Beehive

March 12th, 2007 @ 5:40 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Tessa has been looking everyhere for rice paper for her DIY invites. Anyone know what she’s talking about and where to find some?
  2. Miss Mouse loves the pink & white swirl lollipops that Miss Strawberry posted, but shipping costs are crazy since she lives in Canada ($70!). Any ideas where to look for a comparable product?
  3. Aliya wants to know if an aisle runner is truly necessary? She’s getting married in a Catholic church and it seems like an unnecesssary expense.
  4. b is looking for affordable hanging votives. She can’t find them anywhere!
  5. EG wants to know what paper trimmer you recommend and how much it cost. She’s cutting 8 12/ x 11 sheets, so should she get a 12″ trimmer? Rotary or guillotine? Which gives a straighter cut?
  6. Nancy wants to know what time she should put on her invites if she wants the ceremony to start at 6 pm. 5:30?
  7. Hayley is having trouble picking out ceremony music for her wedding next month. She wants something classical/instrumental, not too contemporary or “wedding-y.” Any suggestions?

Miss Mouse:
I’m in Canada too and my recommendation would be to try a candy speciality store like Candy Mountain. I’m not sure where you are but I’m in Vancouver and there are quite a few stores like that our here.
Or the other option is to get your candy sent to a PO box in the US and then drive across the border and pick it up and bring it across yourself. I’m not sure what US border you like near, but I can almost guarantee you that if you are near one, even a small one, that there is a mailbox rental place that you can have your stuff sent to. You’ll have to have your receipt with you that showed what you paid and you’ll probably pay GST on it but it will be much less expensive to do it that way than to pay the high shipping fees and duty/tax that you would pay when it makes it to your doorstep.

Nancy - You should put the time of the ceremony on your invites… most people know to arrive around a half hour early!

Hayley - I am using Arioso (Thanks Be To God) by Handel for my song and Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring by JS Bach for the bridesmaids. Those are both beautiful songs!

Aliya-
Are you sure you’re even ALLOWED to have an aisle runner? As far as I know, most if not all Catholic churches don’t even allow it. And yes, the aisle runner is totally unnecessary.

5. EG - i have a rotary blade one from cutterbee but it’s not nearly as powerful as the guillotine one i had previously from any office supply store(i loved using that sucker). still i live in a tiny manhattan apt, and my cutterbee takes up very little space - it should be adequate for cutting invites. :)

7. Nancy - We put 5:30 on our invitations because we wanted our wedding to start at 5:45 (sunset). Since our wedding was in Manhattan though, we didn’ t have to worry about people getting stuck in traffic or being too late. =) Some of your guests may get lost or stuck in traffic, or just be running late, so I think 30 minutes is a good buffer.

One tip - we served white wine and water to the people who arrived early so they wouldn’t be bored and could mingle.

4. B-I am using a tri-hanging votive CP from Michaels (craft store). There’s a pic in my blog if you look backward. Let me know if you need any more info about them.

Aliya-
I agree with jennifer above. I too am having a catholic ceremony and they said no runners. Plus, I too think its unnecessary. What if someone tripped, that wouldn’t be pretty. What if you tripped? Yikes!

Aliya - I think aisle runners are totally unnecessary! At every wedding I’ve been to - they always forget to put them out anyways. Lol.

EG - I would say to get the rotary. The guillitine is a lot more expensive and, in my opinion, you’re more like to make a mistake if the paper slides at all. With slick wedding paper, it can get tricky. JMO.

aliya - like a few of the other comments above, you should ask your church’s requirements. i’m getting married in a catholic church, and they had specified absolutely NO aisle runners… in addition to a lot of other things like candles (other than the unity candle), and petals on the ground…

Check out CB2 for hanging votives. They have some very nice ones and the only assembly required is to hang some wire from them. THey have two different varieties:

My cutter is the Fiskers Rotary Cutter- it’s an excellent investment and even better if you have 40% off craft store coupon. http://www.fiskarscrafts.com/tools/t_12-homeoffice-rotary-paper-trimmer.aspx

EG, I absolutely vote for guillotine cutters — I had two rotaries and the edge was ALWAYS slanted. I bought this xacto one for

EG, I would recommend the 12″ paper cutter. You can get so much more mileage out of it. Mine is Fiskars, and I love it!

Hayley - I’m using Can’t Help Falling in Love with You for my processional. Just the instrumental version.

Tessa, do you mean vellum? If so, you can find it at practically any paper website. I like paperandmore.com myself.

Thanks Melanie! I have been looking in candy shops around here but have only found the rainbow coloured swirl pops. I will keep looking though. Unfortunately I don’t live near enough to the US border for that to be a cheaper option but you have sparked an idea about having them shipped to a friend of mine in the States who I know is coming to the wedding, she can just bring them with her!

Aliya - the only reason I’ve ever heard of an aisle runner being a necessity has to do with if you are marrying in a church and want to put fresh petals in the aisle. Our venue said that because heels can really grind petals into the carpet and the pigment from the petals can stain the lighter carpet, if we wanted to do petals we would have to have a runner.

Thanks everyone!! I just ordered the fiskars 12 inch rotary paper trimmer from JoAnn’s with the 50% coupon. I bought the one that was originally $59.99 so it costs $29.99. I can’t wait to use it!

Jamaligarden.com has very nice and relatively inexpensive hanging votive and hanging tealight holders.

Hayley–I am walking down to the instrumental end sequence of “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Our processional is the “Tarantella” (us crazy I-talians!) played on an acoustic guitar. Check soundtracks for great instrumental selections; Amelie is another favorite and has a lot of nice tracks that would work for processionals (listening to it now!).

I need some help! We are using Crane Lettra paper for our invites, which is specifically designed for letterpress. I will be hand addressing the envelopes, but I have no idea what type of pen to use. I figured I need something nicer than my blue gel pen from Bic! I just want to make sure we get something that doesn’t bleed all over the paper.

My bridal shower is coming up in less than two weeks and I’ve been so busy with work that I haven’t had a moment to think/fret about this, until now. Basically, one of my FI’s friend’s mom (we’ll call her Addy) is hosting my shower in her fancy Fifth Ave NYC apartment. She’ll be providing food and drinks, the venue and who knows what else. I know that my BMs are involved but I also know a lot of the coordination and work will be done by Addy. What do you suggest for hostess gift(s) for a woman who seriously has everything and if she doesn’t have it can get it herself? Help! I have access to a lot of the shops in Midtown near Rockefeller Center.

Tessa ~ check out http://www.hollanders.com or http://www.bookmakerscatalog.com also found this that might help in your search:

Rice paper is a term commonly used for washi, or Japanese papers. “Rice paper” is a misnomer, since what most people mean by rice paper is not made of rice at all but more typically with any of the three traditional materials of kozo (mulberry), gampi or mitsumata (read About Washi for more information about these fibres). In this sense, many of our papers are rice papers - particularly those in our retail section.
Specifically, you may be looking for Unryu tissue, a translucent paper with long kozo fibres that come in many colours. Alternatively, you may be thinking of a very plain paper in an off-white or natural tone.

I have made purchases for myself from Hollanders and they are fast and easy. Hope this helps!

If at all, I think it would be the Unryu tissue, Mindy. It’s definately translucent like vellum, not like mulberry paper. Thanks so much!

B - I’ve done some diy cheap hanging votive mock-ups using “flowerpot votive holders” (I think they were on sale for $0.89 or something super cheap per piece at michaels?) here’s an example - http://www.save-on-crafts.com/flowpotvotho.html

They seem to work pretty darn well… you just use medium-guage wire and wrap it around below the lip of the “pot”, and then tie either ribbon or wire in a loop over the top to make the hanger part. I think I might get some epoxy to glue the wire piece down if i go with the finished product… if that doesn’t make sense i can take pics and post them ;)

I am looking into invitations and I think I am getting the stationary bug! There is so much out there to choose from. Besides patterns and pocket folds and envelopes, to add to the confusion they use terms like A7, A6, A8. Can anyone help decipher the sizing, or know a good website with a chart of what invite goes with what envelope?
