Doing Dishes

February 21st, 2007 @ 12:26 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

Mr. Bluebell and I did the dishes together last night, in our own particular way. We have long had the agreement that, if one of us cooks, the other one does the dishes. But if neither one of us cooks or we both pitch in, we always fall into the same pattern: I unload the clean dishwasher, and he rinses the dirty dishes and loads them in.

This has always worked well for us as we each prefer our task to the other one, which I think is very indicative of our general personalities. I asked him once why he doesn’t like unloading the dishwasher, and he said because it was annoying to have to take all the mixed up dishes and sort them out into their own appropriate compartment.

However, this is what I like about unloading the dishwasher! You get to make some sense out of the jumble, and then you have the promise of all those nice clean dishes eagerly awaiting future use. That’s why I find loading up the dishwasher depressing - you get your hands all dirty and they just go into a temporary holding cell (the dishwasher), so you don’t get to the step with that final satisfaction. But, when it comes to final satisfaction, Mr. Bluebell thinks it’s much better when you put the dishes in the dishwasher - because then you know they’ll soon undergo a magical transformation, whereas when my clean dishes are sitting in the cabinet, they are already done with the whole cycle and simply awaiting dirtying again.

Admittedly, this is quite off topic, but I just thought it was interesting and wondered how all of you handle who does the dishes between you and your fiance! Do you think that what type of chores you like to do gives any insight into your personality?

maybe women are more naturally inclined to organizing because i’d certainly prefer to put dishes away than to rinse them. we don’t use a dishwasher, but i put the dishes away from the dishrack because mr. bee doesn’t want to mess up my “system.” :)

I hate emptying the dishwasher. It’s really the only thing that I try to get out of, chore-wise, around the apartment. I put the dirty ones in and he empties them. I think it’s mainly that I don’t like all the bending down and reaching up to the top shelves and then having to have all the cabinet doors open.

Actually I don’t really like folding clothes and putting them away either, which is kind of the same thing.

I don’t like putting away dishes either (or clothes for that matter). We currently don’t have a dishwasher (I know, what a shame!), so we have a rule- You Cook, I Clean. I hate cleaning pots and pans, but I dont mind washing dishes and glasses. Because I’m cleaning them, it makes me feel good. My FI loves cleaning the stove, vacuuming, and doing laundry. I love to fold laundry, dust, wash down tables, and dishes. Also, I love cleaning the bathroom, but hate cleaning out the hair trap. He cleans that every morning even though it’s mainly my hair.

we also have the one person cooks, the other person does the dishes rule! altho sometimes when one person is more tired, the other will do both. we don’t use the dishwasher… only as a storage rack. =P

We also don’t have a (working) dishwasher. I swear we live in a slum. ANYWAY, I wash the dishes, mostly put them away, but I HATE it. So sometimes he does it. I sort the clothes for laundry, and he does the laundry. Sometimes he folds, mostly I do, since I know he hates it. We’re terrible because we BOTH hate putting the clothes away, so sometimes it’s left in the basket folded and clean. :) And then we mess them up trying to get something from the bottom. So, basically we try to do what the other hates, he vacuums and cleans the toilets, I do the kitchen.

I load, unload and run the dishwasher. He washes the “handwashables” such as wine glasses, the blender and pots & pans. We both do laundry but I do most of the folding because he’s a boy and always folds clothes really badly and they come out of the drawer wrinkly! He does the dusting and vaccuuming and takes the garbage out. I do the scrubbing and washing chores and clean the bathrooms. I actually end up doing a lot more than him, but he works from home and takes care of the dog all day and she is a HANDFUL (worth every minute of it though, don’t get me wrong!), so it evens itself out quite well.

I HATE unloading the dishwasher too. I think it’s like someone else said - I hate the bending down and going up of putting them away - I’m short so it sucks. My boyfriend doesn’t mind putting the dishes away though, and I don’t mind putting them in there! That’s funny we’re opposites. :)

We go by he feeds the cats & takes care of the litter box, so I do dishes, but he dries, unless I skip a night, then it’s all on me. LOL
I hate my job.. but hate the smell of cat food too! I just can’t win.
I do laundry and put it away, and I love that job.
