Passport Update!

February 28th, 2007 @ 4:29 pm by Mrs. Bee

You read earlier that I procrastinated on getting my vaccinations until yesterday. Well Mr. Bee picked up my passport today too - and we’re leaving for Costa Rica on an 8 am flight tomorrow! I swear I was just too busy! icon_razz.gif

For those of you looking to get your passport expedited, here’s the low down on the process I went through. I tried to get an appointment at the New York Passport Agency (which happens to be within walking distance), but they were all booked. So I researched a couple of different passport expediting services in New York, and many of them recommended It’s Easy Passport.

There were two forms I downloaded from the site and filled out - the passport application, and an authorization letter for It’s Easy to process my application. Then I took the forms, two passport photos, my old passport, a copy of my e-ticket, and headed to their office. Once I was there, I simply submitted all the requisite documentation, paid the fee and I was out of there in 5 minutes.

These were the fees as follows:

Passport Renewal + Expedited fee to State Department - $127
It’s Easy 4 Day Processing Fee - $145
Total - $272

I dropped my application off on February 16th, a Friday, and my passport arrived the following Friday, the 23rd. Monday was a holiday so it took 4 business days to process. All in all, a pretty easy process.

According to the State Department website, I can get a new passport when I change my name without a fee if my passport was issued within the last year. So I promise - no more procrastination, and I’m going to change my name when I return! :)

Thanks for the low down. My passport has been expired for over 10 years now. I should look into getting it renewed. I used to have dual citizenship - U.S and Japan, but I think that expired when I turned 21. Oh well.

Mrs. Bee, I hope you have a great time in Costa Rica. Sounds like you are drugged up enough so you won’t catch any diseases. *knock on wood* Oh, and I know it’s early but Happy Anniversary!!

I paid Passport Renewal + Expedited fee to State Department - $127 and got my passport in 8 business days. (I overnighted the application for $8.50) Thanks for the post Mrs Bee, it wasn’t until reading your post that I realized to check if my passport’s expired, and of course it was!

i would have used the expedited service which says it takes around 2 weeks, but they’re so backed up now I didn’t want to risk it. next time i won’t let it expire… but that’s in 10 years. :)

I went and applied for a passport back in January and still haven’t gotten it. I didn’t do expedited as it was insurance for a possible trip to France this year for his work. I’m eagerly awaiting mine as the check has been cashed and I’d really like my birth certificate back! :) I’m just sad that it will be over a year until we get married so that it won’t be free for the name change. :(

FYI - I’ve also been waiting for my passport (App turned in in January and check has been cashed). Turns out the offices are WAY backed up!! They are now saying 8-10 weeks!!! They say our passport apps were process just last week and won’t be mailed for another month! We leave next week to Italy and were told we did not need to expedite! Now i’m jumping thru hoops trying to get it in time. It sucks….the whole process….And if you expedite….they’ll only take 1 week. Wish we would’ve done that from the beginning. :(
