Trash This Dress

February 28th, 2007 @ 5:55 pm by Mrs. Bee

Miss Lime previously blogged about Trash This Dress, but I didn’t take a look at it until reader Jen sent us a link. Trash this dress is a blog that features pictures of brides getting their wedding dresses dirty, wet, and trashed!

Check out this month’s featured photographer, Sol Tamargo. This bride looks like she’s having a blast, and her mermaid style dress is perfect for these pictures! Absolutely gorgeous!

i’ve seen this style of photography before. honestly, the shots are really breathtaking but i don’t know how i’d feel about trashing my wedding dress. it would take alot for me to decide to do that.

Gah! I could never do it. Those are some gorgeous photos and the bride sure does look happy but I just couldn’t bring myself to wreck a $1000 item of clothing!!

Haha Miss Lime - I have been to the “Trash The Dress” website before, via weddingbee so I was surprised to see this as a new feature.

I HAVE decided to trash my dress. Why? Fiance and I live in Ohio in an apartment with limited storage space, the wedding is in LA where my parents have even less storage space, and we are honeymooning in Hawaii, and not stopping through LA to pick up anything, not even gifts! So, the mechanics of getting the dress off after the wedding and back to Ohio and finding a place to store it was a bit overwhelming…

Then, my photographer (a friend from Ohio), was begging for us to go take some beach shots the afternoon of the wedding (reception ends at 3:30) and I said - why not? You only get to do it once, and quite frankly, I was going to donate it anyhow.

And yes - it could go to a better cause, like the Make a Wish foundation or something, but my fiance and I donate regularly via our church and other avenues, so I figured this once - we could be extremely decadent and wasteful.

Hell to the no. Hell to the no. I would cry hysetically the whole time if I did. So would my dad.

and to “h” and “Laura” - I have no emotional attachment to my dress. I can’t explain it, and maybe I will when it’s all over and done with, but to me, it’s just a white dress that I can only wear once. I know my future children won’t want to wear it, as the times change, and it’s not even a very pricey one (Maggie Sottero ~ $800) as there is no lace, embroidery, or pickups in the train. It’s just a very plain, white dress.

I can certainly see how if you spent a bunch on your dress and/or had it made for you, you’d want to keep it.

Lol at Miss Strawberry, and I echo her sentiments exactly.

I’m going to save my dress; I have four younger cousins (read: flower girls!) who will be getting married in about 20 years–not to mention my own future kids! I’m not naive enough to *assume* that any of them will want to wear it, but I’d like to think they’ll have the option. :-)

I am DEFINITELY doing this! In fact, I just made the appointment with my photographer to do it about a month after the wedding! :) I can’t wait.

Like n, I don’t have sentimental attachment to my dress either…I love it, and think it’ll look great, but it’s very simple and I paid $150 for it (bridesmaids dress). I’d definitely consider trashing it, if the opportunity arises for some great pictures.

I’m not sure all of the water pictures really end up with a trashed dress though. I’d think a lot of them probably would wash up fairly decently. You’re gonna get more ‘trashed’ rolling around in the grass.

Can it really be restored after it’s “trashed” like this?? Those shots are sooo beautiful though!

I have to wonder what sort of album these pictures are being put in… because I know I’d be uncomfortable showing any of the “sex on the beach”-type pictures to my in-laws!

I’m a wedding photographer and I have yet to come across a couple would would be willing to do this - most people aren’t so risky! But it would be some awesome shots. Usually the awesome ones ARE the riskier ones because it’s much more rare.

I just trashed my dress this past weekend with our photographer Leigh Miller! She’s posted a few pics and a slideshow on her blog. My dress is sandy and dirty but it’s nothing a good cleaning can’t fix. We had a blast and are so happy we had the opportunity to do this as it gave us a chance to get some really creative pictures that we didn’t have time for our on wedding day.

You can see the pix at:

I want to hire a photographer for my honeymoon in Phuket, Thailand — would love to have shots like these, but not with my real gown!! I may buy an extra (*cheaper*) dress to take some beach-y shots in.

Has anyone hired a photographer in Phuket before??

hey rhea… leigh is our photographer too! I just commented to her that seeing her latest “day-after” pics makes me want to take them! i think i am totally convinced now! our epics are on her blog too… we took them at the wild animal park!

Are “day-after” pics literally taken the day after your wedding?

No way! I’d get it altered into a shorter dress or donate it to charity before I trashed it. The pictures of the brides with their husbands are cute, but the pictures of the brides floating in the water by themselves kind of freak me out–they’re too Ophelia-ish for me!

I wouldn’t trash it, but love the idea of a day-after shoot. MrsHoya and Mrs.Kennedy on the knot had great day after shoots…but I don’t think I’ll have time/energy/money. We’ll see! :-)

k - you could always put one of the beachy husband/wife shots in your bedroom! :)

I do agree with some of you, I think some of the pictures are a little weird…I love most of them, but some of the floating in the water pics look like dead people. Lol.

I’d totally do this!! After I bought another, cheaper dress to do them in. ;-) I can’t sacrifice my dress, but I wouldn’t mind ruining another dress for those great shots!

Hey Ladies!!!… I came across to this website and I saw my latest “trash the dress” photos posted, Ashley & Chris… Oh yes!, I’m the photographer, swimming with the bride to get this amazing shoots..

From reading the comments, I can see many of you have concerns about “trashing” the dress… the word itself sounds pretty harsh, but trust me, is just water and sand…

This particular bride, Ashley, sent me an email, so excited after seeing this photos, and so happy that she done this, she said : “My dress is perfect”…., you can see on the photos how extreme this session was, we did everything!, rolling in the sand, swiming in the ocean, and jumping the pool!…

Having a destination wedding is such a dream come true, and It’s even better when you have fun with your love…, and really enjoy all the nature that surrounds you, the beautiful ocean!…

I’m a bride to be… next december… and I’m trashing my dress!!!… for sure!…

So, as a photographer, and bride to be, all I can say is HAVE FUN!!!! and get the best wedding photos ever!, this is a once in a life event!!! and your dress is going to be FINE… I promise…

Cheers from Riviera Maya Mexico.

I’m using Matt Adcock for our November 2007 wedding and can not wait to do my “Trash the Dress” session!

Matt and Sol have a great eye for this really creative and out-of-the-box type of presentation that most people gasp at and couldn’t fathom participating in. What an awesome way to scream to the world I’ll never where a brides dress again, our love is forever!

A huge resounding Thank You to Matt and Sol for helping to keep creativity alive and moving away from the boring still photos you normally see at weddings - still beautiful, of course, but the way you guys capture the moments to tell a story, raw emotion so deep it brings tears, so the viewer can really feel what’s happening, is worth millions. I feel so honored to have you save those treasured moments for me to savor, enjoy, and remember for years to come! See you in November!

Hi there! I’m getting married on Cozumel in May and I SOOO want to trash my dress. The ONLY concern I have is how do I package the dress or care for the dress while I’m on my honeymoon? I’m not one bit concerned about sand/ocean water damage but I am concerned that it will not dry and start to mildew. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hola Jessica..

Sol Tamargo & I have done many of these sessions. In our experience, the dresses generally dry out very quickly (the fabric is usually light weight). I’d leave the dress hanging overnight. If you plan to stay and honeymoon in the same location of the TTD session, even better. Leave it for a few days hanging and you will be good to go. Sand & Water can be more forgiving than an evening of tooling around on a wine & beer covered dance floor. Most all dresses with fabric that touches the dance floor end up getting trashed…WAY worse than a little sea water and sand could ever do.. Package it normally as you would and all will be ok… plus, you will never wear that dress again!

Cheers & have a happy TTD session!

My husband and I trashed the dress…twice. After our wedding ceremony we jumped into a pool. I hung the dress and it was fine the next day. We met with another photographer a few months later and took photos throughout the city. Even with all of the grass, dirt, dust etc. the dress still looks great. I highly recommend trashing the dress.

You can see our first trashing at the following link:

Yup, I’m all over it. I was going to have it made into an evening gown ala Mr. & Mrs. Smith and dyed black anyhow…

Wow, Tiffany, great idea about dying it a different color…

I am a photographer and have done some of these shoots, and they’re a blast! My fiance and I are honeymooning in Hawaii and have lined up a photographer there for a TTD session. :)
