A Homer Moment

March 15th, 2007 @ 7:51 pm by Ms Broccoli

The other night my mum and I were looking at the wedding invitation and I had a little ‘oooooops’ moment: We messed up on the reception time! (How is this even possible? Please… don’t ask. I’m still kicking myself about it.)

So, I logged onto the Knot and yelled for Chad, a notoriously genius guy when it comes to all things proper and refined. He told me that the best thing for us to do would be to tell all of our guests ahead of time, since we’re close to them, and also include the information in the programs/directions that will be handed out at the church… as well as ask our officiant to mention it at the end of the ceremony. Quite a lot of work for one very silly (”stupid” is probably a better word, but it’s so harsh!) mistake.

D’OH!

Have you made any “silly” mistakes in the planning process?

Funny but not so funny story. While I was up printing addresses for our invitations, i left the stuffing and sorting up to my fiance. I showed him exactly how to do it, but left one minor detail out. He needed to make sure to use the response envelopes that already had stamps on them. Once I started recieving responses back, i noticed that people had been using thier own stamps. He didn’t notice that he needed to insert the response envelope that already had a stamp. So, we now joke with our friends that we were just to cheap to send the RSVP envelope with a stamp. I think for the most part people don’t notice or care, but certainly didn’t ever mean for that to happen. Oh well…I’m not stressing over it. I still love him :)

That’s too bad, but an easy fix. Could even turn out to be a good laugh moment. I can see with our friends something like– “Hope you all actually show since I can’t even tell you the right time!”

One note though, I’ve read some things Chad has written and chatted with some of the girls he’s been rude to, and I wouldn’t call him a genius. Notorious, yes. Know-it-all, yes. Genius, no.

He’s one of the reasons I search for wedding info here instead of on the Knot. People here are nice and give opinions with constructive, educated statements realizing that one size doesn’t fit all, not all-knowing advice.

I only say because I’d hate for some nice Wedding Bee-er to search for him and get one of his, “you’re concerned and don’t agree with me, then you must be a bridezilla” responses that he’s infamous for.

CK- If you’re doing favors, you could attach unused stamps somehow if you want to play in on the joke. ;)

Not here, but when I flew to see my fiance a few weeks ago, we travelled up and down the east coast a bit and left the dates open so we could be a little more flexible. Well, I booked out flights to Atlanta, and mine back to LA a few days later, at the same time. Except, I really didn’t- I accidentally booked my flight back to LA the same day as our flights to Atlanta. I figured it out a day before I was scheduled to go back, when I tried to do an online check-in and it couldn’t find my reservation. That was my most recent “DOH” moment… and it cost me about $250.

Good advice from Chad.

If it is a HUGE time difference (ie, guests need to plan or NOT plan to do something between wedding and reception) they need to know early on, so maybe send an email. (Young children might take a nap, non-locals might see the sights, people might go back to their homes/hotels to eat or change their clothes, etc.).

If it’s a only a small difference in time from what the invitation misstates, the update can be provided at the wedding, just tuck a nice page/slip in with the program, along the lines of, “The role of Daddy Warbucks will be played by Justin Timberlake this evening.” No one will mind!

The stamps were probably not even noticed. Good lord, people are supposed to get out their own pen, envelope, stationery, address book, and stamps to write you a real RSVP, and look how easy you made it for them. No worries!!!
