Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Topping It Off

February 22nd, 2007 @ 5:22 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

I thought I had decided on what to top our cake with, but I guess I was wrong. Actually, while I still love what I initially chose, I think I want something different.

This was our original cake topper:

Ours is an all red version, with ladybugs instead of bees, but you get the idea. Now it is totally irrelevant to our wedding theme and colors, and would just look weird. Of course, this has been in the back of my mind for ages, and it took one small thing to make me really want to change it: I found something else.

While doing research about cake toppers, I noticed a lot of the brides nowadays are doing the monogram/initial thing on the top of their wedding cakes. Far be it from me to actually be original and do something else!

When I was at Michael’s this past weekend, I couldn’t refrain from loitering around the wood crafts section. My dad, while being distracted by the “super cool birdhouses,” thought my idea of initials was “okay.” So going on his opinion, I snapped up a few: a 3″ A, a 5″ F, and a 3″ P. It was pretty cheap - about 3 to 4 dollars for the three of them.

They look somewhat like this letter A, just with less flourish (this one is from Craftcuts.com):

I love the letters because for some reason, the monogram has been one of my favorite things! The only problem? I have no idea how to decorate them. Like Miss Strawberry’s decorated cardboard ones, I want pretty letters too!

I was so tired of shopping at Michael’s that I ended up just glancing at the decorating stuff and left. So, now I’m not sure what to do. Do you paint them? Decoupage? Staple? Glue? Stickers? Ribbons? Crayon?

I’m asking my fellow Bees, and all in the hive: What should I do? Our wedding is a fall theme, with rust, gold, and ivory colors. Help me!

decoupage! torn pages from old french novels, antique copies of mozart sheet music, torn bits of your invitation, paper hearts in your colors, wrapping paper or napkins in your colors, or paper doilies. i love decoupage.

if the cake is colorful & fancy, perhaps be more simple in the design, but if the cake is more monotone, go wild! perhaps the surname initial in rust colors, and the others with a more ivory theme, and each with some specks of gold flaking?

hope you don’t mind the ideas. :)

cover the letters with tiny leaves in those colors, shingle-style.

i like the decoupage idea too - maybe pictures of you and the groom? just make sure that you use food-safe paint or other decorations since it will touch your top tier. or, you can glue it to a food-safe base to sit on top of the tier.

Thanks for all the ideas, guys! Jen, I was going to ask if I should do the base- I think it would make more sense than just sticking the letters in the cake! :)

Also, guess I should learn how to decoupage!
