Beehive

March 6th, 2007 @ 4:30 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Mary wants to know if she can feel good creating her own album sans touch-ups because she found an inexpensive printer who charges 50 cents/4×6 print for high quality prints. She’s also looking for a traditional leather archival quality album - is Renaissance good?
  2. suetibu wants to gocco print on her invites on plexiglass, but doesn’t own one and doesn’t know how else to affordably print on plexiglass. Any suggestions for this NYC bride?
  3. Cheapo Bride is looking for a good, affordable seamstress in the LA/OC area who can sew her a bustle.
  4. melodiouscarol is looking for a place in LA that rents bridal gowns for engagement photos.
  5. Amma is looking for descriptions of Jewish wedding traditions to put in her program. She and her FI are reform/conservative.
  6. alisaandthor is having a horrible time finding inner and outer envelopes for her pocketfold invites. She’s using a 5×7 pocketfold from envelopments, which requires a 51/2 x 71/2 inner envelope and a larger outer envelope. Any suggestions?
  7. Not skinny enough is looking for something to smooth out her belly under her figure forming dress. She’s a size 2 and has tried spanx and a corset, but they’re not tight enough to work on her. She also needs help in the chest area as her dress won’t allow her to wear a bra. She’s worried those sticky things will fall down in the middle of the wedding.
  8. Leslie is in the process of making her invitations. The text was printed on vellum paper on a laser printed, but has a slight tackiness remaining. Is there anything she can do to “cure” the vellum?
  9. fishgal wants to know if anyone has used the Mindy Weiss organizer because she’s thinking of getting one and isn’t sure if it’s worth the high price point.
  10. newcomer wants suggestions on where she should put her wedding website info, so her guests can RSVP and get all wedding-related information. She saw people put them on their STD’s, but she isn’t doing them.

5. Anna - You may want to ask your rabbi if he/she has any suggestions - they may already have something written up. Have you tried a google search? Terms like “Jewsih wedding tradition explanations” might be helpful.

7. Not skinny enough - as a woman who is a size 14, trust me - your size two is perfectly gorgeous without a corset/spanx/etc. If you don’ believe me, ask your bridal consultant and best friend, I bet they’ll say the same thing. As for the sticky things - they do work! Or at least they did on my size D’s. Just be sure to use the alcohol wipe they come with or you’ll be pulling gooey stuff off your breasts all honeymoon long. There are also bras that are strapless and backless, they affix themselves by coming down around the torso and ataching around the stomach. Go to a good lingerie department (try a Nordstrom’s if there’s one near you) with a picture of the front and back of your dress and ask for their advice. Then have them fit you professionally so that you’re sure you have the right size.

7. since when is a size 2 “not skinny enough??” Goodness gracious. If the spanx won’t fit, that means you don’t need them! If you’re that small and you just don’t want any pooching (however minimal) to show, I’d just opt for control top pantyhose. AS for the sticky things, they’re REAL sticky. Trust me. If you just don’t like the idea, get a bra (or just cups) sewn into the dress itself. And stop worrying about your belly, girl! :P

7. go braless and just make sure the seamstress does her job. there should be no slipping. I am sure you dont have a tummy, but if you are worried cut out on salt and work the crunches.

I have a question for the beehive. I am in the process of making my invitations. The text was printed with a laser printer on vellum designed for such. After being printed, the vellum has a slight tackiness that has remained. Is there anything I can do to “cure” the vellum?

Leslie says:

6. Check out lcipaper.com. That is where I got the envelopes for my invitations, which are 5×7. They have a wide range of envelope sizes and types.

4.) Melodiouscarol, I know of a place in West LA called “One Night Affair” and you can rent dresses there. Other than that, no idea!!

6. alisaandthor. you should check out cardsandpockets.com. if you’re ok with having white envelopes they sell them in the size you’re looking for. each are $0.15. i ordered my pocketfolds and envelopes from cardsandpockets.com. great service & cheapest prices.

thistleorchid - YOU GO GIRL!

Not skinny enough - really … come on - lets not complain about a size 2 …

Nony Mouse says:

As another small-size with some odd rolls, I have to say that spanx worked for me, but that you have to get the right size AND you MUST have good posture. And stomach crunches do help, but part of that is being aware of how you’re holding your stomach.

6. alisaandthor,
Try http://www.envelopemall.com. I got my envelopes from there for my weird sized invites (I needed 5.5×8). There’s tons of selection, and the prices are great. Only problem I had was that it’s kind of hard to search through all their envelopes since they have so many. I almost bought 6×9 envelopes until I, by chance, happened upon the 5.5×8

4) melodiouscarol - I’m renting my wedding dress from One Night Affair - it’s in W. LA on Sepulveda just south of Santa Monica. Here’s their website: http://onenightaffair.com/

(1) Mary- are you still going to hire a photographer to shoot the wedding? I think you can definitely pull it off, esp. w/ Renaissance albums! The albums/quality they offer seem to be EXACTLY the same as a big photo vendor in NYC..the albums have the same names !

(4) Melodiouscarol - I would check out the Wedding One location in LA. They rent gowns for weddings/e-pics, try to negotiate a good price.

(7) Notskinnyenough - maybe you need to check out corsets for petite figures? Or have your seamstress/tailor sew in cups for bust.

(8) Leslie–try a light coating of aerosol hairspray. That’s what I’m using on my cardstock invites, so I don’t know if it’ll work on vellum or not, but it’s worth a shot. This is a cheaper version of the spray that artists use to seal their works when they work in chalk or pencil.

(6) Alisaandthor–Paper-source.com provided me with inner and outer envelopes. They weren’t listed on their site; I had to call.

(2) Suetibu–eBay may have some Goccos for sale; I know several of the ‘bees bought them off there a few months ago :-)

Fatafelice says:

(reposting b/c I posted in the wrong spot! oops!)

(6) Alisaandthor: I also got my inner and outer envelopes from their lPaperSource’s luxe collection. Their A7 envelopes are 5.25¢¢â€š¬³x 7.25¢¢â€š¬³, which should give you enough room for a 5Æ’-7 invite. Then they have an A7.5 envelope which is 5.5¢¢â€š¬³x 7.5¢¢â€š¬³ for the outer. Would that work?

I also think that you may not need an inner envelope with a pocket fold, in which case you could just get the A7.5 and it would be plenty big enough.

CBeth says:

Suetibu–you’ve probably already thought about this, but what about screenprinting? It’s really not very hard to do, and all you need (besides materials) is a lamp to expose the screens and a tub or hose to rinse out the screenprints in. We’re screenprinting our invites and I’m really excited about it! There are a bunch of tutorials online if you need help.

Question for the hive: Has anyone used the Mindy Weiss Wedding Organizer? I’m thinking of getting one (victim of bridal mag salesmanship) but i’m not sure if its worth the high price point. thanks

17.
thistleorchid says:

fishgal - depends on if you think you’d really actually use it. I tend to find that the book things aren’t that useful. When the mood strikes me, it’s not nearby and I end up jotting something down in a notebook I keep on my desk/purse/etc. Google notebook and google spreadsheets have been great for keeping pictures (I scan the magazine ones in) organized and in one place that I can manipulate and get anywhere i go (well, anywhere I go that has a computer and internet, which most of my vendors do). Google spreadsheets also allows me to manipulate guest lists/seating arrangements/etc fairly easily and you can share it with other people. So for example, the invitation list can be accessed by your parents, your FI, his parents, etc.

Just be sure it’s the type of thing you’re acutally going to use. Are you more of a pen/paper gal than computer? Do you generally like organizing folders (good way to know - could you find your tax forms from 2002 in less than 2 minutes if you were in the right room?)

6. Alisaandthor: You’ll need an A7 for inner envelopes and an A9 for outer envelopes (I had the same problem as you!). I found a great selection of high-quality linen envelopes from http://www.paperandmore.com.

Can anyone show me a wedding website card that tells our guests to RSVP and get all wedding-related information online at our website? I did some google search, and some people put the information on the save the date card, but since we didn’t do save the date, can anyone suggest a good place to publish that information? Thanks.

I have information (from a friend’s wedding) on the Ketubah, Bedeken (veiling), the Chuppah and Breaking of the glass. If you’d like the text email me - jennypah@yahoo.com

19. newcomer - im in the same situation as you. we decided to scrap the stds and im now trying to figure out where to put our site info since i know it cant go on the invites. im thinking that for the invites im going to make “packages” that have not only the invite and response card, but also a map/directions, hotel info, and a little card with our site address. that way they have all the info they need without us playing mail tag (me keeping track of sending this after they send back that). plus, it’ll save on postage since ill send everything at once, and it wont be enough extra papers to raise the costs of mailing.

5. For my fellow Jewish bride, check out a very helpful book called, “The New Jewish Wedding” by Anita Diamant (available on Amazon.com.) It’s seriously the 6th Book of Moses! It outlines everything that makes the Jewish wedding different, why the traditions came to be, and ways you can adapt them to make them your own. And you can cobble together the short descriptions you’re looking for within the chapters. I also bought “The Creative Jewish Wedding” but it wasn’t as clear and straightforward as this one.

19. where is it written that you can’t put the website on your invites? My invites are custom designed and we are just putting a line of “RSVP at http://www.ourwebsite.com by DATE”. No enclosure cards…no place to put them!
BTW, I’ve been using wedshare.com for our website and have been really happy with them. Just in case anyone is looking for a wedding website provider that will keep an organized database of your online RSVPs.

newcomer, I used weddingwindow.com and it cost me about $60. I later found out about another website called ewedding.com and that one is FREE and does everything weddding window does. You can put all your wedding info there as well as have your guests RSVP to events.

Question:
My hubby and I have planned a mini-moon to Vegas but we’ve never gone as a couple. We’ve only gone by ourselves with groups for Bachelorette or Bachelor party.
Any recommendations for good restaurants or things we can do together? (We’re planning on seeing a cirque show)

turtle says:

Katiey: My FI and I went to Vegas for one of our first vacations. We stayed at Mandalay Bay, which was gorgeous and had everything you needed within walking distance- we never had to leave our hotel, except once to go to a restaurant in the Bellagio.

Some restaurants:
1) A brazilian BBQ place in Mandalay Bay: Rum Jungle - they come around with cuts of meat for you to taste- and the best mojitos!
2) Michael Mina’s at the Bellagio - expensive, but great lobster and great personal service.
3) Cigar Lounge at Bellagio (a great people watching place)
4) A French Place at Mandalay Bay: Fleur de Lys If you request for the private booth, it’s a small room just for you and your loved one, and it’s so private and wonderful! Great portions and best wine.

Mandalay Bay also has a great bathhouse and spa. It’s a nice place to unwind- it’s not coed, but it’s nice for when FI wanted to gamble a bit during the day. MB also has gorgeous bathtubs with bubble bath- or the extra luxury. There’s a salon there too where I got my hair cut one night, and they do celebrity hair- it was the best hair cut I’ve ever had.

MB also has a shark reef which make for a few hours of fun. See if there are any concerts or any other shows- we didn’t see any, but the Cirque show looked awesome.

It was a wonderful time together- one of the best vacations I’ve ever had. The airport really stinks though…

Without really reading any of the above suggestions, Piperlime.com is a great source for shoes and reasonable prices and selection of styles. For myself, I couldn’t decide so I ended up purchasing 3, but obviously one of them will end up going back!!
