I’ve been a bad bride and blogger. I completely forgot to e-mail Leda’s Bake Shop for a quote. If you remember, I tasted, er inhaled, Ledette’s delectable cupcakes a couple of weeks back. She did say that a cupcake tower would cost the normal per cupcake price, listed here [PDF] and to budget 1.5 mini cupcakes per guest. For a 6″ round cake up top for cutting, it’s $50 flat. Stacked cake starts around $6 per serving.

[Blogging break to send quote request e-mail.]
[OK, I'm back!]

Despite the fact that it’s pretty “average” (dang weddings totally skew the meaning of this word) to pay $6 [waaaay] plus per slice of cake in major metro areas, you can definitely find cake for less. I must do this, as this is one place I’d promised to cut back on. I’m compiling a list, which I’ll hopefully post once complete.

So onto cake tasting #2. A friend of a friend owns a bakery in Old Towne Orange. They do desserts, but they also have breakfast and lunch menus that sound amazing.

Their baked goods case:

HUGE cream puffs. They’re so cute and bubbly, looming over the smaller desserts in front.

What I tasted [yeah, so I forgot to take photos before diving in]:

First, we have a chocolate cake with whipped mocha filling and chocolate ganache. Then, we have white/yellow cake with fresh strawberry + fresh whipped cream filling and white buttercream frosting. The chocolate was to die for. Sinfully rich without being oversweet. The filling had just the right touch of mocha flavoring - not so much as to overpower the chocolate as mocha fillings sometimes tend to do. The strawberry was good, but the buttercream frosting is too sweet for my taste. Admittedly, I am a huge dark chocolate person. I *love* strawberry + whipped cream, though. These weren’t super gourmet, but they were delicious and solid cake. Especially for the price…

His verbal, informal quote - $3 per slice to feed 125. Stacked 3-tier cake, any flavor cake, any filling, any flavor fresh whipped cream or buttercream frosting (fondant costs more), any color roses to decorate the cake if I so desire, some chocolate covered strawberries to encircle one layer and maybe to top the cake, delivery, setup, and cake base or stand rental. His cakes generally range from $2-$6 per serving.

I love Leda’s cupcake. But budgeting 1.5 mini cupcakes per person is way too stingy. The mini cupcakes are literally bite size. I’m a very petite Asian girl and I could consume 4 and still be left wanting. Leda’s is delicious but you’d have to budget at least 4 per person. And I sure people would still complain about the portion afterwards.

I live relatively close to downtown Orange and my hubby and I once in a while head there for breakfast at the Drugstore/Diner… will try this bakery next time I am in that area. Thanks!

Blue Frog also has the absolute, best bear claws in town. My hubby and I pop in there at least twice a month for one.
