Long Engagement

February 27th, 2007 @ 1:38 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

Mr. Blueberry and I have had a rather long engagement. We got engaged on Sept. 10, 2005 (actually, the wee hours of the morning of the 11th), but our wedding isn’t until May 2007–almost 2 years from the time we first got engaged!

This long engagement means that it feels like we’ve been engaged for for-frikkin-ever! I’ve been calling Mr. Blueberry “my fiance” longer than I called him “my boyfriend,” as we’ve now spent the bulk of our relationship engaged.

I wonder if this is unusual at all, and I always love to see what our lovely readers have to say, so I think I must pose a poll!

How long did you and your FI date before getting engaged?

Mr Orchid & I were dating for 6 years before we got engaged. :)

We dated for almost four years and our engagement is a little over a year. I think if you’ve had a short dating period, a long engagement is a good idea, but I guess that’s just speaking out of the fact that I’ve had relationships that lasted for two years that ended horribly, and I needed to know we’d last longer than two yeas. . .

We’ve known each other for 7 years at this point!

My engagement is quite long as well, but only sort of by choice. We got engaged at Christmas (2 months ago) and we’ve already been together for over 3 years and we’re 27, not too young to get married, so I didn’t see the need for a long engagement. We were originally wanting to get married this coming August, which would have been about an 8 month engagement, but ALL the good venues were already booked so it didn’t work out. It’s always been my dream to have a late summer wedding and this trumped having a short engagement, so we’re now waiting till NEXT summer - a 20 month engagement!

We dated two and a half years, and will be engaged for 19 months. Feels like forever sometimes.

Hehehe, totally funny, didn’t Miss Bluebell do a post like this? Or maybe I’m just getting confused with Bluebell/Blueberry… :)

I also wanted to add: seems like a lot of people are getting engaged for a longer amount of time! So different from the WWII days!

Miss Kiwi–she did! But it was waaaay back last summer, so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to pose the question again :-D

And I agree–engagements are getting a lot longer these days! Not necessarily a bad thing :-)

I’m with ya Miss Blueberry! We’ll have been engaged 16 months, but we got engaged at the 13 month mark… in fact our two year anniversary is on Thursday.

We had been dating for about 3.5 years when we got engaged, and our engagement will be about 10 months.

We dated for eight months, but our engagement is just shy of being two years long. The main reason for that is that I wanted to finish school, so we are getting married three weeks after my college graduation!

We dated for 11 years!!! Yes that is right 11 years. We met senior year in high school. Nobody can ever tell me I dont have patience. Funny our engagement is only 11 months, one month for each year we dated, I guess. And we have never lived together so it will be all fresh and new for both of us!

25 long months is the length of time we will be engaged. We got engaged after dating for three years and living together for two.

We dated for 7 months before we got engaged (10 if you count from our first date but we were just friends for a while) and will be engaged for 10 months. I don’t know how people handle such long engagements. I would drive myself crazy with dragging the planning out.

Most of my friends have 3 or 4 month engagements. I even have a friend who met his fi in August, started dating in October, got engaged in December and they’re getting married in March. In my opinion, it’s way too quick, but I wish them the best.

We became engaged on the 2 year mark of dating and we will be engaged 3 years by the time we get married. Talk about a long time. We were still in college when he proposed and we wanted to get our careers started. It has worked out perfectly, I don’t think I was quite ready to be married 2 years ago.

My fiance and I dated for just over 4 years before the engagement… and our engagement period is 16 months. I dislike the idea of long engagements, but ours is out of convenience — our wedding is the week after he graduates medical school, and three weeks before he will start residency. Of course, I could never imagine marrying someone that I hadn’t been dating at least three years, so maybe that explains why I am opposed to long engagements (like thistleorchid, I had the experience of dating someone for 3 years prior to breaking up, so I can’t imagine knowing in less time that you are ready to spend your life with someone!)

Well, we aren’t “officially” engaged yet, but we’ve been together since December of 2004…(so, about 26 months). Anyhow, we’re hoping to get married around 2010…dunno when the actual ‘engagement’ will be, because we’re waiting, due to being poor college students, and due to the fact that we’re going to move in together next month, and we wanna make sure we can LIVE together before we get engaged….coupled with the fact that I’m trying to lose another 90 pounds before we get married…..and I’m straying from the subject aren’t I? By the time we get married, we’ll have been together around 6 years. I’ll answer the OTHER portion of the question when we actually get engaged. lol.

K says:

Oh, and I’m only 20, so no rush. Heh.

Do I win on the longest engagement? 42 months, anyone??

My husband and I were engaged in December of ‘02 and got married in June of ‘06. Yep - 3.5 years!! We were both in school in different cities and wanted to graduate, find careers, and buy a home before we tied the knot. 3.5 years was definitely enough time to do it!

The best part? Our photographer had doubled her rates by the time out wedding rolled around, so we got essentially a 1/2-price deal!
