Beehive

March 14th, 2007 @ 4:43 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Kelly wants to do a slideshow for her rehearsal dinner with photos and music. Any good site to recommend? She saw one for $99, but that seemed pricey.
  2. One of LA’s bridesmaids needs a more modest dress (must have cap sleeves) for religious reasons and she can’t find a good option that’s not matronly anywhere. Suggestions?
  3. fishgal is looking for a hair/makeup person in oc.
  4. E’s girl is looking for simple instructions on how to make “tears of joy” packets for her ceremony.
  5. E’s girl wants to know how to make or get a monogram made?

you could have a seamstress add something like this to your dress:
http://www.davidsbridal.com/accessory_return_sleeves.jsp

or get a bolero/caplet type jacket:
http://www.davidsbridal.com/accessory_detail.jsp?stid=2463&prodgroup=181

i know alteration, bridal places offer these and you can get made in a matching color.

2. LA :: I have the same issue with my bridesmaids. Check out http://latterdaybride.com/ and http://www.beautifullymodest.com/home.html
A little pricey for me, so we’re probably going to have ours made, but maybe it will work for you.

I am in love with all these really nice monograms I’m seeing on alot of bios. How can I get one made for me - or can I make one myself? I really think I need one now - doesn’t every bride? :-)

Kelly - this can be done for FREE on Power Point. E-mail me if you need instructions (luckyblues12@yahoo.com).

E’s girl - you can make one yourself in Power Point, but I use PhotoShop and Illustrator to make them myself. I can make one for you for free if you’d like (e-mail me at luckyblues12@yahoo.com).

My fiancee and I are geting married in an amazing gothic-styled church at the end of August. Unfortunately it does not have air conditioning. Any ideas to keep the people and (more importantly) the bride cool that day? I was thinking along the lines of using industrial fans w/ vats of ice but my fiancee is afraid that it will be ugly.

kelly - like the others has noted, powerpoint can help you make a good slideshow. however, if you have access to a mac, i’d def. recommend using “imovie” to make AMAZING slideshows!! :D

I’m looking for a lace bolero-ish top like the one that has been made popular by Monique L’Huillier. I’ve looked all over (eBay, used wedding gown sites, etc) and can’t find one for under $200 (that doesn’t look cheap). Does anyone know of another bridal designer that makes one of these?

Homer - maybe use Miss Snow Pea’s idea to make personalized water bottles for the guests.
http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/03/14/time-for-an-intervention/

Or consider offering cold drinks as guests enter the church. For a bit of nostalgia, maybe look into renting Icee machines (even just a frozen margarita machine would work if you left out the alcohol and made slushies).
http://jumpnsmile.com/images/Faby2%20white-blue-whtbakgrnd.png

Also, look into hand fans that the guests could fan themselves with (hey, it’s better than folding up your programs and using those).
http://www.orientaltrading.com/application?namespace=browse&origin=searchMain.jsp&event=link.itemDetails&demandPrefix=12&sku=9/789-IP&mode=Searching&erec=9&D=fan&Ntk=all&No=0&Ntt=fan&Dx=mode%252bmatchallpartial&Ntx=mode%252bmatchallpartial&y=0&N=0&Ns=PRICE_prop%7C0&x=0&sd=SOLID-COLOR+PAPER+FAN+%28IMPR%29

I think if I went to a ceremony where I got a bottle of water and a little hand fan at my seat I would forget about the heat (as long as the ceremony is short and sweet and I could get into some AC shortly thereafter!)

I’m assuming the wedding isn’t being held in the heat of the day. If so, exercise extreme caution, especially with the elderly and if there will be any pregnant women. Have a back up plan for those people, including the bride, who will most likely be wearing multiple layers. Little battery powered fans would work, too, and I know you can get them in a variety of colors.

Is spray glue the best adhesive for diy invitations? Any other adhesives you’d recommend?

Homer - it’s a really bad idea - the fans will be noisy and overpower the ceremony. Using fan programs is a good alternative :)

Question for the crowd:
How will guests know when to use the ceremony toss? We’re getting married in a sculpture garden and I want guests to shower us with Ecofetti when we make our way back up the aisle. How will they know to do this? They will be getting little glassine envelopes of ecofetti with a “Toss Me!” sticker seal.

On another note, I have an extra bag of white ecofetti if anyone is interested. It is the large, 100 scoop bag. Same price as on the site–$19.95. Any takers? email me!

Kelly, if you don’t want to do your own or you don’t have access to the software to do it, I’ll do one for you. My degree is in video production. Just shoot me an e-mail with a good subject line so it doesn’t get deleted. (StasiGHgmailcom)

Question for the hive:

My doctor is going to start me on hormonal birth control soon (until now, I’ve used the “abstinence” method, and it’s worked very well, but, uh, it’s time for a change)… and it seems like I’ve heard nothing but horror stories of miserable side effects. I’m really scared. Has anybody had any GOOD experiences with pills or patches?

I have a question:

My reception space is rather bare and we’re not allowed to hang things on the walls. I’d love to liven the space up with some big beautiful plants or trees (which we COULD hang things from!), but have no idea where to rent them and have it be affordable. I talked to a plant rental place that wanted to charge $60 per tiny office plant (plus delivery)! The nursery I talked to said I’d have to buy them, but I have no place to plant them afterwards, so that doesn’t really make sense. Any ideas? I’m in the San Francisco area if that helps.

Elsa, look on e-Bay. I noticed a seller was selling them and they’ve received 100% on their reviews and sold quite a few of those lace jackets.

http://stores.ebay.com/Bridal-Dress-For-You_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ0QQftidZ2QQtZkm

This is the store that had them. I don’t see any now, but you could e-mail the seller and find out the specifics. It has been previously listed at $120 and $130.

Hishtafel-
Haven’t ever had a side effect - even when I started continuous cycling to skip my period for months. I also have several friends with no problems - hope it goes well for you!

Spray glue is absolutely the best adhesive for DIY invitations. I tried all different kinds on my DIY invites - glue sticks, pastes, sprays, and only the spray stuck. I had to reglue a large number of pieces that came un-glued after I used the paste or sticks.

But I will warn you - pastes and sticks are a lot neater than sprays, which can get everywhere. I bought a pair of tweezers to hold the invite while I sprayed the back (otherwise your hands will get covered in glue) and put paper down on the floor if you do it inside!! I eventually started glueing everything outside because it made such a mess…

Jenny go Lightly - Indicate in your program when to do the toss to clue guests in. You also might include a note on the tag on the cones, and ask your ushers to mention it while seating people.

KG- I don’t know what your style is, but you can do a lot with a simple wooden pole sunk into a bucket with cement - you can string fabric between them, ribbons, lights, flower garlands, all kinds of things, even drapery. Just decorate the poles and buckets well. You might try a theatrical rental place (for theater sets and props) they might have some unique items you can use - lamposts, signs, etc.

Hishtafel ,

i just switched from Ortho TriNessa to Loestrin, and im liking this one so much better! (i had spotting on the other one)

I have no side effects with it, and it actually has 3 extra days of pills, and only 4 placebo (period) pills. most have 7 placebo pills. Shorter period…love it! :)

Jo,

I’m not sure what your photog budget is but you could check out lisa lefkowitz in sf. She’s been featured in many bridal mags and does beautiful work. I just love how the couples’ personalities and the beauty of the wedding day come through seemingly effortlessly in her photos.

Jo– For SF photographers, I like Edie Fogel (www.mysticrectangle.com), Adi Nevo (www.adinevo.com) and Octavia Hunter. Check out their respective styles, but all three also are fairly reasonable (for San Francisco)…
