Dig Your Own Diamond!

March 16th, 2007 @ 4:16 pm by Mrs. Snow Pea

Mr. Snow Pea was watching an episode on the travel channel called America’s Best Places to find Cash and Treasures, that featured a park where the public can pay an admission fee of $5 and literally dig until they find something valuable. Mr. Snow Pea was envious of the diggers thinking how much money he could have saved if he dug me a diamond for my engagement ring instead of buying one in the store.

Gem Marks the Fourth Largest Diamond Find at Arkansas’s Diamond Site For the Year 2006

You can do it here at the Arkansas Crater of Diamond State Park. We’re thinking of taking a road trip sometime next year and maybe try this! Maybe he can dig me an anniversary present!

i always get so excited (& slightly jealous) when i read those articles about ppl. finding these HUGE gems by going to one of those parks. i’d LOVE to go!! even just for the experience~ and finding a rock would be a bonus~ haha :)

I’m originally from Arkansas and I can tell you that it’s not worth the trip. I went as a kid….it’s basically a huge dirt field and you…dig. It’s like playing in the dirt. Which is entertaining for a little while but is not the stuff of a great vacation. There are so many other wonderful places to see in Arkansas, I wouldn’t make this any more then a 30 minute stop on the way to somewhere else.

What are some things you would recommend? :)

Arkansas is mostly known for nature (it’s “the Natural State) so if you enjoy any type of hikining, camping, rafting, etc. it’s wonderful for that. I would recommend the Ozark Mnts.

Hot Springs, Ar. is another good place…people use to come from around the world to bathe in the thermal hot springs but now Hot Springs is a cute boutique town with shopping and a ton of spas. http://www.hotsprings.org/
I similar but smaller town in the Ozarks is Eureka Springs

And if any brides out there are in the Arkansas area they shoul visit Lows Bridal - http://www.lowsbridal.com/. It has the 3rd largest inventory of bridal dresses in the U.S. and has the largest inventory in the South. It’s a good place to try on a ton of different designers and styles to get an idea of what you want.

I live in NW Arkansas too. Yeah, the diamond crater thing is way too much hype. People find stuff there occasionally but it’s not like there’s just diamonds in the ground for easy digging..

The Buffalo River is a good place to go, very pretty, with swimming and cabins you can rent. (Nice cabins, not like pioneer cabins, lol)
