The Importance Of Matching Bands

February 24th, 2007 @ 5:28 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

Nearly 30 years ago when my parents got married, matching wedding bands were de rigeur. Theirs are very similar to each other–simple, brushed white gold–though my mom’s is much narrower than my dad’s.

Mr. Blueberry’s and my bands, however, could hardly be more different.

Night and day, eh?

So that makes me wonder - do fewer couples choose matching bands today than they did 30 years ago? I wonder why that might be the case… increased variety? Couples meeting their individual rather than joint tastes? Or maybe it’s just how the trend goes.

Do you and your FI/DH's wedding bands match/coordinate?

What a great day to post this question (we just designed and ordered my engagement ring and wedding band this morning), but I couldn’t figure out how to answer the survey.

Our wedding bands do not match, at all, but they do coordinate. His band, as designed, is white gold with a deep purple enamel. My engagement ring is white gold with a trillian-cut grape garnet as the center stone, and the band has five channel set princess cut grape garnets.

It was important to us to match the colors and metals (white gold, shiny finish, but no rhodium coating), but our styles are different enough that we didn’t want the rings to be identical. They reflect our personalities, as well as our decision to walk the same path the rest of our lives. I coudn’t be happier with them - now if only the results fit our designs!

Miss Blueberry– I forget where you found your rings, but I love both of yours! Where did you order them from?

cubangirl–my band came from http://www.bestgem.com, and we had a *wonderful* experience with them!!! I believe the girl who helped us was named Lisa, and she was available every step of the way :-)

Mr B’s came from a local jewelry store, but only after we found it on http://www.e-weddingbands.com, printed out a pic of the ring, and asked them if they carried the same thing. But I’ve heard other people say great things about e-weddingbands, so I’m sure if you end up ordering through them you’ll have a great experience!

hth!

wow. this is a great poll.

it is super important to us that our rings be identical (except for size and width.) in our minds, the rings are like our team jackets or wonder-twin power rings or something else that identifies us as being together so of course they should be the same. i didn’t realize i was so in the minority! fascinating.

it is true that the band i’m getting comes in a version with little diamonds in it which is super nice but matching bands is way more important to me.

like paula and her fiance, our rings coordinate but do not “match”. my FI is a silver guy, and i am a gold girl, but it was important to us that our rings be made of the same metal. i always assumed that my engagement ring would be make of platinum or white gold, and that would have been fine. but much to my surprise and delight he proposed with a (yellow) gold ring!

we’ve picked out our rings, but haven’t purchased them yet. if any of you are in the san francisco area, check out the jewelry mart and/or the gift center. the wholesale prices and the selection can’t be beat!

We’re a little odd, I guess. I’m only having the one ring. He wears an engagement ring, but will have a seperate wedding ring. Another (male) friend that did this coordinated his bands and wears them stacked, but mr mouse will just switch them, I think. My ring doesn’t match his e-ring, but we’re going to see if we can get his wedding band engraved with a pattern that reflects the design on mine.

I don’t think it’s all that important, but I guess we’ve spend a bit of time searching.

My wedding band is just a VERY simple 2mm white gold band. I’m such a simple girl! My fiance’s band is way more ornate. His is two tone, gold/white gold. The inner part is white gold and it is engraved with a paisley like pattern. He loves it!

Our wedding bands match perfectly even in size. I did not want a diamond of any sort, just not that kinda girl. I am still a tomboy at heart, and should not be trusted with dainty things. My husband and I both had matching engagement rings, and he still wears his on his right hand. It seemed only natural to us for us to have matching wedding bands. Heck on our wedding day we wore matching yellow polo shirts. Very plain and simple, just focused on our committment to each other that day. We did not spend months planning the day, but our life together. We have tungsten carbide rings because we both love biking and don’t want to tear them up.
