Beehive

February 21st, 2007 @ 3:28 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • mango wants to know if anyone is selling a vwidon dress. She loves their designs but it’s out of her price range.
  • Miss Emerald is looking for a brand of stamp ink that doesnt’ smudge on vellum. She’s tried Enfore and Versacolor and they smudged even after a night of drying.
  • Joyful wants to know the protocol for paying for bridesmaid dresses and accessories. Both times she’s been a bridesmaid she’s paid for her own dress and the bride provided the jewelry.
  • Aliya is going for her reception food tasting this Sunday. Any tips or questions we should be asking the chef?
  • JW is Chinese marrying a Korean and they want to incorporate both cultural ceremonies. For those of you who had either or both, how long did it take to change and complete and at what point in the reception did you do this?
  • ot is DIY’ing her invites and needs advice on pocketfold invitations vs. inner/outer envelopes. She also wants to use dark brown envelopes - is that a no-no for a mid-May wedding? Her invites are being printed on ivory cardstock w/ sage green and brown ink.
  • seattleaug11 wants to know how to word her diy RSVP’s so that her guests know how many/who’s invited.
  • Beta is looking for a recommendation for a citrus based perfume.

Joyful, the one time I was BM, I have always bought my own dress. However, the bride did help us in cutting costs down by choosing an inexpensive dress and doing the alterations herself.

For my wedding, I only have my MOH, who I told to wear any black dress she wanted. I am buying a pashmina in apple green so there is a splash of color.

Just make sure your BMs are aware of the costs upfront. I think every situation is different. I would love to buy her dress, but it is just not feasible. I tried to do the next best thing in giving her flexibility on price and style, so hopefully she can wear it again.

for the beehive - im chinese marrying a korean. we want to incorporate both the hanbok and the chinese tea ceremony during the reception. for those of you who had either of these (or both!), how long did each take to change and complete, and at what point of the reception did you do this?

Joyful,
When I was MOH for my sister, I bought my own dress. For some reason traditions are a little different in Hawaii - the bride and groom normally pay for the bridal party’s attire while on the Mainland, the bridal party pays for their own. I think you should just take costs into consideration for everyone and choose accordingly. Don’t feel that you have to pay for everything if you can’t.

Miss Emerald,
I just looked at the knottie bio of the week and she had fantastic vellum envelopes that were printed. Maybe you could shoot an emai?

JW - we did a korean ceremony. we changed into our traditional attire during the cocktail hour and did it right at the beginning of the reception. the salad was served while we went to change back into our wedding attire, and then we came out to do our first dance.

i have a friend who did two cultural ceremonies during the reception and it was a lot. if you could do one of them another day or earlier in the day, i think that’d be a lot easier on you.

we had a very short 10-15 minute ceremony, because we had a 20 minute korean ceremony. you can tailor the korean ceremony based on how much time you have, how many relatives you have, etc.

if you want to do both during the reception tho, you could do one during the cocktail hour, and another at some point during your reception. it’ll be a lot of attire changes which is actually much more time consuming than you’d think.

i hope that helps! feel free to ask any more specific questions!

JW - I’m Chinese and my FI is Jewish. We are doing a modified Jewish ceremony for our “day-of” festivities, but I really wanted to incorporate a tea ceremony, so we decided to do our rehearsal dinner Chinese banquet-style (only immediate families, wedding party, and significant others are invited).

We will be doing the tea ceremony after our rehearsal for the Jewish ceremony, but before we all sit down to the rehearsal dinner. It’s sort of like having an Asian wedding day first and then a Western wedding day, and I don’t feel like that makes the Asian ceremonies less significant. Our goal was to make the Chinese ceremony more intimate so that its meaning was more personal for those involved.

for the beehive - I’m going down the DIY route for invitations and I’d appreciate any advice on doing pocketfold invitations vs. an inner envelope stuffed inside the outer envelope. And I really would like to use dark brown as the color of the envelope, is this a no-no for a mid-May wedding in NJ? My invitations will be printed on an ivory cardstock with sage green and brown ink.

For the beehive: I need advice on my DIY invites RSVP card. I need to get a head count of guest and I want to put a line on the RSVP for people to tell me exactly how many they are bringing. I already plan on writing the names on the inner envelope but some may not pay attention to etiquette and will still bring a date or kids. Any suggestions???

Miss Blueberry

miss Emerald–I ended up having the same problem (only mine was due to metallic ink) and tried using a bit of aerosol hairspray (Aquanet!) on each card–this helped solidify the ink! Just a thought, if you don’t feel like buying more ink :-)

seattleaug11–why don’t you put a line of “___ of ___ will attend” and then one of “___send regrets” This way *you* can fill in the second ___ yourself, with how many people are invited…so one couple’s invite might read “___ of _2_ will attend”. People will still be thick-headed and cross out your number and substitute their own, but that should make it more clear :-)

joyful - sometimes it’s cultural and the bride pays for everything. i paid for my maid’s dresses and let them wear whatever shoes they wanted (since the dress was floor-length).

most commonly tho, bms pay for their own dresses. it’d be nice if you could talk to them to see what budget they’re all comfortable with, and if you could provide the acccessories that’d be really nice as well.

ot - it’s just a matter of personal preference. and there really aren’t any hard and fast color rules anymore when it comes to weddings. you’ll be fine with a brown envelope in may.

seattleaug11 - you can say ____ of ____ (fill in number) seats will attend, or something along those lines on your rsvp cards, so they know exactly how many people are invited.

Inspired by Miss Apple’s comment on perfume a couple days ago, I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a citrus based perfume? I’ve been wanting one for awhile, but haven’t found the time to explore any perfume counters and find a great one.

Beta, I love Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom. I think all of her perfumes are citrusy/fruity.

seattle, i agree with miss blueberry ~ actually that’s what we had printed for our RSVPs. i am planning to use the inner envelopes to actually name those invited, but just in case, we’ll be filling in the second part of ___ of ____ will attend. hopefully, they’ll take the ‘hint’

I do not know where all you can get it but London based Jo Malone (Sacs carries it). She has several heavenly scents.
French lime blossom:The scent of sweet lime blossoms with a twist of bergamot and tarragon is evocative of the first day of spring.
And my favorite; Lime Basil and Mandarin!
