Bloomin’ Crazy

February 20th, 2007 @ 4:59 pm by Mrs. Pearl

I met with a florist on Thursday in my seeming never-ending quest to find the perfect decor artist. Her ideas were fabulous and I really felt like she understood the vision I was trying to set. She was helpful and gave great suggestions without being pushy. Another thing I liked about her was that she gave me her quote on the spot after we talked - doing it in front of me made me feel like she wasn’t going to take her time to think over how she could best nickel and dime me. :)

I loved it all…except the price.

I have always said I was a princess born into a pauper’s lifestyle. Flowers were no exception.

So, here’s a bit of a poll to see where the readers are at! Excuse my kind of poor rendition of a Likert scale. :)

How important were/are flowers to you?

My flower budget WAS $2000-$2500 (preferably closer to $2000), but I’m now in the neighborhood of $3000. So, you know, I’m addicted to flowers.

budget? what’s that?
we’re paying just over $7,000 for our flowers.

i notice when flowers/centerpieces are cheap looking or skimpy.

if i had more money to spend for the wedding it wouldn’t go into the flower budget. it’d go elsewhere for sure.

I guess I should’ve prefaced this by saying also that I only have 8 tables, so there was only a need for 8 centerpieces. thankfully, that saved a bunch.

My mom’s been working on wedding flowers w/ another designer for 15+ years. I knew it’d come in handy one day :) We’re paying around $500 for wholesale flowers, but no costs for labor or time.

The florist I met with quoted me just over $5000 for flowers. We only have 100 guests, so that’s 10 centerpieces plus a sweetheart table.

I have florist appointments scheduled pretty much every day this week, so I’ll be all flowered out in the end. But it’s good to get a perspective on how much other people are spending. Maybe $5000 isn’t overly outrageous, given some of the votes thus far!

I spent more money on the flowers than I estimated but that is okay. Both my FI and I worked together with the florist, Anna’s Flowers in Seattle, WA to come up with the best price without sacrificing the looks and kinds of flowers.

I love flowers but food is our big splurge. I found this great florist who is just starting her own business after working in the floral bus. for 8 years. She is only charging us for the flowers and not her time!

If i had extra money it would go to our honeymoon budget :)

if i’m being honest, before i was planning my own wedding, i didn’t really notice flowers, and i couldn’t tell you what kind of flowers were at any of the weddings i went to - i can tell you which ones were at a beautiful location, which ones had great food, which ones had amazing ceremonies, and which ones had great music, though.

i think it really depends on the location and season of your wedding. at a beautiful b&b in november or in a garden in june, flowers aren’t so important. in a simple ballroom, they probably make more of an impact.

i also think wedding flowers are a racket. many of the florists i talked to when i was planning my wedding had $5K minimums. it took some digging to get to a lower price point with vendors i still trusted, but i’d say it was well worth it.

I haven’t got any quotes yet, but I think I’m using a friend’s sister who is a work at home florist. She is charging us wholesale. My tastes are (IMO) pretty simple, so I hope to keep the cost down. We will only have my bouquet, a MOH bouquet, and bouts and corsages. No floral centerpieces; it’s just not important to either of us.

If we had extra money, it would go to our HM or our house.

I was *really* surprised by the results of this poll! While I appreciate gorgeous flowers as much as the next girl, I’ve never ever ever been one to pay a lot of attention to them. In fact, my bouquet isn’t even going to be made of flowers–700 stems of Swarovski crystals, baby! We’re doing Martha Stewart’s tissue paper flowers for our centerpieces, and since our ceremony is outside we have no real need for other floral decorations. I guess since I’ve put so little thought into my own flowers, it hadn’t really sunk in that other people do–if that makes any sense. I know I couldn’t imagine spending half my budget on them (which is what a $5K minimum would be!)

Different brides have different budgets and priorities, though, and I think that’s awesome :-) It’s all about what’s important to *you*.

Wow, I must say I’m definitely the odd one out so far.

We are having DIY bouquets, bouts, crosages, etc. The tables will have non-floral centerpieces. The ceremony decorations will be silk. Our flower budget (you might want to sit down for this) is $150.
