Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

A Prehistoric Good Time

February 27th, 2007 @ 3:36 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Since I haven’t been feeling very well, I haven’t been doing anything related to the wedding. Sorry. :) But, as I was pondering our weekend plans, I thought about my second favorite place in the world: The Los Angeles Natural History Museum. My dad and I used to go every other weekend sometimes - and this was just a few short years ago, not just when I was younger!

When we first got engaged, this was the first place I looked. They have various rooms for use for special events.

This Rotunda, is by far the most beautiful. The fee to rent here is $3,000.00, and this does not include catering, but does include the chairs and tables. Catering is done exclusively by Wolfgang Puck catering.

The coolest room is the Grand Foyer, with the fighting dinosaurs. The cost here is $2,000.00.

Next, we have the north entrance to the museum, which I think would be stunning on a warm summer night. The cost here is $3,000.00, and it has a lovely view of the reflecting pool.

Another possibility would be the African Mammal hall, where you can have your dinner in front of antelopes and elephants. Perhaps a safari theme would work! The cost here is $3,000.00.

You can also rent the North American Mammal hall, which is a little boring to me, with opossums and raccoons watching you eat. :)

If you are flush, you can rent the full museum, both floors for $7,000.00-$10,000.00. You can find a full price list here.

Man, sometimes I wish we were rich, because I would totally have our reception here! And, it’s something that isn’t done that much, from what I’ve seen.

Anyone getting married in an “unusual” place?

Looks like I’m getting married at the top of a mountain! There’s a gondola that carries 100 people that will take us and all our guests up, and a lodge with fine dining restaurants at the top. Best views in the city and a lovely outdoor ceremony spot. I can’t wait.

I also love the idea of the museum though! Too bad my FI hates museums and the one we have here is not a really nice building.

we are getting hitched at the san diego wild animal park (related to san diego zoo, but its full of huge open spaces for the animals to roam together). FI wanted a fun wedding… and our guests seem to be excited about the idea.

I hate myself for thinking that these prices are not so bad!

This was the first place I thought of too when I started planning. 2-3K for site rental isn’t that bad, it was the catering that was going to break the bank.

Oh well…

Caveat for The Natural History Museum — They are HORRENDOUS about getting back to you, which, in my book, raises a red flag about how attentive they are to weddings in general. I called and e-mailed dozens of times last year and finally gave up. After I had visited several other venues and after I had booked our actual venue, The Natural History Museum finally called me back…nearly an entire month after the last time I contacted them. Needless to say, we didn’t get married there, even though it was my first choice. Boo!

Sarah- I love the wild animal park- do you get to ride the train around?

Our runner-up venue was a garden nursery if that counts as unusual. If we were starting from scratch I’d look into the rock and mineral museum nearby.

One of the most popular venues out here is a brewery/pub chain.

Weird thing - I just heard on the news this morning that at a Wolfgang Puck catered event (Beyonce was there) - everyone who ate the food is now in danger of getting Hep A because one of the food preparers has it. GROSS
