Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

Now I Want Toast

February 26th, 2007 @ 5:00 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Somewhat along the lines of Miss Blueberry’s LoTR post, I thought I’d blog about our toasting flutes. While we are not a LoTR couple, we (mostly me) are fans of Renaissance Faires. My mother and aunt have been going since I was a child, spending the weekend there for food, fun, and shopping. Only in recent years have Mr. Kiwi and I joined them- even though he only goes for the food.

My aunt has made a tradition in our family - those who get married get a pair of toasting flutes from the Renaissance Faire. Now, before this brings to mind garish goblets with dragons and elves (yes, there are those, too), I’m hoping to get some tasteful ones.

No matter how hard I’ve tried to finagle my aunt into not getting them, she insisted. I already have a pair of lovely gold and deep red goblets from my cousin Karen (which I will still be using btw).

So, I set about finding a pair of glasses that wouldn’t offend my gentle eyes. The glasses will be coming from The Fellowship Foundry, but at the faire itself, not online. These were found on their website:

Dolphin lovers rejoice! Found for $125.00. Glass in colors opal, royal blue and sapphire.

flute1

*breathing fire sounds* Dragons ye requested? Also $125.00, in green, opal, purple, royal blue, ruby, and sapphire.

flute2

This one is supposed to be Maid Marian and Robin Hood. $125.00 iin green, royal blue, opal and sapphire.

flute3

These are peacocks but Mr. Kiwi pointed out that only one peacock has colorful feathers- the males. So, this is a man on man toasting flute. Nothing wrong with that, but I totally wish he didn’t notice (since I like them!). These are $125.00, available in green, royal blue, opal and sapphire.

flute4

This is a quasi-classic flute in the celtic design, a nice smooth heart. $120.00, and in green, opal, purple, ruby and sapphire.

flute5

And finally, these are likely the ones we’ll choose (actually, me, since Mr. Kiwi has decided to “work” the day we go), since we have to choose a pair.

These are the rose heart glasses. $125.00, available in opal, purple and amber (my name!).

flute6

So, while they may not seem very elegant or bridal to a lot of you, I kinda like them. They remind me of my family, and how much they love us and are excited about this wedding. It may seem like I am begrudgingly accepting the offer, but I’m not - they do mean a lot to me, and I can use them as decoration after the wedding!

Where are you getting your toasting flutes? What are you going to do with them after the wedding?

Call me cheap, but this is one area of the wedding where I intend to spend exactly zero dollars and zero cents. I’ll use whatever champagne flutes the venue has on hand. That is, if I bother to drink champagne at all, which is also not decided. I don’t really like champagne!

Besides, ornate glassware is SO not my style. I prefer the sleek, unembellished look, which I’m way more likely to find on standard glassware than specialty toasting flutes. I have other aspects of the wedding I’d rather spend the budget on.

i plan on using the flutes i bought for one of our anniversary dinners. they’re pretty plain but special to me and the bf even picked them out so they’ll be just perfect for our toast.

My parents went to Italy the month after we got engaged and surprised us with some beautiful hand blown toasting flutes. Maybe we’ll get them out and toast on our anniversary each year…

Those are gorgeous, Miss Kiwi! :-) Not my personal style, but I can see the beauty of them all the same. I think it’s really cute of your aunt to have started that tradition for your family. Not only do you get to use them, but you have a wonderful heirloom to keep afterwards. I could imagine it would be quite interesting to see the different flutes that different members of your family have received from your aunt. :-)

For us, the flutes actually aren’t very high of a priority. We’ll be using the ones we received free from attending the Crate and Barrel Sunday Morning Engagements. :-P

Those are quite nice for RenFaire (and SF con) merchandise. I like the rose ones best also. As for us, I don’t drink at all, and my fiance rarely touches alcohol, so we’re not bothering. I’ll be drinking a big old goblet of Diet Coke! Can’t decide if I should get a cake server set, either. I do bake a lot so that would actually get used in the future. Hmmm.

we didn’t use special toasting flutes because it wasn’t important to us. but i think it’s really cool that you’re incorporating a piece of your personality. i’ve only been the the ren faire once, and loved it! esp the fooood! :)

Amen to Laura’s statement. What are you supposed to do with that stuff afterwards? Maybe it’s because I live in an apartment with little storage, but I would so craigslist those if my aunt bought me some.
I’m glad you have such a great family tradition you have share with your fiance,’ I’m a big fan of Ren faire turkey legs myself.

oojoy- We got those toasting flutes too. Mr Mouse said “those look like butts” and now everytime I see them I snort a little.

The nice thing, is regardless of what they look like, when you use them again you’ll remember & get all mushy.

We’re using my grandmother’s cake server, but unfortunately the knife part of the set was lost.

So much to talk about on this one! We got the free toasting flutes from Crate and Barrel’s registry event, ore else we would probably use wine glasses since we’re not serving champagne.

The middle earth stuff is great if you like that theme. My FI is a fight director, so we are using a “cake sword” to cut the cake and I happened to have a cute LOTR little wooden box from working at New Line Cinema, so we’ll use that for the rings. But we’ve tried really hard to keep that stuff to a minimum so it reflects what he does without being ren-fairy.

People expect us to have full sword fights in our ceremony and we’re all nun-unh!
