My Latest Obsession: Pinkberry

March 14th, 2007 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Beetle

For those of you who have tried it…well, then you know what I’m talking about. For those of you in LA and NY who haven’t, get thee to a pinkberry at once! Pinkberry has written about and pined over endlessly over the past year or so, but for those of you who have missed the buzz, it’s a new frozen yogurt place that was started in LA and has now made its way to NYC. I finally had a chance to try pinkberry recently and after one bite, I was hopelessly addicted. Truth be told, I ordered another small yogurt after finishing my first medium yogurt–it was that good.

For any frozen yogurt fans out there, I must warn you that this is not the typical “fro yo” experience. Most frozen yogurt places I’ve been to seem to attempt to closely mirror the ice cream experience as best they can. Pinkberry is totally different…it actually takes like yogurt. It’s a bit tart and not too sweet. They only have two flavors: plain (which is sort of vanilla-ish) and green tea. I don’t drink green tea and any “green tea” flavored item I’ve tried before has sort of made me gag…BUT, the pinkberry green tea is dreamy. You may also choose from a variety of toppings–they have everything from delicious fresh fruit (which ain’t so easy to find in NY in the dead of winter) to Captain Crunch.

Best, best, best of all, this yogurt barely registers on the calorie scale! It’s only 25 calories an ounce and is totally fat free. For those of you on a pre-wedding diet (or anyone else who just like to keep it real on the healthy tip), this is a fantastic, delicious, healthy treat.

ditto to Mrs. Daisy! i’ve been telling my friends how similar Pinkberry is to Bloomie’s fro-yo!!! they’re very similar!!! both tarte and yogurty! my old co-worker would get Bloomie’s fro-yo everyday for lunch during the summers!

they’re both great…Pinkberry has awesome toppings and Bloomie’s has HUGE portions!

To clarify on the actual caloric value, despite the fact that I love pinkberry, a small is around 5 ounces (with 25 grams of sugar) which makes it around 125 calories without the fruit, but most people don’t order that. They order the medium because it’s the best value. That’s 8 ounces (with 40 grams of sugar) making it 200 calories not including the fruit.

It’s still reasonable for a dessert, but the claim that it’s only 25 calories per ounce is misleading because you each much more than an ounce. It’s the same caloric value as most fat free frozen yogurts.

And that means it takes about 6-7 orders of pinkberry to gain a pound.

I’m a bigger fan of Red Mango, which seems to have a more creamy texture than Pinkberry (which seems icier).

And for JenChen, if you’re near UCLA, they have Red Mango at the California Roll on Westwood and Santa Monica (near the Blue Wave Car Wash). They don’t have as good a selection of fruit as Pinkberry, but I enjoy it anyway.

thanks lanamia! I hate marketing ploys like that - wasn’t there a Seinfeld about that?

I think Pinkberry is so overrated! Definitely prefer Red Mango or LuvYogurt (all iterations of the same thing), but probably because they aren’t non-fat like Pinkberry. =)

i went to pinkberry yesterday w/mr poppy and we liked it but we had to share the small. :) we couldn’t eat more than that, but it was delicious. but the green tea we like the pure matcha, the one that’s bitter and flavourful. but i think it’s great that they have a lighter ones for people who don’t like the traditional green tea flavour. :D

I heard that Tarte is similar to Pinkberry and Red Mango and that there’s one in Las Vegas. Has anyone tried it? How does it compare to the other two?
