Open Question: Latin Surname

March 1st, 2007 @ 2:49 pm by Open Question

Hi Bees!

I am working on the wording for our invitations and my parents have brought up a valid question for which I need some advice. My fiance is Peruvian, and as such, his full name includes his mother’s maiden name as his surname (Jose Antonio Silva Pasapera). My new last name, however, will only be Silva. My parents are concerned that if our guests (most of whom are unfamiliar with the latin surname tradition) decide to personalize gifts for us, they will mistakenly think our last name will be Pasapera. How do you recommend making our guests aware of this without depending solely on word of mouth?

Thanks in advance!

Katie

Are you putting a name on your return address? Perhaps if you used only Silva on that, then it will clarify it for them?

In addition, on your wedding registry, you can also put Jose Silva and Katie ****…that too would clarify it for guests who are purchasing gifts off your registry without insulting your FMil.

In addition, you can also include that tidbit of information if you have a wedding website. Mr. Snow Pea and I have a FAQ or Q&A section in the “contact us” part of our wedding website where we included little “facts” about ourselves. I guess this would be most effective if guests actually read it. Btw, I know William Sonoma’s registry allows you to dictate the monogram of your choice “JSK”.

I was thinking along the lines of snow pea that you should include a blurb on an insert in your invites or your website, or a blurb in the programs (a little late for gifting). I would think information like that would be interesting to anyone, not just someone hoping to personalize a gift.

Also, if you’re using a monogram on any of your stationary, using the S right off the bat would be a good indication. Like an embossed monogram on the envelope flap or something? Maybe just a single S even

I agree with the above posters. I think an insert in each invite would be great; you can have it printed on business cards really cheaply if you decide to do that. You can also include it in your programs, if you have any
