Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

Here’s The Truth…

February 24th, 2007 @ 8:19 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

I’m going to tell you all something that only me, Mr. Kiwi, and my mom know…

I’m a size 24 wedding gown bride. Okay, I’ve said it.

This is me with the dog. I’ve posted it before, but I thought this might help with your mental image.

Here's The Truth... : wedding los angeles wedding dress Glasses3.jpg

Part of why I was so afraid of wedding dress shopping, was fear of what size I am. After gaining so much weight, I’ve been size blind - all self-imposed, of course. I thought maybe I’d be a 16 or 18, but when measured, I’m a 24 using my biggest measurement- my waist.

As distraught as I was about finding a dress in my size, nowadays “fun sized” (as I like to call myself) women can easily find a dress.

David’s Bridal carries the David’s Woman line, available in 14w to 26w. I don’t really know what the “w” means, but I hope it isn’t “wide.”

Casablanca Bridal (my dress company) also carries up to 24 (oh my god, I just realized I’m the last size), and has a variety of modification choices (sleeves, length, train).

Watters and Watters carries up to a 24 as well.

Jasmine Bridal has up to 28W, and they have a ton of modification choices, too!

These are all just samples of places you can find dresses in varying sizes, and take it from me, it isn’t that bad. Sure, it’s not the best thing to be told you’re a bigger size than you thought you were- but you’ll have a gown made for you, in your size.

It seems most of these gowns in larger sizes will cost you a nominal fee above than the “regular” dresses. Although I understand the reasoning (to an extent) of having to use more fabric for my dress, I think the fact that I had to order a size 24 wedding dress (at five feet tall, no less) should be enough of a “payment.” :P

Anyway, that’s all I’m going to say about this, but I leave some parting words: no matter what size you are, how much you pay for something, and how afraid you are of looking stupid… your fiance will think you are the most perfect woman he has ever seen.

I was curious what the difference between say your jean size and your wedding size is, because I’m absolutely terrified of going to look at dresses after hearing that wedding gowns run small? Only answer if your comfortable, and I applaud you for “coming out”, it is something I struggle with as well.

Amen to that! I myself am a 24, so I know how you are feeling, and I’m not even wedding dress shopping yet! Glad to see a little diversity, with the bigger gals here, too! :)

my wedding dress was 4-6 sizes larger than my street size, so don’t let the number get to you miss kiwi. i’m sure you will look beautiful on your wedding day no matter what!

Congrats on “coming out,” Miss Kiwi :) I know the struggles you mention as well…dress shopping wasn’t the most pleasant experience for me as a plus sized bride, either! I’m currently trying to lose weight, not for the wedding or Mr. Pearl, but for myself. Like you said though, he thinks I’m beautiful no matter what. And really, so do I :)

I’m really glad you’re not letting this stupid # that they call size bring you down. Because it really isn’t anything but a #. You’ll be a beautiful bride. :)

Hey everyone!! Robyn, I go back and forth in jean sizes, sometimes I’m a 12, sometimes a 14, sometimes a 16, so I dunno! I wish I could tell you what my “real” size is!

I was afraid of the same thing because I know that over the last several years, I have put on a significant amount of weight. I got my dress from David’s Bridal (I think the “w” stands for “woman, by the way) and was pleasantly surprised that I only required a size larger than my usual one. I told myself that the most important thing isn’t the number on my dress; it’s the fact that I’m getting married to my best friend and man of my dreams, and I’m happy with myself. I may start calling myself “fun sized!” :)

You are so brave for posting this! Mine is a size 20. I had the same reservations you did. Eh. I normally wear a 12-14. It sucks. I’m going to rip the label out when I get the dress. :)

Well, you’re definitely not alone! I got measured for my dress–I think I was a 24 also–and since I am “in proportion” and they go with the bust, up to the woman’s size for me! But hey, we’ll all look great. :-) And, I am working my ass off to lose a size or two??? We’ll see how that goes. :-)

All the brides i’ve seen…who “dress to their right size” (i.e. not trying to wear something that they shouldn’t be wearing..whether big or small) all look bee-you-t-full

And you will be no exceptioN! Congrats on finding a wedding dress that fits you Miss Kiwi!

i am really glad you wrote this post! PS i really like your personal writing style, and i hope you don’t change how you write posts for weddingbee just because some people don’t prefer reading day-to-day stuff. honestly, you’re one of the few weddingbee brides i can easily distinguish right now because you show so much of your personality on weddingbee. weddingbee is a great resource for actual wedding things, but i read and love it because of all the contributors that make up the heart of it! thanks for doing such a great job!

As if shopping for clothes isn’t daunting enough for those of us in the real world who don’t wear a size zero! Why on earth would bridal gowns show numbers that are 4-6 digits higher than normal everyday wear? I can fluctuate between an 8-12 depending on the time of year. I’d hate to go into a bridal shop and have to try on a size 20! I don’t mean to say that in a derogatory way, so please don’t take offense. Just think of how different it would be if that 4-6 digits swung in the other direction! A 12 could be a 6 or 8 in the bridalworld! After all, shouldn’t this be the day when you feel most beautiful?

Whatever, it’s just goes to show that sizing is really about arbitrary numbers. Go with what looks best on you, enhances your assets and hides whatever flaws you may feel you have. If you feel beautiful on that day then it will come through no matter what some silly number on a tag says!

I’m really glad my dress just came in small, medium, large and extra large. I was quite proud of being a large.

I think you’re beautiful and will find something you look stunning in.

If the process is too frustrating you might look into a local designer; prices vary but some aren’t bad [PIB- she has a studio in LA too] or even think about having one made. Depending on the seamstress you find it can be much cheaper. Your local knot board probably has suggestions.

Were you able to try on dresses in your size, Miss Kiwi? Or were you forced to hang size 10 dresses over your shoulders and “imagine what this will look like when it closes?” as I was told?
I can stand the numbers of the sizing (a “24″ sounds young & swinging, right? Who wants to be an “8″ on their wedding day?), but I couldn’t stand having to guess what it would look like on me, it was too hard and too frustrating.

kudos to this post! My fiance keeps on telling me that size doesn’t matter…hhaha…and i’m only a 0/1 in street clothes. Blame it on the environment that I am in.

I’m normally a size 14, although I’ve gained some weight recently and my jeans are a bit tight. The part that I found particularly annoying about shopping for a wedding gown was that plus sizes cost more money! My gown is a Casablanca too, and I tried on two of their gowns–not mine, but similar–in a size 18 and a size 16. The 16 was a bit tight, but it zipped. The 18 was quite big, it flopped over my boobs, which I found amusing as I’m a 38DD. But the annoying part? The 18 was a “plus size” and cost $100 more! Guess which size I ordered? The salon ladies were very against it, and I can see their point, that if I put on more weight the 16 won’t fit at all, but the 18 could always be altered to fit, which of course gives them more money, too But I lost 125lbs a few years ago, and have kept nearly all of it off (although I’ve been up and down the same last 15 pounds since I stopped dieting.) I’ve been ill lately and unable to run so losing the weight hasn’t happened yet, but it WILL happen before the wedding. Ten pounds and the gown will fit like a dream. Nerts to you, salon ladies! I actually had to sign a waiver saying that I was ordering the 16 against their advice, but I’m sure they get a lot of hysterical brides who don’t fit into their small dresses. But that $100 was a big deal to me, I did a lot of shopping around to find the best deal on my gown, and it also meant another several hundred in alterations. I’m hoping to wear my gown with no alterations.

Anyway, point being, the number on your gown’s tag isn’t the important thing, what’s important is how you feel in the gown. When you feel beautiful, you will look it. And Casablanca has beautiful gowns!

I wholeheartedly concur! I am a size 18 bride and I had a horrible time shopping for a wedding dress. What should have been fun and exciting was uncomfortable and embarrasing and it was made that way by how I was treated by the sales people in stores. They completely ignored me and it was so frustrating to be in a dressing room and hear them gushing over the smaller girls in the room next to me. But, I found a beautiful dress that flatters me in all the right places and I am going to look beautiful to everyone who knows and loves me. On a side note - I am a size 18 or 20 in street clothes and my dress is an 18 so I think it just depends on the designer and the shape of the dress. The overall point is that it doesn’t matter! Just go with what feels right.

You know, I’m a size 24 in jeans at 5′2″ and I was shocked to find that Alfred Angelo’s line fit me great at a size 22.

Also, they don’t change extra for the larger sizes and have about 12-14 styles to try on which include a lot of the popular styles”

http://www.alfredangelo.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/collections.displayCollection/categoryID/1af402e9-205f-4b7b-9d22-6fec77b3d187

Anywho, they also have three lengths, which they do charge a $50 additional fee for Tall or Short, but it was well worth the experience.

The biggest issue I have with dresses for larger sizes is the attitude many places have where they don’t allow you to try on the dress because they don’t have it, but they can “drape” it on you so you can “get a good idea” of what it will look like then order it… um RIGHT. No thanks, I want to know how it will feel!

So yeah, thanks for the info and the awareness being brought to the forefront!
