Mind The Gap?

March 15th, 2007 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

Today, I decided I needed a little visit…with my wedding ring. Like Miss Strawberry I sometimes can’t quite resist wearing it around, just for a little bit, never outside, never overnight…just to hang out with it for a little!

As I was gazing lovingly at my wedding set, however…I noticed The Gap.

ringsgapkj2.jpgIt truly doesn’t bother me, but, I’ll admit, when the wedding ring first came in I was a bit…surprised…to see that it didn’t fit flush, since this is the “matching” band for this “set.” I had heard of people becoming fixated with finding a wedding ring that fit flush, and tearfully exchanging their engagement rings - that they loved - just so they could have a perfectly matching flush-fitting set.

So I knew the concept existed, but it somehow still didn’t quite strike my radar as something to worry about. Even when I got the ring, my first thought wasn’t “it doesn’t fit flush!!!” it was, “hmm, that isn’t exactly how I pictured it.” After a little time (aka obsessively staring at it from all angles and photographing it in different lighting for, um, a week) I came to realize that, for me at least, it reeeeeally doesn’t matter whether or not it’s flush! I had originally been lusting over split-shank engagement rings back in the pre-engagement phase, so now whenever I think the gap is noticeable, I just tell myself I’m making my OWN split shank! :-)

So the question is, does it matter to you if your rings fit flush? Do you care about your rings matching exactly, or just sort of “going” together? Would you ever change your engagement ring setting just to get a matching band? Would you wear your engagement and wedding rings on different hands because they weren’t flush enough or didn’t match enough to wear together?

And, (of course), a poll!

What is your wedding set like?

i’d like to qualify my vote a little bit. yes, i wear mine on different hands, they dont match and they dont sit flush. but i purposely wanted it that way. i love my e-ring, and i know that i could have gone out of my way to make my wedding band match my e-ring. but in talking with jewelers, they seem to feel that a diamond wedding band would take away from the brilliance of my e-ring. (check my old blogs for pics of my e-ring)

i didnt want to take away from the e-ring, since it is so beautiful, so i wanted a wedding band that i could wear separately. my wedding band is very elaborate and looks lovely by itself. in fact, putting any other diamond next to it would take away from the brilliance. so in essence, both of my rings are meant to be worn separately. its just my preference that the two rings are separate from each other.

had i gotten an e-ring that was a solitaire, it would have been a different story.

I have a solitaire and the band gets wider towards the diamond. My wedding band is straight and won’t sit fully flush to my e-ring but I wanted it that way. As Mrs. Butterfly said, I noticed a diamond wedding band takes away from my e-ring. My wedding band is very thin with diamonds. I like the variation. I really like antique jewelry and I plan on wearing my wedding band with some antique bands that am getting.

I haven’t purchased my wedding band yet, but I found a white gold one (my ring is platinum, with a round solitaire diamond) that I LOVE, so I’m pricing it in platinum with different jewelers. It’s plain platinum with a v-shaped notch in it so the rings snuggle up together and I LOVED IT SO MUCH WHEN I PUT IT ON!!! I was shocked, b/c I’m a blingy kind of girl and thought I would totally go for a diamond-studded wedding band…but the plain platinum band makes my solitaire stand out even more. Loves it!

That is what I was going to say! I like the gap, I think it makes it look better. I also like The idea of separate bands and E ring. For some reason the horizontal asymmetry of E ring and bands almost never looks right to me.

I don’t have a wedding band and haven’t even looked at any yet. But I know that I will be wearing them on different hands. I love my e-ring, but the band is so wide - I just can’t imagine stacking another ring below it. I would feel like my ring finger was all metal between the base and knuckle of my finger!

i love how your e-ring and band look! - like you said, it’s your own split-shank!! it looks beautifully elegant~

- and i confess, that’s a big (& totally genuine) statement from me…b/c yes, i am totally obsessed w/ my e-ring sitting flush with my future wedding band. i have a round solitaire and want a nice channel set wedding band that will sit flush w/ her. wish me luck! ;)

I agree with everyone. I really like the way your rings look in the picture, at least at that angle. Like JW mentioned, probably because the bands are thin. Looks like 1 engagement ring with a REALLY cool band. Me likes it. =)

i actually PREFER a gap. i think rings that fit flush look somewhat dated for some reason.

i with with a small gap the rings look more delicate and feminine.

To be honest, when I first glanced at your photo, I thought it was a split-shank ring! My wedding band sits almost flush, but it won’t bother me if it’s a little off. It hasn’t been sized yet, so that might make a difference too.

I actually prefer a gap too. Even though my rings were a matching set, they don’t sit flush because of the e-ring design and I love it! It makes it feel like two special rings instead of just one!

My rings actually intertwine. I have never liked the look of another ring sitting next to the engagement ring so if we hadn’t found this one I wouldn’t have had a wedding ring.

I agree with the others. I like the gap between your rings! It looks very striking compared to how most ppl’s rings are. Your rings are gorgeous!

I chose to move my e-ring (solitaire) to my right hand, and got a georgeous w-ring instead. The thought of having it separate intrigued me, and I did some research before purchasing. A classic filligree look with pave diamonds (but very thick band) was what I ended up with, and I love it! I can’t wait to wear it, but I am very superstitious, and it hasn’t been on my finger since being sized and purchased!

Miss Bluebell, I absolutely LOVE your e-ring and band! Do you mind me asking where you found a band less than 2mm? Also, do you know how many mm it is? Your gap does not bother me one bit. Very feminine and beautiful!
Thanks!

I’d love to know what you are planning on doing because my ring is exactly the same but the center stone is a radiant cut. I’ve been going around in circles trying to figure out what to do for a wedding band.
Thanks!
