Breaking In Your Shoes

February 20th, 2007 @ 11:27 am by Mrs. Hibiscus

My inexpensive yet really cute David’s Bridal shoes came in this week. I love them! Here are some pictures:

Okay, so that’s actually not the point to my post. What I really wanted to share was I tried walking around with them on my hardwood floor and almost fell flat on my face. Hmm….it seems I will have to “break them in” and add traction somehow. This article on About.com suggests adding self-adhesive sole pads onto the bottom of wedding shoes or using sandpaper to add traction. I’m not sure I’ve heard of brides doing either method. However, I will try wearing them around the house so they don’t hurt my feet too much on the wedding day. Haha that will be fun. I’m still now sure how I’m going to prevent from slipping. How are you breaking in your wedding shoes (both for comfort and so you don’t fall on your butt on your wedding day)?

I remember getting non skid pads at payless for a few formal functions. They work well and are inexpensive.

Just walk around in them. That’ll scuff up the bottoms and add traction.

I have the same problem. My friend says to brush the bottoms across brick.

try hairspray… adds tackiness but be careful of the material!

Those are so cute! My quick fix is to deliberately scuff the bottoms on asphalt–while wearing them, run the balls of your feet back and forth over an asphalt surface. Works every time!

I’ve always scraped shoes up with coarse sandpaper, though I’m sure the asphalt or brick mentioned above would do the job as well :-)

It always kind of hurts me, though, taking beautiful shoes and deliberately scuffing up the bottoms! Why don’t the designers just make shoe bottoms with a little bit of built-in traction or texture?

Love your shoes, btw!

I just wore mine outside for a few blocks. The sidewalk works in scuffing them up. Just try and scratch the bottom. Sandpaper does the trick to if you are afraid of getting them dirty. I also wore them around my apartment with athletic socks on (sexy!) to get them to widen a little.

i do the same as bridget, i run my feet back and forth in the parking lot to scuff them! :)

ohhh those are really cute! if you don’t mind me asking, how much were they?

and as for the soles… if you do decide on the sandpaper, make sure you are careful on your own hardwood floors– you don’t want to sand those and damage it in the midst of breaking in your shoes… i think traction pads are the best way to go — probably available at the foot care section of any drugstore or shoe store.

You can take the shoes to any shoemaker/cobbler and have them add non skid rubber to the bottom. They add an extra layer of cushion to absorb the shock, and you wont “skid.” I do it with ALL of my shoes!

haha - yes, i wear new shoes with tubes socks on inside the house… and i usually buy those adhesive grips to stick on the bottom of the shoe…but i’m sure walking around outside will accomplish the same thing.

the shoes are cute!! :D

I agree with everyone else. scuff up the bottom. Gisele was on one of those early morning shows once, and she says that all the models scuff up the bottoms of their shoes, so that they don’t slip on the runway (she took a razor blade to the bottoms of her shoes, but brick/asphalt sound better!)

I finally, after an incredible amount of shopping, web-searching, second-guessing, polling my friends, family, and internet acquaintances, ordered my wedding shoes today! Yay! This low-heeled ivory beauty:

When they come in, I’ll probably sandpaper up the bottom because I’m afraid of mussing them up outside. In the past I’ve scored up the soles of new shoes with scissors or a knife. I’ll see how comfy they are, and then maybe put in Foot Petals. But roughing up the soles is the important thing–I really don’t want to slip and fall on my satin-covered butt on my wedding day!

those would be gorgeous dyed into a red or deep blue or even green after the wedding!

you can even get the sole resoled with something that has more traction. it costs around $25 in nyc, but you could prolly find it cheaper in the la/oc area. :)

They were $55 with tax I believe. Much cheaper than I originally planned but I couldn’t justify spending more when I liked these so much.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’m just scared how they’ll look for pictures if I scuff them up. I’m dorky..I know.

Mrs. Bee: I want to dye them red or black after the wedding…I haven’t decided yet! :)

Nony Mouse

You don’t scuff them where it will show in pictures. Take them in hand, go outside and find a curb, and scuff the bottom of the central area on the ball of the foot. The outside edges will still be pretty, but you can keep your balance in them.
