Mother of the Bride Dress Option

March 7th, 2007 @ 4:13 pm by Mrs. Plum

What do you think?

Mother of the Bride Dress Option : wedding dress mother Z787341 dress08

(also Saeyoung Vu Couture)

Too young? Too plain? I’ll definitely add a shawl for her…..

Opinions, anyone?

I don’t want her to look old because she’s not, so no long dresses paired with long sleeve blazer-type things.

What designers are the best for mother dresses?

I love the dress, but I do think it might be too young for the MOB. I can’t quite tell from the picture, but if the dress has an effervescent (shiny) quality to it, I definitely wouldn’t go that route. A similar dress, without the shine, however, might do the trick, esp with a nice shawl/wrap.

My mom is pretty hip and very fashionable for her age. She always goes with St. John for special occasions.

I kind of think this looks like a bridesmaid dress. However, I don’t know how young your mother is, but if she’s comfortable and looks good in this sort of style then I say go for it! My mom is 60 so there’s no way she would want to expose so much skin around her neck and shoulders. She doesn’t like older “fuddy duddy” styles either though; she’ll probably go for a dress with sheer sleeves or just sleeveless but with more coverage (wider shoulder straps, less cleavage etc.)

I went back and looked at the BM dresses that you’d picked and because of the straps on this dress, it actually makes me think it would be a great jr bridesmaid dress. So, although I think it’s a smoking dress, it might not be the best option, given the BM dresses that you’ve chosen.

My mom’s close to 60, so she’ll definitely be dressed more conservative, so maybe that’s why I tend to think this is a little young for the MOB.

Although it’s a lovely dress, I think it’s too young looking…maybe it’s the color. You should check out Neiman Marcus..I think there is one in Dallas.

I actually like it. My mom is on the younger side, and her dress is similar to that except that it has a stole type thing to go with it and the straps are a little wider. On my mom, it doesn’t look too young at all. She definitely dresses her age, and the dress looks awesome and appropriate for her.

Asian ladies wear bright colors very well! I think she should rock it, maybe with a nice wrap of the same material.

my mother is 63 and she wore a nicole miller, strapless number: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2920639?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=guidednav&keyword=nicole+miller+in+All+Categories+%3e+Women%27s+Apparel&origin=searchresults - but in a purple/blue color with gold at the bottom, with a little shoulder jacket made by saeyoung vu (where i got my bridesmaid dresses). everyone commented how great she looked and loved that she didn’t wear a typical MOB dress.
if your mom loves the dress, looks good in it and feels comfortable in it, then go for it.

young.

my mother (59yo) had a matching jacket for her navy column dress. ladies of a certain age seem to be self-conscious about their upper arms, and with temperature variations, the little jackets are so great to have.

p.s. that shiny fabric doesn’t always photograph so nicely and can reflect making the wrong parts look wider

I don’t think the dress is too young at all. It really depends on your mom!

My mom is in her early 50s and is far hotter and thinner than I am. She wore an awesome chocolate strapless dress from Jessica McClintock with a cute little matching shrug (NOT a full blazer). She looked great and not matronly.

I hate those frumpy MOB get-ups. If your mom likes the dress and looks good in it, I say go for it!

My mom just ordered her dress over the weekend… After much looking around and seeing a lot of beaded jackets, which there is nothing wrong with except that it’s not my mom at ALL, we went the bridesmaid dress route. My mom’s in her early-mid 50s but has always dressed very stylishly… as others have mentioned, she didn’t really want a strapless or sleevless dress, so we got a short wrap jacket to go with it… It’s going to look great, and she’s going to look like HER… I think that’s the most important thing. :)

Nice dress, but too young for MOB unless your mom is 40 years old. Maybe just go shopping with her one day and let her pick something out. Traditional cultural attire is often nice on a MOB, if you happen to be Asian, Indian…. My mom wore a Vietnamese ao dai and mother-in-law wore a sari.

Todays mother of the bride, if they take care of themselves and are naturally quite young looking! can look as stunning at 50 as they did at 25,think Madonna,Lulu (60)Sheena Easton etc! If they are trendy and stylish in general, there is no way they should opt for a fuddy duddy outfit for a wedding. So I say wear what suits, as long as it does not detract from the bride! My mother looked at Jaques vert as this is what is sometimes expeted and although fine for some, the look was just too old for her. She ended up buying an outfit from coast and she looked stunning without being over the top. She also wore an amazing fascinator with feathers and crystals instead of the traditional hat. It just depends on individual taste.
