Postage Woes

March 10th, 2007 @ 12:29 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

For the past couple weeks I’ve been sporadically Google News searching something that I never thought I’d care about…the proposed upcoming postage increase.

The USPS has requested an increase from 39 to 42 cents for a standard letter, and a decrease from 24 to 17 cents for each additional ounce. (Most wedding invitations are either 2 ounces or must include the surcharge for oversized or square envelopes. So the usual wedding invite postage would actually decrease from 63 cents to 59!)

The postal regulatory commission (whew, never thought I’d type that!) has recommended that they only raise the base price to 41 cents, though, so we might not have to go up quite as much! Right now, the ball is in the court of the Board of Governors of the Postal Service who are deciding whether to accept the 41 cent recommendation or keep fighting for 42.

What difference does that penny matter to me, you might ask? Well, honestly, I reeeally don’t care. If I save a penny on every one of my RSVP cards - cool! But if I have to pay it, that’s fine too. Seriously, Post Office, postal regulatory commission, and board of governors, it doesn’t matter to me!!

My problem is simply that the original timeframe for the increase meant that the rate change would be in effect “as soon as May first” and now I’m concerned that the negotiations could push it even a week later…and the later the WORSE for my wedding! We were planning to set June 1st as our “RSVP by” date, so we wanted to get invites in the mail prior to May 1 if possible….but then we might not be able to stamp our RSVP cards with the correct postage so they’ll be returned to sender (i.e. our guests) when they try to reply to us!! And as much as that penny doesn’t bug me, I’d really rather not pay a 10 cent extra buffer per RSVP “just in case,” you know?

Our current plan is to get everything assembled and addressed, buy correct postage stamps on May 1 itself, and get them out that day or the 2nd. But if there’s a delay in the rate increase…we’re on a real time crunch!! My only hope is that they might come to the final decision on the stamp increase in the next few weeks and then make the new rate stamps available for purchase prior to the effective date. Then we could mail our invites at the end of April (at the current rate) and only have to worry about increased rates for the rsvp cards. Sigh. So we’ll see. Don’t let me down Board of Governors of the Postal Service!!!!

PS. In other post office news…there will be a new wedding stamp set coming out soon!

They are currently showing the 39 cent and 63 cent denominations…so hopefully they’ll update that for the rate increase!

PPS. One more bit of post office trivia that doesn’t relate to weddings! Another item on the agenda for deciding about the rate increase is that they might create a “forever stamp” that could be used to mail a regular letter forever - even after rates increase tons of times! This would be incredibly handy since no one likes 2 cent stamps! :-)

Okay that’s about all the postal service news I’ve got for today! I’ll keep you updated on the increase date in case there are any other summer brides for whom this is falling at an inconvenient time!!

i was just about to say something about the forever stamp but i saw you put that in. if you’re in a crunch, you can mail your invites with regular postage and then use the forever stamps for the rsvps. that way you don’t have to worry about rushing to get things out or being short on postage.

I’m currently sealing up my invites right now! We have a RSVP by date of May 1–the proposed day! Since we didn’t know if the increase would be 2 or 3 cents, we went ahead and got 4c stamps to put as additional postage on the RSVP cards–the 3c stamps are really ugly, and the 4c ones are just a bit better looking, IMHO. I figured that for a total of $8.00 added expense, it’s just better safe than sorry! But what a pain to try to figure out!!!

So check this- we send our invites out next month- pre postage increase- and they are 63 a piece, but then the rsvp deadline is mid-May, post postage increase- 41… so we get screwed on both ends! We had to chuckle a little… but we are being a little too spendy- we opted for custom stamps… have to put all of those engagement pics to good use!

I am in the same boat, since I was planning on sending invites out by the last week of April. I guess that I can wait until the first week of May, but I would rather not. So if the date gets pushed back, I am planning on purchasing the extra postage stamps to add on, just in case.

I hadn’t heard about the “forever” stamp, though. That would be really helpful!

Does anyone use online RSVPs programs that come with some wedding websites? Unfortunately you will probably have to put Response Cards in with your Invitations anyway since there may be a few people who still don’t use the internet. But then again you can also have them RSVP by phone. It can save you a lot of money.

I have no patience left for the Post Office right now. I sent out a test run of save-the-dates last week to my mother, future mother-in-law and my sister - thankfully the one that reached my future mother-in-law was intact, but the other two were mangled. They were sliced open across the top and down the side. I called the PO and asked if they offered hand canceling to prevent something like this (even though that machine might not be the problem), and they said NO. They don’t have the manpower.

Also, I was paying .87 each to mail these things. If I’m spending that much, I expect my envelope to reach its recipient relatively unscathed. Seriously. If they want to increase the rate even a farthing, they need to offer better service to their customers.

Now we’re conducting mailing experiments to see how we can send them and prevent them from being torn apart en route. I shouldn’t have to do that.

Rant over.

I just bought my last stamps today… hopefully! The bad part is because they’re increasing the price, they don’t have a lot of the “pretty” stamps. For example, the 63 cent stamps I had to buy have Jonas Salk on them. I had to chuckle because it’s nothing about weddings. THAT’S what happens when you wait until the last minute :-) Happy postage to you!

Just to let you know, the proposed increase date is May 6th. The “forever stamp” is expected mid-April, but doesn’t even have a design yet… and the new wedding stamp is expected June 27th.
(this is from info from the stamp nerds)
