Need a Change

March 8th, 2007 @ 12:29 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

I’ve begun to get a little overwhelmed by wedding planning. I’ve had a lingering sickness for almost a month now, and that isn’t helping the matter any. Being sick with something they’re not quite sure what leaves me feeling unbelievably discouraged. So, to make myself feel emotionally better, I’ve been pondering getting highlights.

If you can remember, I have very dark brown hair, with a slight purplish (is that a word?) tint to it in the sun.

I’ve had highlights off and on for the past 6 years, going from blonde to red to brown. My natural hair color is just so dark that it makes me look very washed out most of the time. After not having anything done to it for more than two years, I was inspired by an episode of True Life on MTV. And yes, that is very sad to say. :)

Anyway, there was a girl who had highlights like I used to have. And while the blonde is a little too young for me now, (I looked like Kelly Clarkson for a year or so, remember her American Idol hair?) I’m thinking of getting reddish or auburn highlights. I’ve had it done before and it’s not a huge difference, but it does look better, and I think a little cosmetic enhancement would help perk me up.

With the wedding eight months away, I figure now may be a good time to get them, and see if I like the look. If I do, I can do it for the wedding as well. For what it’s worth, they would be a thin version of highlights, not the chunky kind I had before.

While it’s not a drastic change, it IS a change. What do you think about changing the look of your hair (even slightly) for your wedding day? Is it too risky?

i think highlights are a nice idea. i know many brides who choose to have highlights done before the wedding so that the photog can capture a little more dimension in their bridal hair. ;)

I think it’s a great idea - it’s plenty of time in advance, would perk you up in the meantime, and besides, a little bit of color in your hair is always fun!

i finally got hip and got nice brown highlights in my dark black hair and i LOVE them. so i say definitely go for it. like kp said, they add dimension to your hair. plus, with this far out to the wedding, you’ve got time to experiment and not regret a thing.

I agree! Go for it. I think it is a bit risky to change your hair a month or so before the wedding but you have plenty of time to fix it/cut it/let it grow out before the wedding. And, if it helps it will be totally worth the risk, right?

Go for it! I recently had some highlights added back in after about 5 years with just my regular old hair color. I love it. It brightened up my face and gave my hair some more volume (which is always nice).

same with what kp said, my hairstylist suggested i get some highlights so the hairdo shows up more in the photos. if you wanted to you could try some temporary highlights just to experiment and then get the permanent dye afterwards. i think it would look nice if you had highlights because it would show the waves in your hair better.

I agree, go for it! I think a lighter brown or auburn would be sooo pretty in your hair! And if not…plenty of time to get it perfect before the wedding! :-)

HAHA…I was reading this and was amazed..I’m heading to my stylist to get highlights tomorrow! I’m about six months out on my wedding and thought now would be as good a time as any to test them out. Good luck with your highlights and I hope you feel better!

I’m too scared to change my hair (color or major cut) now, about 7 months before the wedding - so I probably should keep my opinion to myself, but — naaaah! I think a lighter brown or a caramel-y color would look great! I love red/auburn highlights, but I’ve found it’s really hard to maintain red or to get rid of it.

P.S. Totally off topic, you have great eyebrows!

go for it - you have more than enough time to change it if you don’t like it. but i love to do crap to my hair, so i might be the wrong person to take advice from. ;)
