Veil Costs

February 27th, 2007 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Bluebell

As a companion to my dress cost poll and ring cost poll, I thought it was time to talk about veil prices!

The real inspiration for this post was my first visit with my dress (not a “fitting” because Kleinfeld’s refuses to schedule them more than 8 weeks before the wedding), where I tried on my super cheap veil from weddingveil.com and discovered that a) it was wayyy the wrong color with my dress, b) it was wayyy the wrong length with my dress, and c) the material, while decent looking by itself, just didn’t manage to hold its own next to my super pretty gorgeous fabulous gown. Sigh. So back to the drawing board on veils I go.

My mom asked them to bring me a few similar style veils to try on, and I fell in looooove with one for the absolutely ridiculous price of $1,600. GAH. It’s just a little piece of fabric, people! She brought us several others that weren’t much cheaper and managed to go down on the price by several hundred dollars for the first one (since I didn’t want it as long as the sample), but I am still so so so discouraged in my veil search. I don’t think there’s aaaany way I can justify over $1,000 on a veil!

So now, even though I know it will have the exact opposite effect of what I am deep down hoping, let’s see how much everyone else is paying for their veils!

How much did your veil cost?

[As a disclaimer, I have been searching for many months for a decent veil for under $200, but the style I want is very hard to find, the color of my dress is very hard to match, and it's also a weird length. So I really am doing my homework here, but I just can't find anything.]

My sister has a very good friend who recently got married and got a really expensive veil that she’s willing to lend to me as I’m wearing the same designer she did on her wedding day and our dresses are similar in style and identical in color/fabric. She’s planning on selling it on ebay anyway, so she thought I might as well get some good use out of it before then. If I ruin it on the day of, I’ll of course offer to pay for it, but if not then it’s mine for free for the day! And a something borrowed to boot!

Wow thistle, you lucked out!!! I’m so jealous. :-) But that’s awesome!! Too bad I’m one of the first to get married in my friend group and 2 of the 3 recent weddings I’ve gone to the bride didn’t even wear a veil. :-(

I borrowed my veil from a friend and she got it at the Vera Wang sample sale. Depending on what type of veil you want and how crafty you are you can go to the garment district and buy the tulle and make a veil yourself. It’s really not that hard to do.

I have a veil post going up soon (I think), and there’s a vendor on there I’d recommend to do something custom for you at a reasonable price. She’s out here in California, but you may be able to work with her via email/phone/fax if you have good photos of your dress and a good idea of what you’d like in mind.

I got mine from David’s bridal. They worked with the dress and I thought they were a fair price. They were also very simple too. I have two veils because we bought a fingertip one when we bought the dress…but then when I lost 35 lbs the cathederial length looked awesome. So we got that one too…I will wear one at the reception until major dancing starts, and the cathederial at the ceremony. The most expensive veil was $99.

i also got my dress and veil at kleinfeld. i don’t know what your dress looks like but i got a two tiered simple house veil for $100 at kleinfeld. you really do need to try on the veil with dress to make sure it looks right. good luck!

we’re making my veil. a friend’s mother has offered to do, but from what i gather, it’s really not difficult at all. the material is fairly inexpensive, even if you’d like a chiffon veil or an alencon lace border.

I was able to make mine for less than $9 total. I love it and can’t wait to wear it with my dress.

I actually bought 2 veils to wear for the ceremony. Both were from Alfred Angelo, and they just came out in January. I have a cathedral length one that cost about $200 that I will tuck under my updo. Then I have an fingertip length that cost about $100 that will tuck in just above my updo and will lay on top of the longer veil. I was amazed at how good it looked! I didn’t think I’d like it when they were picking things out, but it turned out amazing!

Mine was free. since I’m getting it from my cousin. I did buy some crappy veil from an ebay shop but got my money refunded, so it’s zero from that one, too. :)

if you, or someone you know, is remotely skilled with a sewing machine you should try making it. i made myself two different styles of veils. i spent $17 total, including the beautiful rhinestone haircomb i’m using to attach them with. if you don’t know how to make a veil visit your local fabric store. they usually have instructions for free, not to mention tons of old ladies that are more than happy to help you. also there are some instructions on Michael’s website too! good luck!

I haven’t bought mine yet. I may try making it, if not, I’ll get an inexpensive one. All I want is something one layer for the very back of my head, it’s not supposed to be a big feature. Since my gown is ivory, I’m waiting for my gown to come in before I get a veil so that I can match color. (I don’t have a swatch of my gown fabric.) May decide to do without it entirely, as I bought a tiara that I absolutely love and I’m not sure I like the look of a tiara *and* a veil. I love my tiara so much I’m thinking of getting less elaborate but matching tiaras for my bridesmaids, who are all young girls, ages 15-10.

I had one made with trim to match my gown. I felt so silly spending the money (I think almost $300) on tulle but what the hell, it’s the only time I’ll get to wear something so girly and specific.

Thanks for all the advice guys!!

Mrs. Daisy - I’ll definitely check them out!

I have also contacted Occansey Designs who says they can either mail me a sample of the edging or I can buy it myself and send it to them to make the veil with, so there’s a good chance I’ll end up going with them.

I TOTALLY wish that I could just make my veil, or find something similar, but it’s just tooo hard to match and too specific, and I don’t think I could attach the edging nicely enough. :-( But kudos to all of you who are!!!! In my next life, if I had a dress that would go with another type of veil, I would toootally make it myself! :-)

I must say, I’m very glad to see that most of us buy veils that are reasonably priced! I’ve never been able to justify spending big bucks on a veil (at least, not on my budget!). Mine was $60 at the bridal shop, and I even thought that was a bit shocking. But at this point I’m just not willing to take on another DIY :-)
