Polishing It Off

March 5th, 2007 @ 5:30 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Last weekend I was in CVS with Mr. Kiwi. And although I’ve recently bitten off all my nails (stress), I’m totally all about nail polishes - especially if it has a bridal name to it, like the “Wedding Party” collection by Orly. So, I bought “Kiss the Bride,” an opaque pink that I’ve been looking for!

This is the color example - it doesn’t look nearly this pink IRL! It actually looks a lot like a pinkish white.

A few more of their “Wedding Party” palette, good for the bride or bridesmaids!

Catch the Bouquet, good for toes, maybe?

Honeymoon in Style, a light pinkish color with shimmer.

Lift the Veil - a little bit too pink for me, but maybe something the bridesmaids could use, if they wanted.

Tie the Knot, a shimmery pinkish beige. I love this color a lot!

This one is Toast the Couple, a shimmery pink.

This white one is Walk Down the Aisle

There are a few more, with names like Love Each Other, Cut the Cake, Toss the Garter and Dance till Dawn.

This picture here has the bride wearing Toast the Couple

So, I finally found the color I’ve been looking for, an opaque pinkish. I just need to make sure the coat is perfect, because when I did it two minutes before leaving the house it just looked streaky. I think I may end up getting Tie the Knot or Honeymoon in Style for my wedding nails. Catch the Bouquet would look great on my toes! I really like the base colors for french manicures, but not really the french manicure itself, so I think I found the right colors here.

Do you have any suggestions for wedding day nail polish colors?

I also suggest Essie collection — Mademoiselle is my favorite too.

Use Essie or O.P.I. You’re asking for trouble if you use anything else. My faves for bridal or engagement purposes are Essie’s Steppin’ Out, Sugar Daddy, and Spaghetti Strap. Make sure to use the polishes on yourself; don’t just look at it on other people’s nails. On me, Essie’s Mademoiselle and Ballet Slippers look like ass, while other peeps swear by it.

I LOVE essie. It lasts so long and goes on really evenly.

Weezer is so right about trying the color yourself - I have found that the really pink colors look awful on me (but not on everyone!!). I like the more beige base colors - Potato Fields in particular. Looks great on more yellow (less pink) undertones.

Thanks for the recs, guys. I totally agree with you, Weezer. So many pale colors look so crap on me. My skin is very yellowish, and a lot of them just look washed out. Which is why I like opaque pale colors- it just brings out the rosyness of what SHOULD be my skin color.

Thanks guys!!!

Just married in February, and I think there were 2 photos of my hands. I ran out of time and had to skip the manicure. I did 2 coats of plain clear myself the morning of (I do have healthy strong nails, no tips required), and it was just fine. So get your pedi super early, and your mani a day or two ahead! Otherwise, that clear polish in your emergency bag (for hose runs) might be what’s on your nails!

My favorite polish for my hands is OPI’s Tutti Frutti Tonga. It’s an opaque–I don’t like sheer polishes much. Anyway, it’s a great color, it’s a little beige, a little peach, a little pink. It’s just a perfect shade. It looks good on my hands both when they’re pale in the winter, and when they’re slightly less pale in the summer. (I’m a very fair blonde, Prescriptives cosmetics calls me a blue/red.) I’m probably going to use that for my manicure for my wedding, and one of my usual raspberry pinks on my toes, maybe OPI’s Senorita Rosalita. I’m wearing closed-toe shoes so my pedicure doesn’t matter, and the bright color will be great for my tropical honeymoon!

O.P.I. also has a “Kiss the Bride” color, which I love. I actually picked it out based only on the color the day after I got engaged (I had to get a manicure ASAP since everyone would be checking out the new ring!) and thought it was really fitting that it just happened to be called Kiss the Bride.
Every time we make a trip to visit more family we haven’t seen since the engagement, I go get my nails done and use the same color. :)

OPI in Matched Luggage is my fave! It’s a very light pinkish, beigeish color - opague, no shimmer. Looks great on toes.
