Oscar Inspired… Aisle?

February 28th, 2007 @ 2:20 pm by Mrs. Emerald

One of my favorite things about Oscar night is watching the E! Channel’s Live From the Red Carpet Pre-Show. The celebs, the fashion, the jewels, the swank, the red carpet. That got me thinking… how awesome would it be to walk down our very own red carpet on our wedding day?! SWEET, of course!

red carpet

So I visted my best friend eBay and typed in “red aisle runner” and up popped seller taylorrentalnj, with a slew of options! Now I need to find some time to visit my venue (our ceremony will be on the outdoor terrace) with a tape measure so I can figure out if I should order the 50, 100, 150, or 200 foot runner. In price, they range from $25 - $70 depending on the length.

red runner

Of course I also had to do some research on the background of aisle runners in general, and to see if there would be anything negative about having a non-white one. This is what I found from Bridesvillage:

History of the Aisle Runner
The history of the wedding aisle runner includes both practical and spiritual accounts. In the days of muddy streets, the wedding guests would track dirt and mud into the church. Not wanting to walk through the grime, an aisle runner was laid to protect the bride’s dress. After all the guests were seated, an usher would unroll the aisle runner to give her a clean path to the alter. It is also said that in ancient times, it was believed that evil spirits lurked beneath the earth’s surface. The bride, considered to be pure, was therefore particularly vulnerable to these spirits. Fearing the spirits would rise up through the floorboards of the church, an aisle runner was laid for her to walk on to protect her from those spirits and preserve her purity.

Hrmm, so while the most commonly used white aisle runner may have the “pure” connotation, seems like it was mainly used to protect the bride’s dress, and to protect her from evil spirits. Sounds like a red runner could serve the same purpose, no? I just wonder if any of my guests will see this as “inappropriate” and too “untraditional.”

Anyone know of any legitimate reasons as to why I should NOT use a red runner?

P.S. Red is the primary color in my color scheme, so it seems perfect!

i say go for it. it’d be fun and you’ll feel like you are on the carpet with all the flash bulbs popping as you walk to the altar.

If it will make your big day that much better then go for it. Since red is already part of your color scheme, it will fit right in!
