About Mrs. Bee

Pura Vida!

March 6th, 2007 @ 6:07 pm by Mrs. Bee

I’ll work on a blog about Costa Rica tonight because I have over 600 pictures to sort through! 8O

Meanwhile, I thought I’d give you guys a breakdown on the cost of the trip. I know people are usually interested in what things actually cost, but sometimes it’s hard to share exact figures because money can be a sensitive subject no matter which way you dice it. But for the love of weddingbee, I must share since it might help those of you looking into honeymooning in fabulous Costa Rica. So here goes!

$1103.80 Roundtrip airfare for 2 from Newark to San Jose
$236 Roundtrip airfare for 2 from San Jose to Quepos
$52 San Jose Airport Departure Tax for 2
$901 4 nights @ La Mariposa Hotel (deluxe room)
$80 Guided Tour of Manuel Antonio Park
$130 Kayaking
$130 Canopy/Zipline Tour
$30 Butterfly Gardens Entrance

$2662.80 Total

We spent around another $500 for food, alcohol, souvenirs, cabs, and tips for the 5 days that we were there.

Now there are several ways that you can cut back on expenses -1) by taking a bus or taxi from San Jose to Manuel Antonio instead of a plane, and 2) staying at one of the many affordable hotels. They have hostels that start at $5/night with ocean views! Granted a hostel may not the ideal place to spend your honeymoon, but you can definitely do CR on a much smaller budget. ;-)

We really had the most fantastic time in Manuel Antonio and couldn’t recommend it higher. I do regret not being able to visit the volcano in Arenal and the cloud rain forest in Monteverde, but we just didn’t have enough time. For a survivormoon or a honeymoon though, Manuel Antonio is just perfect. Beaches, rainforests, and activities galore… what more could you ask for!

Coming soon… reviews and pictures galore!

peachy

my husband and i went to costa rica this past october for our honeymoon as well, and it was superb! we went in “wet” season, and everything was lush and green… our pictures came out amazing. we stayed at the arenal lodge by the arenal volcano for 4 nights and then drove west to the pacific coast and stayed at the grand papagayo resort for another 4 nights. we went zip lining and snorkeling and a lot of hiking and also relaxing on the beach… it was a little bit of everything.

pura vida!!!

hey mrs. bee, i just came back from costa rica too! i loved it! :)

i did go to monteverde and it was beautiful, but you didn’t miss much in la fortuna (arenal). it was cloudy and rainy so we saw only parts of the volcano! (i went during feb 24 - march 2.) we never saw the lava spewing out of the volcano’s mouth. we we bummed. can’t wait to see your pics! btw, that is a crazy amount of pics you took! we have only about 100, haha.

oh, another money saving tip is to book excursions that include meals. we booked a white water rafting tour that included breakfast and lunch. our hiking tour also included breakfast. many hotels in costa rica include breakfast as well. they were all delicious too!

Ooohhh… I totally forgot that they always say, “Pura Vida!” When I went a few years back, it was fun to hear everyone saying that =)

Hoard your frequent flyer miles! I got free r/t for the honeymoon!

When you are dating/engaged, there are a million weddings to go to, so be sure to open a frequent flyer account (both of you) for every airline you fly, and take advantage of “doubled” points for booking online, etc. They add up fast. If it’s too late to have enough points for your honeymoon, at least open a frequent flyer account so you can collect points from your honeymoon (usually a long trip = lots of points).
