About Mrs. Pearl

No Pain, No Gain

March 14th, 2007 @ 4:54 pm by Mrs. Pearl

I just realized yesterday that it’s been about a month since I last updated readers about my diet and exercise journey. Bad Pearl!

I have been continuing on with my diet, though my exercise has been slipping for various reasons (sickness, work, etc). Since my birthday is on March 16, I have decided to make a renewal of my New Year’s resolution to work out three times per week. I need to make time for working out because I feel like I have way more energy when I do…not to mention I feel so great about myself when I go. Endorphins are ab fab. :)

In any event, likely due to my lack of exercise and going solely by diet, I have lost an additional 6 lbs in the last month (bringing my total to 23 lbs). People have asked what I am eating, so here’s a sample from what I ate yesterday. :)

Breakfast:
Vitamin Water, Banana

Snack:
No sugar added applesauce

Lunch:
Healthy Choice frozen entree
Ritz 100 calorie snack pack
Bottle of water

Snack:
Fat free yogurt

Dinner:
Meatloaf (made with 1 lb extra lean ground beef and 1 lb ground turkey with oatmeal instead of breadcrumbs)
SmartOnes broccoli, cheese, and potatoes
Diet Dr. Pepper or Water

When I’m craving more sweets, I eat a sugarfree Jello pudding. I know a glaring deficiency is my lack of vegetables, but I’m working on it! I’m also short on protein some days, so there’s a need to add in some protein at breakfast. But with this time change, I feel too tired in the morning to wake up and make eggs and ham! A couple of my new favorite food items that help you feel like you’re not on a diet (but are healthier than the OG versions):

Fried rice: brown rice sauteed with Pam with Egg Beaters and veggies.

French bread pizza: french bread and tomato sauce with light mozzarella cheese and reduced fat pepperoni and veggies.

Turkey Italian sausage: The spicy kind is better than regular, IMO, and is just as tasty as the original.

Wishbone Spritzers: salad dressing that is only 1 calorie per spray! It tastes delicious over baby greens. My favorite is the Red Wine Cabernet.

Eggbeaters: I weaned myself into eating Eggbeaters by first starting to make scrambled eggs with 2-3 egg whites for every yolk. Eggbeaters are pretty good, especially if you’re eating them with a protein (like ham) and/or with Tabasco sauce, which I love!

Great job Miss Pearl! My only worry is that your breakfast is too low in calories, and it will effect your metabolism for the day and your overall energy. If I could suggest, move your yogurt up to breakfast and eat with banana, and add some carrot/celery sticks or apple/orange for your snack between lunch and dinner. It’s clementine season (I think) and lots of groceries stores are selling them by the box. Get a box and bring it to work, so you can always grab a miniorange for a nice snack. Plus, it’s sweet, so it can satiate your hunger and your sweet tooth.

Great work, and keep it up! I’m sure you look so fantastic already. Just don’t go too crazy and not feed yourself enough. You wouldn’t want to gain the weight back after the honeymoon. :)

Way to keep it up! I must agree with turtle though on the breakfast. Also if you trade the vitamin water for water or even crystal light you avoid 150 calories (i believe V H2O is quite sugary as well). I put grape nuts in my lowfat yogurt (i hate milk).

My problem is nightime eating so i am working on that.

6lbs is very impressive esp with not as much excercise!!! Yea!!!

Good for you! 23 lbs is fantastic! I have been trying as well but have not been very successful thus far. My problem is definitely exercise. I am in school so all I do all day is sit and read and type of the computer. And with it being so cold here still (-27C today!) it has been hard to motivate myself to get out and be active. Anyhow, enough excuses!
One thing that I have found that works well for me is making myself a smoothie in the morning. I use 1 no-fat yogurt cup, 1 banana, a few strawberries and 5 ice cubes. It is delicious, fast and filling. I usually make it after I get out of the shower and then drink it while I put on my make-up.

I know mornings are so bad! I always feel like poo in the morning though…I’ve been a night owl since childhood! I do usually eat a lowfat chocolate chip granola bar in the mornings also. I forgot to mention that!

Good suggestion on the Crystal Light! I hadn’t even thought of it, even though I keep a box of Crystal Light To Go in my desk.

You all are ab fab. Thanks for the feedback!

that’s great, but your breakfast is very skimpy. You are also lacking a lot of whole foods, veggies, nuts (to get your omegas), fish, etc.

For breakfast I have a cup of oatmeal, a slice of toast and a 3 eggwhite omlette, with coffee!

Miss Pearl,
Awesome. Keep it up! I only wish I had your discipline. Thanks for the tips. Oatmeal…what a great idea.

Isabelle, I don’t eat fish at all. However, I do take an Omega-3 vitamin daily…well, I take a whole range of vitamins (Vitamin B-complex, Vitamin E, multivitamin, Vitamin C, iron, and fiber) daily. I know I am short on veggies for sure. I used to be really good about incorporating 2 cups of salad at lunch and dinner, but I’ve been slacking lately.

If I can manage to get myself out of bed, I’ll have scrambled Eggbeaters, ham, and toast for breakfast (maybe as a breakfast sandwich).

I’m also a fan of the South Beach Diet pre-made breakfast burritos. But again, it’s all about getting back into the swing of things after the time change (BOOOOO to waking up when it’s dark again).

Thanks for the feedback, it is super helpful! And thanks for the very kind words to everyone…I really appreciate it. I have to say that having Mr. Pearl being so awesomely supportive and complimentary of my loss has made things so much easier and fun to do. He’s a keeper…I think I should marry him :)

Miss Snow Pea, I have dedication in part thanks to Mr. Pearl, but also because, well…

I ordered the dress too small.

I am forced to lose this weight to wear my dream gown. Of course nothing too drastic because I want to keep losing after the wedding and be a healthy person so I can have healthy (future) pregnancies and all that good stuff. But for sure, the dress is a good immediate motivator!

Right on, Miss Pearl — Way to go! I suffered from the same lack of protein in the morning until I discovered South Beach’s high protein granola bar thingies. I love the peanut butter one!! Just thought I would share since I am totally addicted to them with my coffee!
