About Ms Broccoli

Themed Gifts

March 12th, 2007 @ 4:37 pm by Ms Broccoli

My friend and bridesmaid Sara moved to Maine when she was 14 or so. She had been an army brat for years, and Maine was the first state in which she really began to feel at home. Unfortunately, while she was attending college in Florida, her father was reassigned to Vermont. She’s just finishing up her schooling now, and is planning to move back to Maine once her boyfriend pops the question. The point of this story is that since I am doing individual gifts for each of my bridesmaids, I’ve decided to do a “Maine” theme for my dear friend Sara.

Part #1:
An LL Bean tote! LL Bean is Maine personified, and I thought that a tote would be really useful since she’s currently in Florida and practically lives on the Beach.

For an extra $5 you can get it monogrammed. I’m going to have the folks at LL Bean write out the letters “CAPA” which means “Sara” in Russian: Sara is practically half Russian, or has been for the past three years when she has joined myself and Mr. Broccoli in working in Russian orphanages over the summer. Unfortunately, she will not be able to join us this summer, so I thought it would be nice to remind her of all of her hard work.

Part #2:
Robert McCloskey’s children’s book “One Morning in Maine.” Sara loves children and I thought this would be a great collection for her future kiddies-to-be.

Part #3:
Stonewall Kitchen jams. Blueberries and Maine go together like… well, let’s just say that blueberries are BIG over here. Almost as big as potatoes, but I’m not going to get her a bag of potatoes. Well, actually, I could. I can picture her face as she opens the gift… ooh, I crack myself up.

And the rest… I am still thinking up. Perhaps I’ll abandon the Maine theme and get her something useful. Like a spatula. Or an oven. Who knows!

Love the jam, so good. Anything with lobsters is good, belt, hat, socks etc.

Oh what fun! Although I’m not from Maine my family had a business there so from almost birth to two Gray, Maine was home. FYI By the same author Robert McCloskey is “Blueberries for Sal” - one of my all time favorites as a child. Great post! Your friend will be so touched to all your thought put in this. :) VallartaTiffany

you are so thoughtful. i especially like how you are going to embroider the russian version of her name on the tote. so personal and something special that you both can share.

About the potato — there is great place in Freeport that does potato vodka. Perfect for the Russian and Maine theme.

That jam is awesome! I gave my dad some of it at Christmas and it was almost gone by New Years!
