A funny thing happened to me since last June — I lost interest in the “wedding” — the party, the shoes, the personalized napkins, the I-never- got-around-to-making cocktail menu, the place card “disaster” — and started paying a lot more attention to the marriage.
Suddenly, what are we having for dinner began to trump post-wedding related tasks. My dress didn’t go to the cleaners until December, the thank you notes didn’t get finished until… gulp… last week (!). I still haven’t started dealing with the wedding album, and my last name remains unchanged (although I’m sure my hubby would call this marriage, rather than wedding, related).
I decided to post here to put myself on notice and get my act together. Below is a list of wedding related tasks that remain and that must (must must must) be started in the coming weeks and (hopefully) completed by our one-year anniversary:
1 - Order photos on Shutterfly to make mini-albums for my mom, grandparents and Mr. Firefly’s sister. I have already purchased this Celine Countryman brag book for one of the albums — each page fits a 4×6 print. I might go with something a bit fancier for my mother if I decide to forgo the standard 5×7 white leather parents’ album.
2 - Wedding Album: I am leaning towards Cypress Handmade Albums which is the same company my sister used. Her album is unbelievable, but very pricey. Unfortunately, they will only work with photographers, so I’ll have to contact Leah and ask for her to contact them.
3 - Make copies of my wedding video which I received back in December from Wes Jones. I should have asked him for more copies (he provided 3), but this is no biggie. I just need to have made two more DVDs and one VHS (for my grandparents).
4 - I made a great wedding scrapbook, but now I just need to buy a nice box for things that were too big to fit.
5 - I never posted any reception or honeymoon photos. If you all are still interested, I can post a few of these along with the rest of my reviews (venue, band, dance lessons, etc.).
6 - Change my name… this is actually a little harder for me than simply going over to the social security office since I also want to add a middle name (my nickname). I’ll have to go through NY State’s more formal name-change process (i.e. through the courts).
7 - Have my gorgeous Jimmy Choos fixed up. I walked through gravel in Battery Park and got a heel stuck between the wooden boards at South Street Seaport. There’s supposed to be a great shoe place on 55th on the west side that could, perhaps, salvage these beauties.
My lesson learned? To the extent that you can get things done before or soon after the wedding… take care of it. Or else you’ll have a pile of leftover menu cards and dried flowers on the floor 8 months after the wedding…
