Mrs. Apple's Picture
Mrs. Apple, Dallas Age and Occupation in '07: 28, Entrepreneur Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Police Officer Engagement Date: Easter Day 2006 Wedding Date: May 27, 2007 Blogging Since: September 28, 2006 Venue: Marie Gabrielle Restaurant & Gardens About Me: I'm in the midst of trying to plan a "perfectly beautiful" wedding and decorating my new home. It's been exhausting but totally worth every minute of it. Ironically, I was never the type of person to want to get married but now that I'm engaged, I get giddy over anything that is wedding related! I'll try my best to give you all unique and practical ideas.
About Mrs. Apple

In last week’s “Reader Feedback” post, one of the weddingbee readers commented on how we should have a “Mrs.” come back and blog about wedding do’s and dont’s. This was a great suggestion.

Awhile back I actually emailed a few of the weddingbee bugs about that very same question. They all gave me sound advice. Advice that I desperately needed at the time because I was struggling so much with what I should and should not purchase. They also all agreed that though the little details are cute, the very most important part is to just enjoy and keep it fun during the entire planning process and on the day of our wedding.

I really needed them to tell me that via world wide web. I was just so confused. Though Mr. Apple, friends, and family tell me everyday to not spend so much on “unneccessary” wedding purchases, I don’t listen. I am one stubborn horse. I needed someone who had a recent wedding and not one a decade ago (ie family members) so I could relate better to them.

So, with only three months left - I’m a bit sad that Weddingbee for me is almost over, but so excited to be Mrs. Apple. Here are some tips that I’ve learned along the way. Hopefully this will help some of you currently confused brides. :)

1) Take your time with selecting vendors - don’t make impulse decisions, you have more time than you think.

2) Leave one day out of the week to spend time with your sig-o. When I start a project, I tend to forget people. I forgot Mr. Apple for awhile and we quickly noticed the distance.

3) Use cash as much as possible when paying vendors or making purchases. I’ve accumulated a high credit card debt that hopefully will be paid off by our cash wedding gifts.

4) Get to know your in laws better by getting them involved in the wedding planning. Though my in laws are far away, I email them my wedding dress photo, brooches, hair trials, etc. They love it.

5) Be direct and stern with your vendors (not mean). Don’t expect anything less than what you paid for. If people think you’re being too bossy or a control freak - who cares, it’s called service.

6) Take photos of everything - dress shopping, dress fittings, visits to jewelers for band selection, etc. I keep my camera with me all of the time. I also have a terrible memory so when I refer back to old photos, it’s so nostalgic even if it’s just the most random of places!

Any brides who are not yet quite a Mrs. or even a newly named Mrs, please add on to the list to help our soon to be brides!

I have just over three months myself, and I’m at a point now where I’m trying to decide what to buy, and my fiance is beginning to wonder about the amount of money being spent. I don’t blame him, as I can be a little, uh, spendthrifty. :) One thing I can’t decide on is an aisle runner. I don’t want a cheap one, because, well, it would look cheap. Are they worth it, or are they a waste of $100 or so? We’re either going to be married on a brick terrace or inside in the ballroom. Do they just get rucked up anyway, or are they a really nice touch?

Ditto Ms. Apple about invovling the in-laws. Even though I do not have a very close relationship with my FMIL, I have tried to get her invovled. I emailed her pictures of me in my dress, I sent her our wedding coordinator’s website link so that she could get an idea of what we are doing, and I am going with her to help her choose her outfit for the wedding. She does not have a daughter, and she said she loves receiving the emails from me that include wedding details.

Isn’t it usually better to pay with credit card (in case of fraud with the vendor) and/or for points (airline, etc.)? J guess it depends on the circumstances.

Pencils - hmm…I would say it depends on your venue. If you have a beautiful venue that doesn’t need one - go without but since you might be having a ballroom wedding, i’d go with maybe a DIY one? They do get pretty expensive so maybe you can try loose petals route also. Ask your venue if they provide one. Our venue is offering an aisle runner with no charge. Its a mossy green carpet (not very pretty) but we’ll be covering it up with loose petals so the it won’t be so obvious.

Sue - for me, i’ve accumulated so much cc debt (though its 0% APR) this year. I’ve had to rush to pay it off since the end year is approaching. I would suggest on large purchases to go the cc route but for smaller priced items such as my payless shoe store shoes to pay with cash. Especially since its not purchased online and in my local area, I can just present them with a recipt and that will be just as good. The smaller priced items will add up on your cc.

while it’s good to use the cash to pay if you have it… but it also might be a good idea to pay with credit card with the intention of paying off those bill monthly… we got a nice little surprise since we have a cash-back credit card. i’ve never seen so much cash back cuz usually i don’t spend thousands on purchases! it’s nice to get paid to spend!

We use a credit card that gets travel points. Fiance and I spent a week at a hotel in Egypt recently using the points we’ve accumulated so far. Once we’re done with all the wedding costs we’ll have enough points to stay at a luxury hotel for a week or so. That could easily be someone’s honeymoon.

I think using a credit card is good as long as you have the money to pay it off. Obviously going into debt to pay for a wedding is unadvisable no matter what.

CC is also good b/c if you have a vendor that doesn’t deliver you can always dispute the charge.

I agree with everything except #3.

Here is my advice:
1) Set a budget that is realistic to what you (and whoever is funding the wedding) can afford. Then, most important, STICK TO IT!!
2) Comparison shop! Don’t just buy the first thing you see. I often hear people say they purchased something on ebay. Then, I go google that same thing and I can find it much cheaper elsewhere.

These two pieces of advice definitely help combat getting in over your heads with a credit card. I also agree with prior comments about paying the bill off every month. I also have received a lot of credit card rewards from wedding purchases. It’s also great to have the option to dispute a charge!

I agree that the credit card is preferable for big purchases. You’ve got a record of your payment, the ability to dispute the charge, etc.

If you can’t afford the purchase, you’re in trouble no matter how you bought it and probably shouldn’t have in the first place.

Linnybride-weddings in general are expensive and are costly unless you plan to just go to the courthouse. I think the main point I was trying to make on #3 was to pay smaller priced options like flower girl shoes (15 dollars), bridesmaid gifts like totes from old navy and such are better to be paid by cash. The interest charges you pay is still money you’re giving away even though its points earned. Trust me, I’ve got an AA card that racks up mileage but you have to spend so much to get the points. I’d prefer to use my cc cards on larger purchases instead of a couple of dollars here and there. That just seems the most logical to me. Spend those extra dollars by using cash and you won’t have to worry about a balance.
