Loving To Give

March 2nd, 2007 @ 12:00 pm by Mrs. Peach

Oooo I am sooo excited about my favors! Mr. Peach and I decided long ago that instead of having favors, we’ll be donating that money to a charity on behalf of our guests. Originally we were just going to have a small note card at each seat explaining this and thanking them for coming to the wedding. Then, I ran into this on the knot:

I thought- how creative!! I was thinking we coud use this and put something like “M and Y have become ONE as husband and wife. We welcome you to join us in supporting the one.org campaign.” or something cheesy like that! And people would have something to take home (the bracelet)

But then! I saw this:

And I knew this was it!! How cool is an interactive favor that allows the guests to decide pick their charity. ^_^ Then they really can feel like it’s a gift that they’re not only receiving but actually giving!

Combine that with Miss Strawberry’s recent post showing this picture:

And viola! My favor idea!! I plan to have three seperate vases with some branches (each vase representing one charity). And guests will be able to take a tag and hang it on the branches that represent the charity they want for us to donate in their name. I talked with my MOH and she suggested I use pussy willow branches because they look cleaner:

Andddd did you know pussy willows are early bloomers and show first signs of spring? And we all know what this means! spring = new beginning = marriage!! ohhh yayyyyyyyyy, I am too excited about this!

Now I have to make sure my reception place has space and will okay this without forcing me to use their services and charging me an arm and a leg (they are sole decorators of the location…) *crossin my fingers*

I love that idea!! I’ve never been thrilled with just a donation card. I work in museum education and we’re always trying to keep our exhibits interactive and educational and fun all at once - and this fits the bill to a tee! People learn about hte orgs you care for, have fun choosing and tying their name and are actually actively participating. Brilliant!

That’s really neat! Do you worry at all about all guests picking one charity? Of course it’s the thought that counts even if it’s five dollars to one versus 300 to another charity…anyway, that was my thought! Love the presentation ideas!

if your wedding is in the spring, there are other beautiful branches you should consider. depending on the month, there are quince branches, peach and apricot branches, apple blossom branches, magnolia branches…they all bloom such gorgeous blossoms (usually white or pink). the pussy willows are nice, but i had to say something since you’re a spring wedding and in case you didn’t know.

i LOVE your idea though. must steal it. =)

thanks everyone! ^_^ i’m sooo happy with this idea. hee hee.

wsukarebear- hmmm, i did think about that… Mr. Peach and I try to give to various charities regularly, so if one has less than the others, we’ll just donate more from our pockets. ^_^ i mean in the end, it’s all coming from our pockets anyways. haha.

Grace- thanks for your suggestions! i’m def going to look into peach and magnolia branches as they fit our southern theme perfectly!! but price is also a factor, so i’ll have to see. ; )

We will also be donating money for our favors. This is a great idea!

Just wanted to comment on the branch thing. A friend of mine, whose wedding is in early May, has dreamed her entire life of having cherry blossoms at her wedding, and planned her date accordingly. Well, because of the weird warm January this year, the cherry trees all blossomed then — as did pretty much every other flowering tree — so her florist said there won’t be any flowering branches for her to use and she’s going to have to use fake ones.

Not sure if that’s true for all parts of the country, but just thought I’d pass that along. Of course, there are some beautiful faux branches out there.

Do you remember which knot bio you got the bracelet pic from? thanks!

Aww that’s an awesome idea! I love it all. The interaction, all of it! :D :D

Rebecca - that’s so sad to me to hear that someone wanted cherry blossoms so badly but didn’t get it due to the change it weather. *sigh* Global warming is taking it’s toll!!

Rebecca makes a good point. You can still buy the pussy willows and they can be your back up branches just in case something happens. I hope the reception place ok’s the idea.

We’re doing a donation favor ourselves, to a breast cancer charity in memory of my fiance’s mother who recently passed away, but we’re only going to mention it in the program. The little scrolls and other things left at each plate seem like overkill to us, like “ooh, look at us, we gave to charity, aren’t we great!” It’s a waste of paper, as they’re just going to be left on the table after the reception, and no one’s actually going to wear the little rubber bracelets. However, this is just our opinion.

Miss Peach says:

pencils- it’s less of “ooh, look at us!” and more of “hey, you’re the ones that are actually giving!” since we’re giving on the the GUESTS’ behalf. BUT you’re right. we did not want too much cost going into setting this thing up, cuz I also agree- the money could be better used to charity directly. ^_^ we just want to allow our guests to feel more part of the giving process. =)

Pencils says:

Miss Peach, I totally understand what you’re saying, I’ve just never really agreed with that; when someone says, “instead of a gift this year I’m donating the cost of your gift to blah blah,” *I’m* not giving the gift, the other person is. I’m just out a gift. Now, usually I think it’s a great idea, especially when we’re talking about not receiving a giant tub of flavored popcorn for the office, but that doesn’t change the fact that I didn’t give anything, it was given in my name. But I do approve of giving the guests the choice of charities, because I really dislike when someone gives to a charity in my name and I don’t like or approve of the charity.

Good luck with your branches! It’s a lovely idea. Not to add more options, but can you force dogwood branches? They have such lovely flowers in the spring. I was hoping for an appropriate dogwood motif on my wedding printing, but our wedding is just too late in the season.

Miss Almond says:

Pencils - That’s a great idea to add it onto the program. We are planning to donate money to a cancer research foundation. I love the idea of the bracelets and the branches. But I would rather put money toward the donation. So thanks for giving me more options. :)

Miss Peach - I also love your idea. But I’m not sure if I would give options. Is there any charity that is more special to you or your fiance? Good luck!

17.
Miss Peach says:

Pencils- hmm. i see what you’re saying. well i guess we can’t please everyone. i’m sure no matter what favors we might give out, some people will think they’re a great idea, some won’t, and others could care less. =P

dogwood branches are a beautiful idea. i have to look into those, and quince, peach and magnolia branches. altho my MOH is worried about the flowers on all of those being too delicate since a lot people will be interacting with the branches…

Miss Almod- Mr. Peach and I are still picking our charities! There is at least one we have picked out that is related to my grandmother and his aunt, but yeah, we are hoping to choose charities that have some sort of meaning to us. =)
