About Mrs. Strawberry

I’m Lazy. Real Lazy.

February 25th, 2007 @ 2:13 pm by Mrs. Strawberry

I’m not quite sure how one goes about changing their name. I’m sure it’s rather cheap, but involves a lot of paper work. And errand running and or phone calls to get said paper work. I’m lazy. I don’t want to do that. I saw this on the Knot today and am seriously considering buying it.

z770781
Normally $30, it’s on sale for $20.99. Includes everything needed to change your surname, including official forms for Social Security, IRS, DMV, voting, and passport — plus 14 pages of instructions and a thorough name-change checklist. CD includes form letters to send to banks, doctors, credit card and insurance companies, and more!”

Waste of money? Quite possibly. But for a lazy bum like me, it’s perfect. :)

that’s cool. that’s the main reason i don’t want to change my surname. it was first…”but i like my name”…then it was it’s such a pain to run around to do passport, license, etc. i guess it did come down to …i’m just lazy. i wonder if you can share that kit with others…so i don’t have to spend the $. i guess i’m lazy and cheap! hehe

Seriously?? You’ve got to be kidding. Probably the biggest waste of money. It takes two seconds to download forms from the Social Security office, and DMV. Yes, you have to go to these places, but thats un-avoidable. Just go through all of your bills, and call the companies. Its not hard, but hey its your $$$.

you dont need that!
its a pain, but its not hard to download/get some forms from ss and dmv. calling banks to change your name on your cards is easy too. save ur money for something else! :)

A friend of mine recently married and changed her name - needless to say she is now back to her ‘maiden name’ - lol.

Please don’t buy that, if no one buys that they’ll stop selling crap like that you can get for free. It’s probably just going to tell you where to go download the right forms, unless it includes the forms for every state. Seriously, someone on weddingbee should make a guide for the state they live in, eventually you guys can have a guide for each state for FREE.

I don’t even see how that works since the forms for state court would be different in each court. And, as others have said, most forms for government things are easy. Just make sure you get enough certified copies of the name change certificate from the court so you don’t have to keep going back to get more.

It’s really easy to do name change forms yourself– if you can blog, then I’m sure you’re smart enough to figure out the forms :-)

As for form letters:

I have a question regarding name changes… our honeymoon is in europe, so if I have a marriage license with my husband’s name… but my passport is my maiden name… is that ok???

*worrying*

I kinda wanted to wait after everything died down before I actually changed my name too.

Carol, you should sign your marriage certificate with your maiden name, as it is still your legal name at the time of signing. If you’re worried about possible problems, pack a copy of your marriage certificate.

I think, Lily, the point is you’ll still have to go to the offices with the forms, make the phone calls, mail the letters, and occasionally track down the correct form anyways. So the $ you’re out saves you almost no time. And most of those kits are only full of free forms anyway. It’s like getting the free moving packets at the post office, taking out the coupons, and charging $20 bucks for them. Any time you buy into a scam it allows them to stay in business that much longer.

There’s some information about name changes and other practical tasks that come with marriage at ConsciousBride, the website is here:

Miss Strawberry …. you are truly our favorite bee. As for being lazy … please I am considering paying $175 for someone to handle all of this for me. My name change situation is a little different because I am marrying my partner .. so it won’t be a “legal” marriage name change. Anyway, sometimes it’s just worth it - to not have the extra stress..

since i did much of the wedding planning and scouring the web for wedding stuff… i made a deal with my husband that he would research all the forms i would need to change my last name to his. he got all the forms and instructions and he did a great job! you can save the money and get your new hubby to still contribute after the wedding.. cuz really the “wedding stuff” is not over until you send the thank yous, get your wedding album printed and change your last name! :)

Melodious: I’m I assuming correctly that by the time you will have left for your honeymoon you will not have changed your name? Then all you are is you, married, with no change in name. If your airline ticket and your passport have the same name you shouldn’t run into problems. But I’d bring a copy of your marriage license anyway — in case something happens abroad there is no question you are the wife. I brought a copy when we went to Italy fearing that one of us would get into a freak accident and one of us wouldn’t be able to see the other in the hospital without it.

melodius - unless you’re taking off for your honeymoon weeks later, don’t change your name or anything until after you get back home. Your ticket is bought in your maiden name, your passport is in your maiden name, and you will still have your maiden name. Wait till you get home.
