Daddy’s Green Thumb

February 28th, 2007 @ 3:56 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Since I was a child I was immersed in plants and flowers. My dad had a talent for plants, something I must not have picked up. :) He called me the other day to tell me he had new new orchids blooming, and wanted me to come over to see them as soon as possible.

So, on my way to my doctor’s appointment, I stopped by and saw these:

I think it’s a phaleonopsis orchid, and it has the oddest colors. They’re like a greenish/orangey/brown color but in person are just stunning.

These blooms are so hardy, look like they’re indestructible, and man, there are SO many on each stalk. I wish they’d last until the wedding, because then I’d have some awesome flowers for the ceremony!

My dad also grows many other kinds of orchids, and I may just stick one in my bouquet for luck!

Are you guys using any flowers from home? Or maybe using a type of flower because it means something special?

Hrmm, its hard to tell for sure, but from squinting at the pix, those look like Cymbidium orchids (just FYI). My mom is a ginormous orchid nut and currently has 80+ orchid plants in various states of bloom/dormancy at home!

I am using green cymbidium orchids for most of my floral bouquets and arrangements because my dear mom — who passed away recently — loved orchids and the color green… that way she will be present in everything.

Those are gorgeous!!! I wish I grew things!!

And if I were you I would definitely use a little sprig of something grown in your dad’s garden, that would be sooo sweet!!

my dad was pretty much my florist at the wedding..he did all the centerpieces, the head table and the church flowers too..the only flowers he didn’t do were the bouquets and boutonnieres..my dad’s definitely been gifted with the green thumb as well :)

That flower is gorgeous.
My mother is actually growing all of the flowers and my sister-in-law is .. uh.. putting them all together. Whatever you call that. Arranging? I guess she does that when she isn’t taking care of her two girls.

My dad also has a whole front yard full of cymbidiums in shades of yellow and cream and pink and mauve but they will have already finished blooming by the time my wedding comes along… maybe we should move our date a month or 2 earlier. ;-)
