How “Green” Will Your Wedding Be?

March 9th, 2007 @ 1:55 pm by Mrs. Beetle

“Green” weddings seem to be all the rage right now. Not literally green, of course, but environmentally green.

The New York Times recently published a story that discusses all of the “green” options for couples out there. It seems many brides and grooms are really embracing the idea of getting hitched responsibly. In fact, they highlighted a wedding planning website called Portovert for eco-conscious brides and grooms that offers all sorts of tips and resources for going green in style.

Have you considered going “green” at your wedding?

I actually thought about it for a short time, I mean anything to save the earth right, however just like eating organic food, and using friendly earth safe products, its not at all afordable, I have an extremely small budget for my wedding, so I would never to be able to make it work, but if there is ever anything that has an ecofriendly counterpart for cheaper, I’m all over it.

I’m not currently engaged yet, but the buy and I are DEFINITELY going green when we have a wedding! There are lots of green options out there that are less expensive. They only thing that might worry is organic food, but there are lots of ways to get the cost down through caterers! Style Me Pretty’s blog recently had a blog about green weddings - you should check it out!

That’s really interesting. I am not having a green wedding but I just wanted to add that I am an engineer and the future is “green building”…Basically buildings that have a green roof (garden on top of the roof ie. rockefellar center). That actually decreases the net energy consumption of the building leading to less pollution output and lower energy costs.

We also thought about it and are doing some of the small things like buying as much as we can locally and borrowing from other brides instead of buying or rental ourselves but the thing that really bummed me out was calculating the carbon emissions for our trip to Europe. It’s crazy. So, if we get some cash gifts for the wedding we are going to try to offset our carbon emissions by buying some personal carbon credits online.

interesting… because a year ago i went to DFH and said “I changed our wedding colors! I forsee chartreuse and espresso as the new colors” and that was that… Seriously folks, if you want to save some $$, this CAN be the way to go. However, you have to be careful how you choose to go green (brides can be picky, and not all greens are alike!)… our florist is going all out using different ‘textures’ instead of colors, using all greens and some willow branches to add height… you guessed it! All foliage!

Our wedding will be in Berkeley, CA, and since it’s in the spirit of the city, we will be serving organic, sustainable food at our wedding. It’s actually not that much more expensive here (rentals ironically may end up costing more than the food), partly because our caterers have their own garden but also because produce here is more accessible.

I just got engaged and am already planning my green wedding. Since I live in the SF Bay Area, it isn’t at all difficult for me to find vendors and resources that will comply with my requests (and stay within my budget!), but I can see how it might be difficult for those brides in other parts of the country where these resources are not as common. That said, thorough research and creative planning can make it happen anywhere, so don’t be daunted if you feel a green wedding is right for you. There are many e-vendors that make great eco products that can be used for weddings (recycled papers, sustainable favors, etc.), and any caterer can do “green” food as long as they seek out locally grown organic items. The biggest misconception about “green” weddings is that they are expensive… my budget is not large but I haven’t found it any more difficult to plan my wedding this way than it would be if I were not concerned with being green. If you’re thinking of going green for your wedding, do your research; I promise it’s worth it.
