Bouncing Off The Walls

March 12th, 2007 @ 12:27 pm by Ms Broccoli

There are going to a LOT of kiddies at our wedding. Consider this: Mr. Broccoli’s father has NINE brothers and sisters and all but a couple have 4+ kids. And let’s not forget the second cousins and their kids. No way! You say… Ha. I wish.

But really, it’s not that bad. Kids lend an air of fun to weddings, especially if you’re not set on having an ultra-fancy affair.

So I thought, why not give the kiddies something fun to do? We’ll probably have a pinata, and perhaps set aside some tables for kids only, complete with candy and board games, coloring books, etc. (granted, we’ll need to make sure we have room to do this).

Games and candy are nice and all, but if you were (still) a kid (and who isn’t, deep at heart?), wouldn’t you want to spend all your free time at a reception jumping in one of these babies?

Rentals run from $120-150; not too shabby, eh? And plus, I can already see some fun photographs of us jumping inside as well. :)

Now, all I have to do is convince our reception site to let us do this (and convince Mr. Broccoli as well, he’s been acting suspiciously conservative lately…), and pray that it doesn’t rain…!

You’ll likely be asked by your venue to get insurance if you want to have this sort of thing at your wedding - They won’t want to be liable of any injuries…also you’ll have to think about supervision!

Just a couple of thoughts

that looks like a lot of fun for the kiddies. but it could be a big hassle.

one of the weddings that my cousins were servers at had that. they said it really was a hassle. since they also had the alcohol flowing freely. but then again it was inside the reception hall. dont know how there was room for it. but it was there…

kids love that stuff…though so do i. haha. if it’s not too much trouble [with insurance and stuff] then go for it. it’ll be way popular

My historic estate reception venue has had the jumpy thingees before for non-wedding events (i.e. company parties).

On our first tour of the place, they even recommended it as a way to keep the kids in one place instead of running around in the historic home and possibly breaking something(that we of course would pay for). When you rent these things, you have to sign a contract saying that you waive liability.

That’s a great idea! I would recommend having it supervised at all times and that you issue an age or height/weight requirement for the kiddies so no little ones get trampled on!

I think that’s a great idea. With a family of so many children, I am sure the older ones can watch out for the younger ones and they are probably used to playing with one another that there shouldn’t be too many mishaps. For the most part, I find that children get along pretty well at weddings. In my opinion, it’s sometimes the parents who think this is a night off for them and drink too much and leave their children to their own devices.

Do you have a choice in the color of the castle? :)

If it rains, you won’t be able to have the jumping castle.
If the kids see the castle - that’s the end of it for them. No amount of bribery will convince them to sit thru dinner until it’s time to jump.
Some places will let you hire a supervisor for the jumping castle. I’d recommend 1 or 2.
Or you could hire a couple of college students to watch the kids in a “kid friendly” room. With crafts, movies, games etc.

I’d rethink the pinata..unless you have a VERY large room and they are VERY little children(or outside)-I’ve been to 2 weddings now where they had one-and both times it was a disaster. Once, one of the kids ended up with a badly blacked eye,and the other time, the whole thing caused so much disruption and mess that it was pretty awful. I’d stick to coloring stuff

What fun! I may look into some child distractors for my own wedding as well! Thanks for the ideas!

My little cousins/nephews have had these rented out for there birthday parties - either at venues or at their homes. They loved playing inside them and definitely kept them busy all day long. Me and Mr. Apple also couldn’t resist the fun so we would slip and slide down, jump, alongside them. It was great fun. If you do have it, make sure its not too hot outside (southern Maine probably wont be an issue) and provide lots of liquids for the kids. I love how you’re incorporating kid friendly games into the wedding. We also will be having 40 kids at our wedding, it’ll be a fun day!

Looks like fun! With alcohol there, I think you’ll have trouble keeping the grownups out of it, though! hehehe :-)

Resist all temptation to jump in there with the kids, especially if you are serving hard liquor.

We get these for school and in that case they come with some attendants, but it doesn’t take all owness off the hosts. I would haev a sitter or older-young cousin or something to watch.

We do the giant obstacle courses and the junior high kids love it! It could be fun, but I’d have a game plan, too, which you likely already do. :-)
