definitely having those little one pot packages of coffee from a local place. I want to have as many local goodies as possible.

Don’t forget paper things too! Favorite restaurants in the vicinity, things to do, schedule of events, etc. You might also want to think about something if there are any kid guests - coloring/activity books and crayons, etc. If it’s going to be an outdoor ceremony, sunblock too!

What about disposable cameras and/or extra batteries for guest’s digital cameras? I know I have a camera that takes AAs. Also, what about the kinds of things you think you’ve packed but forgotten and had to run to the drugstore to buy? I know that not very wedding-y but practical and appreciated all the same.

I think we’re giving local wine, a wine opener, disposable wine glasses, crackers, and a jar of home-made olive tapanade. Also bunches of brochures, local info, maybe a map. My sister gave us a coffee and chocolate themed basket which had travel coffee mugs, flavored coffee from a local coffee shop, and Harry & David’s moose munch.

For family members, a list of who is staying where. Also, this may sound silly, but I like bottled water when I am staying a hotel.

We were at a wedding out of state that also included mini tissue packs(so useful since I forgot to bring tissues!) and a pack of cards. The cards were so nice while we were waiting around for the reception to start.

I am a little crazy DIY but I am making chocolate chip cookies and dipping pretzels in chocolate and putting them in little cellophane bags with ribbons. I also bought snack packs of chex mix and made bottles of water with our labels on them. I went to our city office and got a visitor guide that has a map in it to include in the bags. I have about $2.50 invested into 60 guest bags.

Thanks so much for the tip on Ralph’s. We were planning on going to Costco to include bottled water and snacks, but I’ll check out Ralph’s. I also will include practical stuff like advil and tissue packets. (Check out http://www.minimus.biz for individual packets of stuff). We are getting married in Vermont, so I’m also thinking about including soft maple candies which I love.

I also will include brochures about fun things in the area (Ben & Jerry’s, Cabot, Magic Hat Brewery) and a “welcome booklet” with a letter from me and my FI along with directions to the church and restaurant and suggestion of places to eat etc. We are having a destination wedding, so all our guests will be OOT.

What about sunscreen? That’s always good, if you’re in a sunny place. If you’re having lots of drinkers, a few packages of Emergen-C is great, too, for the imbibers’ mornings after.

All of the goodies for your out of town guests can be packed in a fabulous personalized out of town welcome kit I found at http://www.chicasandbrides.com . They are $6.50 and include a large gift box with ribbon and personalized notes and labels. Really cute!

Go for what you think would be best for you. Add your personal favorites and share them with your friends. Some wine will do the trick.

You should check out The Grateful Basket. http://www.gratefulbasket.com. They specialize in only gift baskets for out-of-town guests. They will customize the basket for your theme and deliver them to the hotel for you. It knocks one more item off your to-do list! My guests were extremely pleased and touched.
